Telehandler bucket, New wear edge and crack repairs

- In this video I weld on a new wear edge and repair cracks on a telehandler bucket.
I start by cutting the old wear edge off, this is done by cutting down the back of the weld with the plasma cutter, plasma gouging the end welds off and also the welds on the underside.
The straps on the underside of the bucket floor had worn through so I decided to cut them off and replace them as well.
Due to the bucket having a hard life, the floor was quite bent. I used a porta pack hydraulic ram to push the floor back out so the edge and straps could be tacked back on without having too much of a bow in them. The pry bar was also needed to help tweak the floor back to the straps.
Once they were tacked on, I cnc plasma cut some strips out and then pressed them to shape with the press brake, these were tacked over the bottle corner where the floor had cracked/worn thin.
The edge and straps were stitch welded on as they were originally and the extra plates where fully welded on.
That was the bottom side complete so the bucket was turned back the right way up.
More cracks on the inside of the bucket needed attention. I gouged them out the best I could and rewelded them. I cut out another 2 sets of plates, the base plate to cover the bad area and then a cover plate to help add strength back in. The first set of cracks were also rewelded from the top so the weld would penetrate through to the plates underneath.
Because of all the weld, it had pulled the floor up and coursed the edge to bow up. To solve this, I put the hydraulic ram back in, put some force on the opposite way and then continued to weld the rest of the edge on. Once cooled the pressure was realized the edge was nice and straight.
Last job was to spray a bit of red oxide over the new bits.
Hope you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching!
Sunday night in Queensland Australia. Beats the junk on TV by a mile!
You mean you won't be watching Queerstralia on the ABC ? "Zoe Coombs Marr investigates how the Queer community has found strength in diversity and how hard life can be when you are criminalised and pathologised just for being your authentic self." No wonder Ollie's videos are so popular !
By a country mile..!
West Australia here
I taped Married at first sight, I'll watch it later.
Snowball is in Great Britain.
It's incredible how you can turn a completely worn-out bucket into a 'new' one again, well done!
cheers ben.
I felt your frustration when the wire feed for your mig jammed - there's few things more annoying, and for me it generally happens when I've crawled into a confined space and left the pliers on the bench! Nice repair as usual Oliver, I very much enjoy the way you present your videos, keep 'em coming!
Never seen the prybar welding technique thing before. Ever. Enjoy watching your work very much. Thanks for posting.
Always love the work you do and the quality. You don’t just repair, but improve the product at the end. Thanks for bringing us along.
True, that bucket is actually stronger now than new.
It’s just to bad that the manufacturer doesn’t make things that will last. Get it out of the door, let the customer fix it
2000 views in the first hour! 😅 You're becoming very popular Sunday viewing Olly! 👌👏👏👏
It's a good time slot for sure.
You’ve certainly given that bucket a new lease of life. Great job
Your repaired bucket looks stronger than a new one. I like the shapely repair plates👍
Sunday morning and coffee in New Jersey USA. 3:30am here. Way to improve your process to become more efficient! You're doing the thing.
New Haven here...
Good to see Oliver saving time and making money
Great one ! The power back is a game changer - think I need one here at the farm. Thought your method of tacking the foot of the crowbar to the bucket skin was very clever - great leverage. Looking forward to more from you !
It always amazes me the amount of times I've seen buckets worn through on that back edge and still the manufacturers have them like that. Our local blacksmith used to put a thick heavy bar (quite often the edge removed from the front) across the back edge as a wear plate. We've all used the back edge of the bucket for leveling a heap of sand or soil.
When I make a bucket from scratch I weld a square of bucket edge on the 2 back corners.
Always a trade off against weight and cost. To be fair that back edge ware is down to a bad operator. I used to work in a factory and we had loads of thin heals on forklift tines again down to operators running about with then rubbing on the floor.
It’s all about the $$$
Yeah but manufacturers don't want the bucket to last forever as they want you to buy a new one in the future.
IT'S the way I did our Bobcat bucket years ago, Put it at a snowplow cutting edge at 30 degree angle and called it a "BACKDRAGGON" = Should have patented and trademarked it. Well too late to worry now,
Another Sunday morning…porridge..tea &another dose of Snowball Engineering
He is consistent and videos are nice and long! This guy and C+C surplus do it the best as far as youtubing and their profession.
Always enjoyable to watch great content as always.
