A brilliant season, you have both achieved so much. As for the engine. I would suggest first get an engineer in Barcelona to look at it and estimate a cost to rebuild. If that exceeds £3000 you are approaching the second hand rebuilt engine or second hand low hours lifeboat engine cost. You can get Diesel engines from retired cruise liner lifeboats with very low hours as they are only ever run to test. For around £5000 you should be able to get a brand new Betamarine engine. The Beta company will advise on engine mounts and can make them to fit. I put a new Beta 20 in my boat replacing a 40 year old diesel and never looked back.
Great pair of skippers. Yochi the dog is so cool. Now it is time to find a window. I am sure you’ll manage to find your way. Nothing can stop you. Much safer at sea than getting COVID-19. Keep out from that. Safe Winds! Rule the world from aboard. ❤️🙏❤️
I'm only 50m from Minke. The weather was a little rough over the last weeks, but she's ok. It's pronounced "Sant Feel-e-o de giss-olls" I lived there for a couple of years, yep a great town. Did most of my RYA training up in Palamós, so know the area well. When you come back we can meet up! I hope Nadiyana is keeping well, just PM me if you need any help. Happy Christmas to you all.
you might not believe it but l think this engine runs forever . Well its build in very roughly used Farm and forest vehicles and they still run . just make friends with it and give her a professional overview . thanks for sharing your life with us , best wishes 👍
The old mercedes is a good engine bit getting dated now. A lightweight modern high revving unit like the Nanni/Kubota based four cylinder is just lovely to have. Should suit a hydraulic pump set and burns not more than a couple of litres per hour. Given that the engine is in the cockpit with you, a quiet running set would be much nicer to live with. I run a conventional Perkins 3.8 litre units on an old Borg Warner/shaft drive and though it's easy and cheap to look after, the noise is intrusive. Quieter would always be better. Plus side of a noisy engine...it makes you sail using the wind more. Have a great Christmas.
Your patience is astounding! You've got SV Minke on the water, you've sailed her in all conditions. Just awesome Mark & Nadyana, don't worry about that engine you've got sails🤗 Incredible year, let's hope we see you in 2022. You've got some great buddies who are advising so well on engines💪🏼🙏
These guys desperately need a new engine, firstly for safeties sake, and secondly so we can all enjoys the exploits of this lovely couple......I have a plan. With over 56k subscriber's I'm sure we could all chip in a small amount to get them a brand new engine. Come on people, it's Christmas, let's do this. Let's see how many pledge's we can get on here to achieve this. Then we can all sit back and carry on enjoying these videos. It wouldn't really cost much if enough of us chip in
Excellent season, electric doesn’t have to be super expensive, Sailing Uma put an old fork life motor into their monohull along with some batteries. A possible option and it would make life so much quieter for you on board.
Mark don’t worry at all about talking about your engine as while your doing that your leaving the skegs alone ,what a wonderful few weeks I have had catching up at a steady pace
I’ve liked this boat from the beginning and I think it’s still got more surprises for you than 10 knots! It’s always seemed like it had its own personality and it was safe, but now I’ve noticed it has become a home and it looks like a comfortable, happy home.....except for this engine! Hopefully, it can be rebuilt or fixed without breaking the bank. Good Luck 🍀
Would be very interested to see the block out and good lengthy videos of mark fitting new rings on those pistons. I had a similar smoke issue but it turned out to be thick soot soaked in diesel and oil in the exhaust, I ran it hard for an hour whilst moored and it all caught fire with clouds of black smoke pouring out and eventually cleared leaving me smoke free cruising. Maybe worth looking into the state of the manifold and exhaust for carbon but i guess you have probably checked that. Again I would be very interested in seeing an engine overhaul, it would really help people and for me, I would probably prefer it to watching people sail, but I am a geek who likes to see engineering issues being fixed. Get dirty Mark!!
