I found, after 35 years, that life is short, and I've suffered long enough. Time to start living. Sometimes its not about love - its about chosing life and not sinking because of one person for the rest of your life.

Just a reminder that you shouldn’t try compassionate culture with abusive people (emotionally or physically). You deserve better, it’s not your job to “fix” them. Get your distance please and focus on your mental and physical health. I’m a person with sociopathic parents. Try showing them some empathy. They take it all, never get tired of getting, but they won’t give you anything in return. Not all people change. And for the ones who do, let’s meet them again when they have already changed.

There isn't enough context here to appropriately decipher the message. What was the ideological difference? Was it, "I believe in capitalism while you believe in socialism", or was it "I don't believe you have the right to basic respect or to exist and you do"? These are vastly different contexts and change everything. It sounds like the disagreement between the speaker and her father was more the former. She seems to be saying that her father was capable of love and did love her, but she rejected him due to being immature and now has learned her lesson. If that is the case, then please for the love of the lord, make that clear!!!
I'm happy she had a father who loved her. Good for her. But not everyone who "cancels" their parents has that. There are so many people who are gravely compromising their mental and physical health to maintain relationships with abusive people. And for people with this experience, this message is just enabling, flying monkey trash. And I wouldn't "cancel" the speaker for her fetishization/idealization of suffering (I suffered through this 11-minute talk), but I will write a TH-cam comment telling her to bugger off with this self-aggrandizing nonsense.

I am so glad that you have discovered compassion. Not new, people have been doing it for 100,000s of years. Although suffering alongside someone sounds a bit silly... you can sympathise and understand other people's point of view without the suffering. Not quite sure why this is a TED talk..

I needed to see this. I've been really angry lately about how so many charities exclude men in the people they offer help to and I've been hearing people say that it's because of an empathy gap (that society does not have empathy for men.) So maybe there are problems, but I wanted to resist getting resentful toward women, because I know this is a problem with politicians, but not women, so I looked up to see examples of women showing empathy and compassion toward men, and this lady is a great example of that. It was so wonderful to hear her perspective and to keep up my faith in humanity.