Glad you enjoy it!
another great video. between you and CEE videos makes my weekend
Me too , another one is ICweld
Great work Ollie and got to say your editing and commentary are so professional now ! It was always good , HOLLYWOOD here we come 😅😮😊
Thanks! I don’t know about that 🤣
good morning 3 am in New York time to watch another video
Another very entertaining and informative video Oliver. I especially focused on how you would tack your pry bar to the bucket and use it a temporary lever! Brilliant. Pro tips like that are real jewels! Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
morning all, coffee on the go. Greeting from the Netherlands
Nice job, I always enjoy watching you working away and solving the problems that come with working on old used machinery, great job
Meant to say and making it like new again 😅
If you go to age concern shops or any charity shops you can pick up jackets very cheap .Bin them as quickly as they wear out and it will still be a cheap way of keeping warm .Another great video by the way.
Good idea!
In older jackets are better made & will last longer than a new one
My and man always liked the charity shop gear, but i once saw him set fire to a pair of nylon trousers he had given when we was gas axing a old truck up 😂😂..
Another bucket saved from the scrap pile ! the repair plates add some strength to make it last a few more years. The power pack looks to be a handy addition to your shop. Thanks for sharing your work week. Brian from South Yorkshire.
Oliver that repair will outlive the bucket well done🇬🇧🏴🚜🪄 regards from Scotland
Ollie... Love how you explain the steps you are taking to fix the needed repairs... From hydraulics to a tacked wrecking bar...
Great job making the bucket better than new.Looks like aGood candidate for your custom brackets.Be Safe.
Those plates at the base of the ribs that you hated doing ended up looking pretty nice, almost like a pro did it. 🤪
Almost 🤣
He is a pro, he gets paid for his skills and expertise, deservedly so.
@@tomtd I suggest you have your sarcasm detector recalibrated, Tom. Cheers!
Porządna robota wykonana w rozmyśle i spokoju . Super !😀
Always great to watch every Sunday morning. Another great one 👍🏻
Straight forward you may say, but with some intresting solutions here and there! Thank you mr Snowball!
I am always impressed by your videos. You do amazing work
Lovely warm day here in Melbourne Australia, looks a bit nippy where you are Oliver! Cheers.
Better than new - always something to learn from your videos Oliver
informative and educational! agricultural repair at its best. excellent!
Great job thanks from old New Orleans 😎
Great job on the bucket, those hydraulic power packs come in handy for lots of jobs, after a while you will wonder how you managed without one. You can improve the downdraught on the table by covering up the unused open space with some thin plate you might have lying around or anything really that's not inflammable to sparks even thin plywood, by using smaller pieces your work area becomes adjustable and that way the fan you have will only be sucking from the open cutting area.
Yes, that would help. When I’m cutting a full sheet nearly all of the smoke gets sucked out. The down draft table is sectioned so it only sucks out the area it’s cutting which helps
Yup. The "before and after" using them is like night and day. And i was reticent in getting one the first time, because i was using a variety of screw jacks and splitters (the oldie wood splitter wedge with a screw in the center). Hydraulic is so much better.
Very enjoyable episode I like the hr long ones I think they area good timeframe love your work , you can see you take pride in what you do, it’s the only way. Thank you for taking the time to show us, it’s appreciated regards Andy Perth Australia
Your videos are welcome & very informative considering how you improvise with what you’ve got at hand, just keep it up
Great work.
Hi Ben just came across your channel and I have to say you do amazing work, and some of the little tricks and tips you show are brilliant especially the nail bar one amazing trick,,great work mate and thank you 1💯💙🇮🇪
Love watching you work m8, you do a fantastic job every time, thx for your video.
That new plasma table is really coming in handy
I use it for nearly every job
Another great Sunday morning video great job Olly
Another excellent video
Great job Oliver, the customer will continue with this bucket for years.
Thanks for posting this video Oliver. Always a good Sunday when you got a new video coming out.
Can't tell you how refreshing it is to have a welding video where a guy uses a plaz instead of a death wheel but I think my first choice for gauging would have been carbon arc.
All and all, though it was industry job rated.
Good enough for agriculture. More than good enough for me!👏
The bucket looks good. The coat too. Not a fashion show. The welding and filming are super. Thanks
That bucket sure was a mess when it came in. But you did a great job of fixing it, so the owner should get a lot more use out of it before it comes back later to have the floor replaced.
"Good enough for agriculture". Love it. Words to live by.