Considering the stress the engine gives you plus safety concerns a new engine is really the only option. It will be life changing for you and enable you to go further afield. Really impressed with your enthusiasm and dedication to restoring Minke
The love you both have given out to Minke and Yoshi and each other make watching your videos a very enjoyable time for me and everyone else. I am sure you will get your engine problems figured out. Yoshi seems very happy with this part of his life with you both.
Wishing my Family, Loved Ones, Close Friends a Very Blessed New Year. May you all have Wealth Enough for Your Needs, Good Health, Lots of Joy and Love through out 2022.
You both did an amazing job on the catamaran lots of hard work proud of u both what a loving couple glad to see you in the UK back home Mark you are only as strong as your partner and she's a rock Happy Holidays 😄❤️👍🦴🌟🙋⛵🎀🎄love and happiness always Freddie
Buying an engine in the UK and driving it down to Barcelona isn't too much of a hardship. I once drove from Essex to Torrevieja to buy a speedboat and towed it back to England. We stopped in Andorra to go snowboarding on the way out. Funnily enough we only had it going for one season before the engine started knocking. Had it apart 3 times before we gave up and ended up selling the boat. The new owner got a reconditioned engine and still had problems, then I think the gearbox went. We should have just got a brand new block in the first place so we could actually enjoy the boat instead of trying to fix it all the time
Look at what sailing sophisticated lady ... I'm sure Captain Rick wud point you in the correct direction..... I so adore you 3... Happy Yule an new year too!! Stay positive an mode if transportation is coming!!! I just know it will.... Thanks for sharing your lives with us Fare winds an following sea's guy's ✌🏻💗😊❣️
Might want to check to see if your engine has a PCV valve. That could be blocked causing the pressure build up in the crank case. If the positive crankcase breather is blocked, it will cause your gaskets to leak. It’s a thing to check as it might help. Your engine doesn’t seem to have a rod knock issue as far as I can hear over the tablet. Fair winds.
You can see the stress and anxiety in your faces.. A bit of advise that has really helped me. Don't worry, if you worry you suffer twice. Ride whatever horse you have too when you get to it.
I really like the part where you said you prayed and are thankful to God. It's good to remember to be thankful for the good times and the challenging times without the challenging times we would never gain the necessary experience to be better. I am so impressed with how far you both have come and I like that you never give up. I love your optimistic attitudes.
You two are a real inspiration. I admire your indomitable spirit and look forward to your adventures each week. People might not realize but it takes real balls to take an old boat out into the blue water. It’s been fun to watch you solve all the challenges you’ve faced along the way. I’ve got several boat projects going on here in Puget Sound and have had similar challenges to face. I’m a complete amateur as well and watching you guys gives me hope ! Happy New Year !! Stu
Why didn't you stop in Mataro or on of the other ports north of Barcelona? Surely cheaper if you need to stay a while to do an engine rebuild? I am near Barcelona, let me know if you need help?
Merry Christmas and happy new years to you and all. Hillary has a good plan in his comment. I will be looking at new engines for my cat in the future just because of the peace of mind. Yes, it costs a bit more but you will have factory reliability for years to come. There is so much to say but I'll leave it at that. Cheers!
It's a great channel and I enjoy following your learning curve and showing what can be done on a very low budget. I also like you two showing everything, with the many highs and lows. That's what sailing is like. Having a reliable engine is a must. I also feel a diesel would be best, for reliability, safety and for keeping your batteries charged. I would seriously consider two smaller engines, or if you go the single engine route I suggest you replace or refurbish the hydraulic pump and ensure it is also reliable. I have just had a new Beta 20 engine fitted in the UK and was pleasantly surprised by the new cost and was cheaper than an engine rebuild. I wouldn't go the rebuild route with such an old engine, as it will always be an old engine. The fitting costs, labour and new ancillaries added significantly to the new installation price, but if you do a lot yourself you could make significant savings. On the sailing side, it's great to have the speed benefit of a catamaran, but you are right to be cautious and a cat does not have the same feel as a multihull to tell you when it needs reefing, especially on a beam reach with big waves. I suggest you get some good advice from experienced cat sailors. Keep up the good work, enjoy yourselves and good luck. Happy New Year!

