Hi, I am traveling to Tokyo next week and I am thinking of taking two vintage watches that I have to sell there. One is a Seiko GS Hi-beat 6145-8000 in 18K yellow gold (prestine condition with original strap and buckle) and another is a Eska Chronograph with full calendar and Valjoux 72C (stainless steel average condition for its age - all original). Do you have any stores or recommendaitons for me to sell those vintage watches? Thanks.
Hey thanks for making this video Austin! It's a godsend for someone like me intending to go shopping in Tokyo soon with very limited time. Question... do these shops require appointments or can one just walk in? I've heard that watch shops in Japan require appointments otherwise they will turn you away. 😯
Thanks - glad to hear it's useful! I've never heard that, about appointments - maybe that was during COVID. Anyway, you don't need an appointment for any of these shops.
Hi Austin! I’ll be in Tokyo on June 30-July 1st. Im interested in getting a Rolex GMT 2. After watching your video It got me interested in getting the 116710 LN. can I get a decent one in 8-9,000 price range? Thanks
I just visited Nakano Broadway last week during my 2 week trip to Japan (my very first). I became aware of Nakano Broadway through your channel and consider myself thoroughly “influenced.” 😅 Case in point: I picked up a 16710 Coke with the “stick dial” from Quark. I really liked the staff there, true watch nerds, and really fun to talk with. In your video you mention them being pricey and that may be true but as far as I can tell i got an outstanding deal. Thanks for making such great videos and helping other addicts… err hobbyists, like myself 😂
Thank you for the donation, and congratulations on your 16710 Coke! The fact that it's a stick dial is cool bonus - I love when a watch has a unique element to it that sets itself apart from the standard ones. It must be a D or Z serial (but I bet a D)!
Indeed a D serial. I’m not positive but I think it’s the 3185 movement and not the 3186 from the Explorer II (my understanding is there was some overlap at the end of the 16710 run). The papers show Oct 2007 as when the warranty started but I’m not sure when the watch was actually produced etc; it be interesting to have a watchmaker open the case back
The 3186 movement was in the later Z serials and M serials. But to check you could always do the "wiggle test": jump the local hour hand, and if the 24-hour hand wiggles, it's the 3185 movement. And if the 24-hour hand doesn't wiggle, it's the 3186 movement.
Great video, as always, and good timing for me 😄. I'll be visiting Japan in the next 2 weeks and will be spending a few days in Shinjuku, Tokyo and then in Naniwa Ward, Osaka. I'll try to visit these stores while I'm there. Many thanks, from Canada!
I have been to Nakano about seven times in the last three years. In my experience, watches at Nakano are often overpriced compared to online prices in Japan. Negotiating is nearly impossible, as they rarely go below the sticker price. I have yet to find a watch there that isn't available online for a lower price. Nakano is quite hyped these days, and most salespeople have little to no English-speaking skills, making communication difficult. It has become a gimmicky, far-away location to buy a watch. These days, I find similar pricing in Ginza for most watches that "regular folks" (non WIS) look for.
I’m planning my first trip to Japan In January 2024, which shops in Tokyo would you advise to search for a good cost/benefit ratio Tudor 79090 or a Rolex 16610 ? Everything there will be new and quite overwhelming to me. Thanks in advance !
Hello Austin , thank you so much for sharing all this information with us. I would love to spend time there and look at all these amazing watches. 😊😊😊😊
Great question, and I too would love to know what happened! They did indeed used to be full of both new and preceramic Rolex - I remember seeing something like 20 BLNR's there...but now only one single Day-Date. I wonder if they lost their connection to a corrupt AD?
Did you see the 16760 Sophia Loren / Fat Lady at Kamekichi? Unpolished A case and sapphire with original Coke patina bezel, orig hands, and orig tritium dial? Bracelet had some sag and small dents. $9166... I must have just missed you!
Hi Austin, all booked for Tokyo and Osaka in September, which city has the best deals? Looking for a vacheron constantin overseas second generation and a submariner 14060m.Cheers.Rick.
The special edition " beach" Daytonas were introduced to celebrate the first 6-digit P-serial Daytonas in 2000. Advertised to women, they were a complete dog. Today: wowzers.
I always thought tourists did pay the 10% tax but it gets refunded at the airport. Otherwise all foreign Japan residents could get away with it by showing their passports.
The way it works here, is that you show your passport to the shop, they take down the information, and you get the tax discount on the spot. You have to have a tourist stamp.
