    Best review yet. Loved the comedy at the beginning. Review portion was interesting and just the right length. “Life-Stories” segment at the end is a new twist on audio reviews, but I laughed along with you. I’d keep those stories to a couple of minutes thought.

    The review style you adopted for this video is perfect. Not too much info, not too less, story was ok, audio related. I think you really hit it on the money with this video.

    Pretty good review. Agree with everything you said. I put the Alcanteras ( Shure 1540) pads and it tamed the highs.

    I recently picked up a used pair of these with Shure 1540 pads, the Mayflower cushioned headstrap, and the Mayflower Mod Kit. Very good headphones.

    I believe what makes some headphones to have a good ability to project sound forward is simply the position and angle of the driver relative to your ears. Then again, I might be wrong.

    I put the Alcantara pads and they were fine. Sounded like the original pads but much more comfortable. And his right about using a amp.

    I found stock T50RP to be quite bright, to the point of being painful at times and couldn't deal with thim in stock form. New thicker pads alone helped a lot there. I prefer the HM5 flat sheepskin pads as my #1 pad of choice (or Dekoni Sheepskin pads #2 due to a smaller opening). Adding cotton to the cups where also good to tame and smooth out the treble. The only other mod I did that I liked was closing some of the vests behind the ear pads to increase bass & sub bass, I just used duct tape for this.
    I tried they Mayflower mod but didn't like the felt take over the drivers, it just killed the bass. So I recommended mainly the cotton, new pads and duct tape (the clay in the cups is fine but didt seem to make as big a difference to me than the other three mods, I have one with and one without.

      @squidwardstesticles5914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ik this is old af, but the felt on the driver killed the bass because you put it on wrong. I did the mayflower mod and I learned (I think from a comment from some random guy on mayflower’s instructional video) that you have to get the holes positioned JUST right or else it kills 100% of the bass. It took me a few tries to get it right

    Ironically, I didn’t like the sound as much with the only other pads other than stock I tried them with - the Shure SRH1540 alcantara pads, which made them loads more comfortable but sucked out the mids.
    I prefer the sound with stock pads.

      I agree. I've tried a couple of pads and the stock ones with EQ provide the best result IMO.

    Hi josh, quick question, I just picked up a pair of used t50rp mk3 off ebay.
    I find when holding and rotating the ear cups in my hands that they make a plastic creaking noise. I watched a few youtube vids and I think I hear the same noise in your video when your handling the headphone ear cups, just want to know if that is normal. thanks.

    That left channel rattle seems to be a common issue with fostex planars. I had it on my t20s, t50s, and t60s. All in the left channel. i've managed to fix it on all of them by tightening the screws that hold the driver together (have to open it up, screws on the inside of the cup, 8 screws in total that surround the square driver) and pressing down/flattening the white felt thing on back of the driver. I dont' know which of those two things actually fixed it but i havent been able to find any frequencies that buzz anymore.

    I highly, highly recommend picking up an IDSD Micro Black Label. Yes, it's pretty expensive, but dude is it ever so worth it. Plenty of power to spare to drive the T50RP and very musical.

    Hey Joshua,
    Thanks for the review.
    I was hoping this would be my ideal headphone but your comment about forward projection in games worries me. I play a lot of FPS games and listen to classical music.
    if i may kindly ask you to recommend a headphone under these specific parameters:
    1) closed back/semi open but good and good isolation (i want to run my headphones lower volume as i feel the years of headphone/earphone gaming and loud musical events have slightly damaged my hearing and i don't want to exacerbate the problem if i can help it
    2) great for classical
    3) great posititional imaging, certainly depth and a decent sound stage
    4) bass response isnt a priority
    5) must be european, american or japanese made
    6) value less than $500 ideally, but am willing to hear you out (the lower the better but really if theyre good theyre worth it
    7) detatchable cable would be ideal but not 100% critical, i just dont enjoy the fragility of headphones without this interface - every single pair of headphones ive ever owned (approximately 6 or 7) have had loss off sound in one ear.
    thank you so much!

    got the 20's and can't stand the bass; fixed it by removing the foam thingys; can appreciate the highs and mids now, sound stage is not affected by the change, not very wide to begin with but satisfying.
    update: my T20's aren't my favorite, i can appreciate them doing movies but not music, too loud the bass. note that i say "too loud", not uncontrolled. these phones seem to do 20hz solidly (I don't have how to measure that). yesterday i blocked the holes in the cups with tape, the bass disappeared and the highs went to painful level. the foam covers deteriorated and are trashed. ok, i went to the bathroom and brought back some "facial quality" and managed to tame the highs while at the same time bass started to come back. it hadn't really disappeared, i kidded, it just lost weight. btw, with the holes in the cups now blocked, the only way i can hear something is with gain on high in my portable amps and between 12 and 3 in my magni 3. i'm thinking of going into the cups again and take off a little of the tape, maybe a third, to see if bass increases and the highs get softer.