Love to see you guys. My advise don’t put new money in that old engine. Try to find two secondhand small inboards, you can find them. Get rid of the hydrolic system and safe a lot of fuel in the future. Good luck and greatings Rob
Love you both and of course Yoshi,, and your little Cat is perfect,,its older boat and she has great potential,,you can tell by the way she moves through the sea,, she's fast and comfortable,, soon you'll have great weather in a few months and you guy's will be cruising the Mediterranean and perhaps Canary islands and other wonderful places,, Happy New Year to you both and Little Yoshi.
That old mb is a workhorse, common as dirt, easily repaired. Get a older car (not boat) mechanic familiar with these old MBs to diagnose it. Once diagnosed, repair, possibly rebuild or replace with same. There are taxis, etc working hard to this day with this motor.
Merry Christmas to you ! Thank you very much for this seasons journey you guys took us viewers with you. I hope and wish a good solution for the engine. A prayer can also help for that. Greetings and God blessings, Frank
You're gonna feel great once the engine is taken care of. You guys have come a long way since the beginning. I'm hoping to meet you one day. I am also a sailor. God bless and God speed
Thanks guys for a wonderful series of videos, I have enjoyed them enormously. I admire your resolve and courage and wish you the very best in the new year. I also have some thoughts for you to consider regarding your tired old donkey. When you first showed us starting your engine, I was keen to listen and watch what happened. Prolonged cranking indicated to me compression blowby, (worn piston rings) and I still believe this is your issue, indeed, you seem to have come to the same conclusion. You have effectively overhauled the top end of the engine and it would appear that its running reasonably soundly in that quarter. As I listen to your engine in your video's; I can hear your pistons slapping in their bores, blue smoke from the exhaust, over pressurisation of the sump, excessive oil burn/usage and lack of power are all classic symptoms of worn piston rings and piston blowby. Don't bother buying a new/replacement engine or finding an electric solution at this time, give it a few years and then look at hydrogen. But wait for the technology to settle down first. Pull off the head again and get the bottom end sorted. Inspect and replenish the crank journals, big and small end bearings, Bores and piston rings and gudgeon pins. Don't go to a marine shop they will be very expensive, use a truck repair or better a machine shop to do the work. It's pretty basic stuff and isn't a problem to any machinist. If there are no scores in the bores, you might even get away with a glaze bore and new rings. I hope this is good food for thought and if you would like to know more private message me. Very best regards and Happy Christmas. P.
I totally agree with you, old diesel engines are such a simple technology that auto repair shops can definitely make repairs. If the ship repair shop at the marina will definitely be expensive
Agreed but with a few extra points...They rebuilt the injectors but not the injection pump. Mechanical diesels are simple, I own 3 of them and take care of a 4th (2-International, a Mitsubishi and a Mercedes), the injection pump and the injectors wear together. You should not repair the injectors and not repair the pump, the new injectors will now pop at the correct pressure but the pump may not be able to reliably provide that pressure. This can also cause long cranking to start but so can air intrusion which I believe they have some of as well. I know they were told this in the beginning but it is normal for people to reject information that will cost them money and they got a lot of information in short order without the acuity to digest it. Sadly the failure to correct it in the beginning will now cost them even more money, such is the way of life. The best move they can make at this point is to buy a new/used Yanmar or Beta because diesel mechanics is not easy or cheap.
Team Wildlings Sailing, a million thanks for your efforts to supply us with great videos. A Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year from The Netherlands!
Missed you for four or so weeks. Happy New Year to you both. I hope this is the year your dreams come true, engine along with other issues are fixed or sorted. Stay safe and will catch up on your blogs.
