Greta Van Fleet Highway Tune REACTION and LONG RANT about the Comparison to Led Zeppelin
This song is several years back. They’ve grown allot in those years. I’m a HUGE Zeppelin fan…my favorite band….and the first time I heard this song in my car, I practically had an accident. I was just excited that SOMEONE out there was doing this kind of music again! Hopefully, rock will again be mainstream instead of a niche genre. Some old farts like me are like, how DARE anybody try to sound like Zeppelin. Why the hell not? We WANT that sound to come back! So be glad that Van Fleet is out there!

They wrote this when they were in their mid-teens. It was recorded when they were each around 20. Their newer stuff shows growth and a willingness to venture off in other directions to explore their blues foundations. Hell of a start for them, though. And I started following them because when I heard this song I at first thought it was something Zep did but never before released.

Zeppelin was an influential group for them. Zeppelin took parts from others as well. So has other groups.
The operative word being 'like', not an almost exact copy. Greta Van Fleet didn't add anything interesting in terms of musical style or lyrics compared to the classic bands - they just sounded like they were trying to imitate them. Frankly, I think that's actually not respectful to the past but lacks respect. It's like when parents do their best to raise their child to be their own person, but instead, the child just copies them to gain approval.
Music should be an evolution - it should build upon the foundations that existed, not restructure or imitate what was already there.

Twice I saw them live. They even plug their instruments into the amps with cords! Who uses cords these days? I feel that rock and roll is in good hands with these guys!!
When I saw Van Halen when they reunited with Dave, I was shocked to see Eddie plugged in with a cord. I wondered if he felt there was lag in the wireless or something.

If I remember correctly, this is the first song they wrote, in their mid-teens. Yes, they sounded Zeppelin-ish. But when you go through their catalog, you see growth and progress. Highway Tune is like night and day compared to the new album. They've made huge leaps, especially Josh's voice.
It's been wonderful watching them blossom and find themselves as musicians. I can't wait to see what they do in the future.
Geebz, awesome to see you do a Greta breakdown! Their early tunes really do play into the Zeppelin comparison. Their newer work however, puts Josh's vocals into the spotlight. Completely different band in 2021.
Nope, same ripoff bullshit. The intro to Heat Above is a direct lift from You're Time is Gonna Come. The guitarist dresses and moves like Page, the sing attempts to sing and moves like Plant. He even does the twisty hand thing. It's lame.

@@atlantic_love I've been listening to Zeppelin since the 70s. Been playing their music on several instruments since the 80s. I'm familiar enough with their catalog to hear (and see) obvious ripoffs. It's not a big secret. GVF is a bad ripoff of Led Zeppelin.
@@atlantic_love They try (very hard) to sound like Zep. I hear or see nothing of Aerosmith anywhere. Why does this make you so mad? Take it up with them. They aren't just wearing bellbottom jeans and big collars, the guitarist wears costumes like the ones Page wears in TSRTS, and moves like him. The drummer plays a Bonham kit. Frodo moves just like Plant on stage with the little twirly hand gestures. And the keys/bass kid basically plays the intro to You're Time Is Gonna Come as the intro to the song in this video. The whole thing is gross. You must be young, you guys will fall for anything.
To your point, “Heat Above” doesn’t sound like Led Zeppelin, IMO. Vocals are off the charts. Dude can sing his ass off. Refreshing.

They wrote this song when they were between the ages of 12 and 15, now they are between 22 and 25, they've grown so much. I would recommend something from the newest album, like heat above or broken bells
Absolutely. This is probably the worst song he could have listened to. Broken Bells is amazing. Black Smoke Rising is probably my favorite of theirs though.

They are who they are. Lots of people sound like somebody else, but the are making their own way. Their raw talent is much appreciated.
Everything you said about how it sounded like it was recorded was exactly what they’re were going for, you were spot on. They are growing and evolving, though, so their newest album is quite a bit different, but also fantastic, almost theatrical. I recommend it very highly. Oh, and by the way, I’m 61…😁
What I've been thinking lately is that when The Weeknd came out, they compared Abel to Michael Jackson and no one got upset by it. Comparing this band and lead singer to Led Zeppelin should be a compliment! Let'em release more albums 'cause I'm loving new songs with this style!!

These Kids were like 18 and younger here. The guitarist and singer are identical twins...the bassist/keyboardist is their 2 years younger brother and all 3 look exactly alike! The drummer was their friend. Very talented brothers!

Seems the older rock fans love these guy because they miss the old style production like you said. There are a couple more bands reviving this music approach like Rival Sons and Dirty Honey
I hope you do more GVF. Live, they jam on and on like 70’s bands used to. They like the era, and are more diverse down the road.

"The Barbarians" was good too. That was the first one I heard. They aren't like Zeppelin, imo. I mean they sound similar to a lot of bands. Just happy to have this style of music NOW. :)

I’ve seen them live in Michigan when they were kids. It was jaw dropping. They were born to play raw, hard rock. We just don’t get to hear this kind of rock anymore. Hell even Robert Plant thinks their great.

The Black Keys and Rival Sons have been doing this sound for a while now. They both have been embraced by Detroit radio.

I wouldn’t categorize Black Keys as 2010’s. The stuff that came out that decade was way less bluesy than their earlier stuff. But yeah, it’d be a cool topic for reaction.

This was their first track released to the mainstream. The rest of their catalog is much more in depth. You really should listen to more songs off this EP, and their latest album shows there growth in so many ways. Check out live versions of their music. A great one to check out is their concert at Red Rocks, there are 4 videos that capture this entire concert. And anything off the new album is great.
Edge of Darkness is their best song IMO. Killer tune. Would be cool to hear your reaction, breakdown of it.

Great take on the track Geebz. I'm never offended when a really young band wears their influences a bit too heavy on their sleeve for the first album, as long as I like the influences. Here's hoping their evolution bring good things.

I'm a huge SW fan but I disagree with him. I think he is being a wee bit old man about it....as he admits in the interviews in question...the fact they upset him I think is an indication they are doing something right...as all new generations should be....also I just love GVF albums. They write excellent songs and are genuinely just doing what they want....with the caveat that they are maybe a tad overproduced on their albums....but again that's maybe the old man in me being a tiny bit cynical...but I refuse to become that old man. If the music hits the spot with, I don't care what others think.....

This song does indeed feel like a Zeppelin cover, but damn, that is one killer groove. I was shocked at first at how similar it sounded, but I'm sure there are plenty of bands that I listen to that sound very similar to others. All that matters to me is great songwriting.
You can't stop yourself comparing them to Zeppelin. It's like listening to The Sword and not picking out major Black Sabbath vibes.