Nice work. As for a work coat, I wore a sweat shirt under a hooded sweat shirt with the ubiquitous standard green welding jacket over them. Good down to about 15°F after that I would add long underwear to the mix. Worked outside down to -10°F with that. The welding jacket needs to be one or two sizes larger then you would normally wear.
Top job Ollie 👍 A lot of work
Involved, to restore back to a working bucket . I’m afraid , operators abuse . 🤦♂️
Another great video Oliver and once again your work ethics and constant concern for your customers goes the extra mile. As for your coat I see nothing wrong with it, made a bit tattered on the fluorescent stripe but if if does what it needs to such as keep you warm and protected then where it with pride it's worked hard as you.
Sitting in my workshop rural Victoria Australia, 38 degrees, gusty hot northerlies, thunder storms, dust and shit blowing every where and thinking it is a bit ordinary. I watch you at work with snow outside, heavy jacket, thick hat, fog breath and cold steel and I think, I've got it easy. My hat is off to you. Cheers D
Porto power is a great bit of kit, maybe consider adding a pull ram
Excellent problem solving and a great result!
well done doing all the extra stuff that needed to be done . hope they appreciate your work
Awesome, thank you for sharing, I learn a lot again 👍👍👍👍
Another amazing job Oliver considering what you had to work with.
Yet another fantastic job👌 keep up the great work👍
Nice simple run of the mill jobs to pay the bills are hard to beat. Take care n stay safe.
Great job!!
Love watching a bit of anti-welding! You and Alistairc123 keep up the British side. 😊
Hello Oliver from the USA....I thought is was a good repair with what you had to work with. Enjoyed as always. Looks like winter at your place too.
Another nice upgrade and fix for the user. Well done!
Great work!
Nice fix of that old bucket!!!
Really enjoyed this video, and the milling of the boring tool was a good counter segment.
Sunday morning coffee with snowball engineering nothing like it lots of laughts
Very nice and nessary repair caught just in time , this bucket was close to failing
Nice one ! Good bit of strengthening and repair !
Good episode 👍👍👍
Nice job looks great 👍
Another superbe job completed by Snowball Engineering. I like the way you always improve over the original design so that the equipment will last longer before next failure rather than replacing like for like.
Brilliant job awesome video, Olly
The hi vis bomber jacket came out nicely. You can't beat having a good porta power kit. I've had my Sealey one for 20 years
You've got the dog etc etc. The only thing missing is a long plasma torch like IC Weld
I don’t have a dog
@@snowballengineering get a dog also!
A magnificent job.
You made a great job of that bucket thanks.
Looks like its being used with a brush attachment , would explain why the bottom is worn away . Top work as always Oliver
Has anybody noticed how bright and clean the viz jacket is😂😂😂
Methodical and thorough, nice one! Whenever we heard the splatter of Mig on rust the cries of f*cking old bird sh*t would ring out across the workshop and all would come to look at your finished weld! Good old days! Keep at it Oly, enjoying these!
Great job Oliver, that looks better than factory
LOL............. Good enough for agriculture? 😀😃You are a master of understatement. If anything that repair is too good for agriculture. Not only did you fix the problem you improved the design.
Looking good, my friend! That bucket is ready is to get back to doing business!
Great job
Really enjoy your posts😊
Ottimo lavoro professionale, complimenti!
I have to say Oliver, that my favourite tool in the workshop is the plasma cutter - even if it is a cheap Chinese one!
Hell of a lot better than new Oliver nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
Grand job that young man!
Nice repair, I suspect half of the reason the buckets crack there is having 5 ton of telehandler pushing a bucket along a floor into a dead stop raised kerb or edge. But you are right in that it isn't the best design.
FANTASTIC enjoyable video
Way to go on this build! 👌👍! Thanks for sharing! Keep them coming!
Wow! What a job. Almost a complete rebuild of the structural parts.
Great work. Thanks for sharing!
Good job as usual Oliver.
Well done
Great work👍
Nice work 👍
My 22 year old Carhart jacket is still wearing just great. The make good stuff. Or they did 20 plus years ago, lol. I have that same porta power. I have had it for close to 30 years now. It ha served me well. I think you will love that thing. I have straightened car and truck frames, levels ceiling and floor beams and much more with the thing. It owes me nothing at this point. My boy will get plenty of use out of it after I am gone! lol
great stuff as usual, do get your gas bottles, especially the oxygen, tied to something. 50 years ago I saw the devistation they can cause when they fall and break the valve stem.
Yes. I need to, I’ve seen the videos.
Highlight of Sunday morning