Multihulls should be fast and fun, almost there. More singing and dancing please. Maybe a cleanup rebore, rings, valve job, injectors, injector pump, timing chain and then you have a nice tight top end with good compression on old crankshaft bearings, so maybe a complete overhaul. Or maybe just two 9 hp outboards. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas Guys. You've done a great job doing what you can on a tight budget and in a foreign country too! As I've commented before, I'm glad you chose the Cherokee so I could see someone fix one up because I missed my chance at doing the same. I'm looking forward to see where you go from here :) Best wishes to you both in the new year.
Dear Wildlings friends, Thank you for the great content throughout the year. It has been absolutely fun watching you take on projects and working around problems, sailing Minke around and enjoying life. Cannot wait to see what the new year will bring!! Merry Christmas to you and your families, best wishes for health and amazing spirits for more adventures to come! As far as the engine is concerned, I think you have spent enough time working around the problems. Perhaps a full blown rebuild might be a good option, without cutting the corners though.
You have given the engine all the love you could, and the engine has rewarded you for this with possibly all it got left to bring you to your destination. I understand that it is not a very comfortable feeling, but you have made it so far! I think that you know by now how important the engine is, and that you will make the right decision for it before you continue your journey. For sure, I will continue to follow your adventures! But for now, I wish you happy hollidays, and all the best for 2022!
Don't agree that they have given the engine all the love. They had people who were not familiar with it poking about. I don't remember if they have checked timing etc, did they do valves clearance? Older engines need maintenance to be reliable, poor timing/valve clearance leads to excessive wear/poor performance.
Happy New Year to you all, really enjoyed the video ,so positive 😀 good luck in the engine department ,regardless of wotever you decide to do ,looking forward to seeing the results .
Thanks for posting and sharing. So nice to hear the message at the end of your video. Glad that I was watching on Xmas eve! I will watch for the poll. I don't think that I have seen it yet...
If you definitely plan on keeping your boat for 20 + years, you will not regret the expense of a new or very lightly used engine. Paying it off in installments over time May blunt the trauma of the cost. Catching some well used engines at the right price is a great option also. Extraordinary maintenance and Care will extend the life of these engines!
M’Dear Wildlings Thanks for the great year of videos…your openness , honesty and love you share. Very merry Christmas and happy festive season to you and yours…& Ciao Bella ciao Bella ciao ciao ciao !!! Love from eastern Aus’ Q ⛵️🍻❤️🎈👏🧳👌🏼👍🏼👍🏼☃️❄️🌈🎄🌞
Keep up the good work guys. Good to see you flying all the sails. That slowmo shot at 11:22 is awesome. Excited to see want you eventually end up doing with your engine. Merry crimbo and happy new year!
Just watched your video. We thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward every week to your updates. You both are just so real and so not pretentious. We hope you and Nadiyana have a lovely Xmas and looking forward to new exciting things in the New Year. Big hug for you both 🤗
Given the size of Minke, have you considered a long leg diesel outboard? I just saw a 15hp diesel outboard with long leg on Alibaba for $1450. A 22 hp one was a bit more . They were air cooled , mounted center on the stern and could be tilted up when sailing. Your could eliminate 2 hydraulic motors, large diesel with pump and 2 propellers and their shafts . I would think the 15 hp would drive Minke at hull speed. Long outboard legs can per purchased for around $500 and you select the diesel engine of your choice. This type would not have the issues of Stillette long leg drives. Just a thought.
Maybe you need to checkout the crankcase ventilation tube, that looked like blowby from pressure buildup in the crankcase , make sure oil isn't coming out the dipstick tube also
Yes that wasnt actually that much spilled oil... Mark theres usually a spring loaded ball valve for crank case ventilation they can stick causing high crankcase pressure and oil to be burnt as it can get forced back up the bores. Check for crank pressure and if it holds it ... Your rings may be worn the scavenging rings stuck in the grooves or clogged up . The next bit is more tricky and that is checking the bores for wear .. after that doing anything needs engine out and rebuild or replacement .. Hows your german ? I think this chap may have an answer. th-cam.com/video/ZvsCfuGXLQ4/w-d-xo.html
Since you asked for comments. Wishing you guys a super awesome Christmas as well. Not sure why but your video brought back 2 sailing memories 1. had friends that lived on their sailboats (C&C) year round in Ontario, Canada. Boats stayed in water/ice ... bubblers to keep the ice from freezing around the boats... with Jan/Feb in the - 18C range the morning hike to the club for a shower got old real fast. 2. Got caught several times in nasty (Lake Ontario) storms - nothing like sailing through a lighting storm at night.