For that you could get an older vintage Rolex, 1500, or 6694. But those watches are on the small side. For another grand, you could get a Datejust 1601. But what I'd do is save more until you have enough for an Explorer 2 Ref. 16570. That's the most functions for your money, and one of the best values in the SS Professional line.
Hello, thank you for the content. Really appreciate. My wife is Japanese and we are planning to go to Japan. How would you say the chances are to go to a Japanese dealer for a new Rolex. Or better changes like shops like this? Tired of disappointment in the Netherlands 😊
Thanks for watching! Getting a Rolex through an AD here is nearly impossible. If it happens, consider yourself very lucky. You can find just about anything here on the grey market, though, if you're willing to pay for it.
@@watchsymposium thank you for the click response. I have almost no knowledge about the inside and to see if it is real on the grey market. Is it possible that when I buy one watch I do a check somewhere to see if it is real? Like a real dealer for payment. You got some videos about that that I can watch? Thank you very much 🙏🙏
RSC might be a possibility, but I have a feeling they will refuse to authenticate a watch, especially one not purchased through an AD. But more to the point, fakes aren't something you need to worry about here. The bigger concern is getting a piece that's overpolished, badly polished, or that has parts that are authentic, but not period correct.
Speedy fan and, while I was aware of Nakano Broadway as a whole, I hadn't heard of Universal Value so thanks for pointing that one out (and not just focussing exclusively on Rolex like many TH-camrs visiting Nakano!).
Hi Austin! Thank you for the super informative video as i'm doing my research. I'm looking to get a 41 Rolex Datejust with a fluted bezel & black dial when i fly over in Nov! Have you seen any for good deals over there? Especially the newer generations? Thanks!
Awesome video. much appreciated. I am coming to Tokyo and Osaka in Sept . I will certainly drop in to Nakano. Is there anywhere else you would recommend in Tokyo or Osaka?
I have a fat four Kermit which I have never worn. I bought it to hand down to my son when he graduates from college. We picked up an Omega Speedmaster for him when he graduated from high school. I will be in Japan shopping for a Rolex for my daughter.
Hi Austin coming to Japan in a week and have a GS (sbgn003 GMT) with a flat battery. Watch is still under warranty. Will be in Tokyo for 5 days. Do you think it is realistic Grand Seiko could replace the battery for me in that time frame? I'm in New Zealand and if I take it into Seiko here they send it overseas. Thankyou in advance if you get around to answering this question. P.S. battery could have been flat for a year 😬
You never know what kind of stock they'll have at any given time. But there are around 30 of those models for sale in Japan at the moment, and Watchnian has one. But I don't know if it's at another branch in a different part of Tokyo.
What you reccomed with a 10k budget for under 10k rolex it would be my first. I'm in Korea going to Tokyo soon. Not an investment. I just want good watch?
Very informative! Going to Tokyo next week and looking for a modern DJ41. Did you see a decent selection of that model anywhere & how were prices compared to retail & US secondary market? I also am considering a vintage GMT after seeing some of the models here
Just came back from Nakano, I think you missed every shop that is not selling Rolex cause there are a lot 90% of these but ur video is 99% rolex/omega. U should see the stores inside the building its crazy
Great video, thanks for the prices on screen. Liked!
I went there last November. Super fun to just browse even if you're not looking for anything in particular.

Clear / stable video / great commentary.

Thanks Austin! I’m in Tokyo today and you just scratched my Nakano itch - saving me a trip over from Tamachi.
Fun. Thanks.
Amazing selection and prices. Please don"t get contaminated with Omega watches
Older, unloved, that's me. lol Love that moldy oldy black dial date just at Samurai Joy, stainless. do you remember the price? Love your content!
Thanks for watching, George! I seem to remember they didn't have the price of that Rolex visible.

Sans tax, they start at about $10,600 and go up from there. I'd say the standard price hovers around 12 grand without tax.
Only go to Kame Kichi
hello @WatchSymposium. Will be in tokyo 7.7.24-7.17.24. will be doing some damage, Let me know if you want to join the fun.
How does a tourist manage to pay $50-60K cash, given daily withdrawal limits?
Great question. That's probably the biggest hurdle - figuring out how to pay as a tourist.
Where to get good deals for preowned tudor black bay 58 or 41 heritage? Nakano or Ginza?
The best answer I can give you is, sometimes Nakano and other times Ginza.
I might be in Japan soon so would love to meet for a day out and some shopping 🛍️ 🍻 😊
