One time a buddy and I stopped off at a touristy fly shop on our way to a popular river here in Oregon. We just wanted a couple extra flies. Staff told us it's way too windy on the river and just go home. So we shortened our leaders and caught some gorgeous trout.
Good advice. I live in Chinook country where the winds often exceed 100 KpH. In those days I can't even get a leader tied up or a fly tied on before my leader becomes a tangled mess. Its on those days where you test your mental fitness.
I practice in very windy conditions, then any other days casting is a breeze! 😑Sorry! But I really do. Fish get active with waves on the water. I love roll casting downwind along a grassy bank with a foam hopper or frog, I’ve caught Many fish on 3 & 4wt and some trophy largemouth on 8wt. When forecast says 20-25 with bigger gusts..my plans are already made! Thanks for all you do and share Tom! 👍👍🎣💨🙂
Great advice. I spent about 3 hours wading out of a section on a cold windy day with a streamer hook impaled on my neck just below the jaw line and ended up going to the ER to have it removed several hours later. It was not painful after going in, but it was within an inch of a carotid artery. Since that experience I try to be very aware of what the wind is doing and sometimes even cast with my left hand instead of my right, so the cross wind is blowing the fly away from me .... not moving the fly closer. A hat with a wide brim can offer some protection as well, especially for small flies and those moments rising fish have my full attention and I might forget about the wind. Great video as always.... hopefully my experience can slightly amplify the importance of your advice here.
CONSIDER : OUTLAW CASTING SHORTER LEADER LINE WEIGHT - USE 1 UP & SNAP A SPIN CAST FORWARD WEAR A HAT - YOU MAY GET HOOKED STAY FOCUSED & CATCH FISH. LUCK IS WHERE SKILL MEETS PREPARATION
Your position can be changed because of high winds. If the wind is down stream you can cast your backing and a long leader. Know spots you can fish 3 pools without moving your feet. If wind upstream or sideways I switch to 10 and a half ft with 11 weight forward line. Heavy leader. Often fish a hitch in the wind. The wind wips the water and reduces visibility. Hitch slows and makes fly stand out. Up north there is always wind. Don't see many lines smaller than a 9wf. Fishing since 64 and never owned an 8 or 8 weight rod. Keep your glasses on and your hood up.
Am I the only one who switches casting arms to deal with wind? I also do it because of a bad shoulder, old sports injury, I need to rest the joint sometimes.
I recently got into fly fishing in the last two years and I have flown giant scale rc planes for my entire life, both of which are effected by wind very much and I swear every single time I go to do either the wind is blowing lol.

I think it was Lefty Kreh who said ‘if it’s too windy get out the spinning rod’. Which foe me means I just stay home. Lol

Thanks again, Tom.
BTW, I really enjoyed the live Tie-Off. Looking forward to the next one!
All good advice. For me, I like the pretending your, " back cast is your forward cast".
Thanks Tom
Great instruction and great advice.
Good advice. Ya know, you bear some resemblance to actor Tom Skerrit, who played the father figure in "A River Runs Through It". THE movie.
Excellent. Thank you Tom.
Can you guys PLEASE make a version of the new sling pack that is meant to go over your right shoulder. Upside-down pack is rough.
Thanks Tom.

Tom. Not Tim.

I went fishing in Eastern WA last weekend, the wind was 30mph. It blew my weighted streamer out of the water, upstream.
In all this crazy wind lately, anything helps!!!
👍👍👍
Really helpful