You have learned so. Much about that Diesel.... It certainly is my suggestion since you are asking us haha ha don't loose that knowledge rebuild it and frankly your boat will be original. Happy new year may god bless your travels
Having spent so much time getting the hydraulics sorted, dismantling the engine could be a good direction to go. I don't know how the costs work out, but a re-bore and new rings and possible pistons as a target initially would give a good chance to assess the bottom end. Then you would know the best way to go, repair or replace parts. A new engine would be better but I expect finances will make the final decision. I will be following you both into the new year, so here's my best wishes to you both, plus one little sailor as we go into the new year.
Great season.....loved it all....looking forward to seeing what happens with the engine.....I am no help as to what to do.....although I think I favor rebuilding what you have due to ease of refit.....everything to reinstall would line up making that part so much easier for you....but for goodness sake do a first class rebuild and do not cut ANY corners. Also a good time to rebuild aux components like starter and alternator and fuel pump as well....Get things squared away in the engine compartment and put some good insulation where you can to soften the noise. Also get your cooling system properly cleaned and serviced i.e. water pump impeller even if it was just changed. Take no chances with the new rebuild. Well I guess I had an opinion after all. LMAO. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Top notch Video Mark, Nadiyana and Yoshi ! I think you learned some good stuff on that sail. Cats go fast, and they are comfy. Minke is expecting that kind of sailing. Having all that sail up dampens the motion. If that engine floats, perhaps it is worth keeping. Really.... get a new one. What about two small diesels, if there is space in the hulls. Ah... your email just came in, and I will reply. Merry Christmas to you all !
Go Minke GO!!!! Merry Christmas you two and happy new year. I wish I were there to rebuild that engine for you, it would run like a super tuned race car.../Boat. The crank case Pressure is from compression Leaking past the worn rings or Broken rings.
Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year. As for the engine, it's usually less expensive to rebuild than to replace. If you need to rebore the cylinders you will need to get oversize pistons, not just new rings.
I hear you Mark, having a sketchy engine is no fun. This should be top of the list for your peace of mind. I noticed in your video a Coronado 25 at anchor, I owned one years ago, good memories. Happy Holidays you 3, and a much better New Year. Love your videos. Fairwinds.
A brilliant season, you have both achieved so much. As for the engine. I would suggest first get an engineer in Barcelona to look at it and estimate a cost to rebuild. Fantastic advice!

You're gonna feel great once the engine is taken care of. You guys have come a long way since the beginning. I'm hoping to meet you one day. I am also a sailor. God bless and God speed
Merry christmas and have some nice and warm family moments ! xxx
Thank you so much for a great year of content loved every minute of it, and all the best to the 3 of you for 2022
Thanks guys for a wonderful series of videos, I have enjoyed them enormously.
Thanks for all the amazing videos you have both accomplished so much! So glad that Yoshi joined the crew, he loves you both so much. 🥰
Really look forward to your videos. You both really grow on me. And your little 🐕 is so loving. Be safe, happy and healthy. From an old sea dog.
The Wildlings seem to go from strength to strength.Born seafarers.Happy Christmas and happy new year.
IMO you should do option #2 and get a good quality diesel motor regardless of the mounting mods.
Great video. If you consider putting in a reef you should do it. Better to be safe and take it out if you find it was unnecessary.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, full of adventures Mark, Nadia and Yoshi. Greetings a bit south, from Lisbon
Enjoy following you, as always. Its been amazing seeing your journey this year. Wish you all the best for the next.