    Not all air pads sound good with these headphones. I bought Deconi platinum specials for t50rp and they started sounding like shit.
    Stock sounds best but not very comfortable, still looking for a solution. By the way, in stock, these headphones not only sound the best in their price category but are also quite competitive up to $ 500. I compared them to Hifiman Ananda ($ 700) and I won't say that there is a big difference in sound quality.

    Hmm... I've been considering these headphones for a while now. I'm just looking for an "allrounder", something mostly flat but also a good range, for not a stupid amount of money. - I also prefer to have a semi-open pair, so that it dips into both open and closed types, of which there aren't that many headphones. - The AKG K240 is one of them and it MIGHT sound better than the T50RP, though it probably also has way more bass as far as I can tell by people's impressions. - The price is also like half, and considering the T50RP's shortcomings it shouldn't have the pricetag it has. Especially if you have to modify it to supposedly improve it. - It's weird pair of headphones; People seem to like it but also not... I'd buy it if it was 25-50 Euros (or even USD) less. But I've been chafing my ass on the fence about these for months. But I like the way you put it that it becomes worth its price IF you add good pads and a cable. - I'll just go with the K240 for entertainment for now and perhaps consider the T50RP for production-stuff later. It's a hassle having to use multiple sets though...

      Sorry but there is absolutely no way that k240 can be better than t50rp. I used to have it and it literally does not have any bass, no treble extension and has wonky mid. Pure sonic performance wise, it is a terrible headphone. Try out other headphones like k702, Hifiman he400, or even koss. Trust me they will make you hate the k240

    Brainwavz gave me worst results. I switched back to the shure1540 pads.
    I use the Toppink nx1 for mobile and the Rupert Neve RNHP for home use. I bought the Rupert for the T50rp and for future inefficient headphones. I set the volume on the Rupert at around 80 percent.

    The question still stands.. Is this better than the DT 770 pro? Seems like nothing beats the 770pros? Unless you pay ten times more

    • @Grom84
      @Grom84 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i don't know, this headphones out of the box have rolled off bass so in comparison to dt770 you'll find them thin and plain and nothing special. even my superlux hd330 has more bass, or hifiman 400se, or shp9600 which aren't bass heavy headphones and they cost lower or the same, so t50rp mkIII will be a disappointment for you. of course if you'll listen them for a few weeks you will adopt to them, they will be okay, but then when you swap them with something else you realize that they are - just meeeh.

    Just to be clear, you are reviewing the T50RP MKIII. Cause the original MKII do not come with Orange Cable, and they sound nothing like the MKIII. And with your date story, Many Ravers are Bi-Polar. I used to DJ in a RAVE and you could be having a great conversation or interaction with them while you are DJing, once your set is finished, their personality turn 180 degree. Its like they dont even know you. I am questioning myself if that was the same dude/girl that I spoke with. (I guess the Drug worn off). And yes, you have improve tremendously with your reviewing. Keep up the great work!

    1 foot - 15 feet wide soundstage? What? I've never managed to experience these wide soundstages in headphones at all, it all sounds pretty "closed" to me, 1 foot away at MOST. I guess I don't have magical ears :( Even the HD800, it was wider than majority, yes, but still sounded like a headphone in terms of stage, which makes complete sense to me because, well, they are headphones, not speakers. The T50RP had nowhere near as wide stage even with Brainwavz pads to me.
    Good video anyway, keep it up man.

    • @JoshuaValour
      @JoshuaValour  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was more of a explanation of what the soundstage “felt like” rather than a legitimate measurement. Does that make sense? I may not be explaining correctly.

    • @fuffy442
      @fuffy442 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soundstage in most recordings of pop/rock/etc is completely artificial because the studio they're made in is a small acoustically dampened room. It's all added by electronic wizardry, and no surprise if it doesn't sound natural. However, classical recordings are made in concert halls and have the natural acoustics of those halls. If you are lucky enough to know what these halls sound like in person (as I am), then you can legitimately judge the accuracy of soundstage in recordings made in those halls. It's even better in live recordings when you get the opportunity to place audience noises behind you accurately. Fun stuff.