It has been a good year spending it with you all really enjoyed it thank you from Panama City Florida we love you all
Merry Christmas Guys.
You've done a great job doing what you can on a tight budget and in a foreign country too!
As I've commented before, I'm glad you chose the Cherokee so I could see someone fix one up because I missed my chance at doing the same.
I'm looking forward to see where you go from here :)
Best wishes to you both in the new year.
Bella ciao bella ciao bella ciao ciao ciao !! :-) Have the Best wind you can for this new year coming !!
Dear Wildlings friends,
Thank you for the great content throughout the year.
Merry Xmas and happy New Year with lots of safe sailing. I hope Santa brings you a new engine.
Enjoyed the seasons videos, it is insanely cute to watch you guys like 'think alike do alike even dance alike' !!..
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, may your travels be safe and sublime. The very best wishes to you and your dear ones
I love your channel, are you both ok as we haven’t seen a post for over a week. I hope your safe and well. Keep up the dream
Have a good Christmas, glad minke made it safely to Barcelona. Gonna have that song stuck in my head for a while now
Happy New Year to you all, really enjoyed the video ,so positive 😀 good luck in the engine department ,regardless of wotever you decide to do ,looking forward to seeing the results .
Yup known as blow by is a condition of worn rings, and God has blessed you both, Yoshi too.
You had a very busy season. Looking forward to seeing you back on the water come spring.
M’Dear Wildlings
Thanks for the great year of videos…your openness , honesty and love you share.
Very merry Christmas and happy festive season to you and yours…&
Ciao Bella ciao Bella ciao ciao ciao !!!
Love from eastern Aus’

Keep up the good work guys. Good to see you flying all the sails. That slowmo shot at 11:22 is awesome. Excited to see want you eventually end up doing with your engine. Merry crimbo and happy new year!
Happy Christmas kids. Here's to a great 2022. Fair winds...
Wishing all 3 of you
Merry Christmas.
I've binge watched your shows.
I find them really good.

Merry Christmas Mark and Nadiyana and all the best for the new year, may it be full of love, joy, good health, wealth
LMAO. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Hope you three have a great new year, thanks for the videos
I've never been to Spain but I kinda like the music. Merry Christmas wishing you the best.
Merry Christmas to the crew of Minke!!
Take care and have fun!!
Cheers for Guam! 🇬🇺
Merry Xmas Wildings and Season Greetings!!! Stay Safe!!!
Go Minke GO!!!! Merry Christmas you two and happy new year. I wish I were there to rebuild that engine for you, it would run like a super tuned race car.../Boat. The crank case Pressure is from compression Leaking past the worn rings or Broken rings.
Merry Christmas to you both, thanks for all the great content this year.
Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year. As for the engine, it's usually less expensive to rebuild than to replace. If you need to rebore the cylinders you will need to get oversize pistons, not just new rings.
You two have done amazingly!
I hear you Mark, having a sketchy engine is no fun. This should be top of the list for your peace of mind. I noticed in your video a Coronado 25 at anchor, I owned one years ago, good memories. Happy Holidays you 3, and a much better New Year. Love your videos. Fairwinds.
So Inspiring Your Perseverance Is Awesome I So enjoy your video's Hope You are blessed And get A new Motor. Blessings .Prayer Never Hurts.
Great season guys, your dedication and hard work has paid dividends.
Sort the engine and the world is your oyster!
Merry Christmas to you all and please have a very Happy New Year!
I understand that old motors make excellent moorings for small boats ;-)
See? The engine's fine! Never let you down .... Merry Christmas & all the best!
Merry Christmas guys. Please pray about your ventures. Wishing you the very best in 2022
Sailing Uma used a repurposed forklift engine. Seems to have worked for them?
Is your rigging tuned? Wondering what that creaky aluminum sound is. Just the boom maybe.
