I collect squirrel cards, the art cards, and decks now. I’ve sworn off pack opening specifically because variants are absolutely killing me. Got a few pages of squirrels and I’m never going back. Is it stupid? Absolutely and that’s why I love it. I went in to a game shop and bought 50 tokens not too long ago. The joy I get sitting down to ply my stupid deck with a stack of fifty tokens and answering “jeez, do you have enough squirrel tokens” with a dead eyed, stone cold “no” is about all the joy I need 😂.

I don’t play commander, I was building the obvious Chatterfang commander deck, then they opened up modern on Sunday at my LGS. My options were one of squirrels or four-of’s and uh, it doesn’t show on the internet but my squirrel tattoo left me one course of action. I’m going to have my butt handed to me, the modern players have absolute bruiser decks. But yes, now it is time to assemble the Chatterfang commander deck. I’m seriously considering giving up pioneer entirely due to lack of squirrel support. I’m hoping they print Chatterfang into standard, but I’m sure there’s “reasons” and “logic” to not put something that “broken” into standard. *stares angrily at Atraxa*
I’m working on my second set of Baldur’s Gate Etched Foil legendary creatures and backgrounds. I feel like they’re really underpriced and won’t be reprinted soon. I also did some assumptions and math and calculated the print run of even the uncommon etched cards is likely to be on par with revised commons, so it’s not really an insane supply.
I get what youre saying. I wish I could get on board but Im too down on MtG right now. I was big on collecting sets.The last set I made a binder for was Dominaria. Great set, super fun draft. Loved hunting all the cards down. It was the end of an era. I miss set collecting and building up a binder for each set. I started with Unlimited through Mirage, then picked it up again with Scars of Mirrodin to Dominaria. The flashy stuff quickly got out of hand, so I just stuck to draft play. I like the game, but really dislike the predatory buisness model WotC has gone with. It has taken the joy out of collecting. I decided to move on. If want to play, I have plenty of cards, or I can jump on arena and just grind away.
Love the thought process here, Josh! As someone who collects what they love, I realize not all of it may have an insane amount of monetary value, but it does bring me joy. I do get excited when I open my binders and see the collections of showcase treatment cards I have, or even collections of older cards (currently working on a master set of The Dark). I know its silly to think of it this way, but with how volatile the markets are for TCG's in general, I collect what I collect and if ever put into a situation where I need to sell it, I hope its just at a great time for that product and will sell well above my expectations. But I honestly hope to keep these with me until the end, dire situations aside. I also don't use my collections as play pieces so I don't really collect based on how usable the cards are in formats, but it is a nice way to get a collection for yourself. Heck even just getting those planetary shock lands are gonna be a great collection for players and collectors alike!

I think you can sum up the spirit of your video by your statement: The things you collect should be things you enjoy. While I'm liquidating a majority of my MtG stuff I'm actually still collecting a few things like Kaladesh Masterpieces and legendary creatures from the Legends set. I don't think the Reserve List will hold for more than a few more years, and if it does then a lot will be eclipsed by Wizards creating a new Vintage with new/updated versions of RL cards (snow triple lands, loss of life P9, stuff like that). So for now, like you said, I'll collect what brings me joy when I see them.
I love how you’re approaching this and yes I definitely agree with the idea of collecting what you love, but I disagree with you on the reserved list - im excited to see what comes of it tho! I think you can do this and still dig for some hidden value if you are tied to the idea of what your collection is worth.
@@HometownTcg desperation is a stinky cologne and Wizards/Hasbro over the last couple years has started to smell a bit funky, is all I'm saying :) There isn't a strong legal standing to enforce the RL really, and again, if Hasbro is desperate and feels the need to hit 'the switch' I have absolutely no doubt that they will, either by reprinting RL or designing a new powered format from the ground up; to be honest I think it'll be the latter since it's less of a hassle and they'll make more money in the end.

Smack that mic! Haha... I personally like hunting for cards in the wild. There are a couple of local used video game stores that also buy MtG cards. So, from time-to-time I go and look for interesting cards that I don't already have. It's how I ended up with a mess of Plague Rats.

Magic is such a interesting game i have played tcgs since i was 8 i collect all kinds of cards and yet my magic collection is trades or cards i need for decks i do have a few but they are all older cards and 1 is dragons that have famous last words of people they eat and the other is goblins jumping on the bed lol

My brother in law found a huge case of binders in the back of his basement today. Apparently its all my old set collections. No foil madness just normals but its fun i might get back in just getting the cheapest nonfoil version and set collecting again
I've personally found joy in gathering an entire set. However, I use 1 binder for the set and only showcase 1 version of each card. So if there are special/alternative arts or promos ect. I dont concern myself with those higher #s in the set, if I get a specal art of a card I put it not in its actually "collector number" i put it in the base cards collector number place. So having a special version feels like a joy not like this rediculious task to obtain every special art and promo card. I also dont collect tokens or commander cards. Only base set cards. Thats what makes me happy. 1 version of each card in the set is enough for me.
I'm also only collecting current sets as they happen and only if I like them. I adds more fun to when I'm drafting because opening current packs means I might be able to find or trade for a card I don't have yet and I know that it's a legitimate version of a card because I watched them open the pack.

I still collect the basic core set of every set. It is very difficult. By chance would you have any commander masters set for trade? That is the only 2023 set I did not start to collect due to it being crazy expensive!
i love this take. It's so easy to hate on everything WOTC does with modern magic. So it's refreshing to see someone take a nuanced and rational approach to finding ways around the hate. I think the Gilded Foils could be a smaller version of the Double Feature foils. So I like that idea with the charms....as you know. haha
Me who plays and collect; I buy singles and boosters 😂 im constantly buying 1x of every commander set from a series such as 4x new commander decks ill buy 1x of them and then whenever yhe next series comes out i get another. I only buy the ones which are most competitive and consistent aswell as useful cards encase I got to scrap it. Currently on my buy list is the new commander set.. I'm eyeing the artifact deck coming out in July 2023 and the Dr.Who set in august.. I went with Hobbits for tlotr though 😂 FOOD and 2nd breakfasts🎉
hey thanks for the video. i want to start collecting magic cards. you know how pokemon has sets and each sets has certain number of cards.. does mgt have a list like they do of what cards in each set. and idc about the reserve list. ive been trying to set the new sets. i know this year at the end we have 3 or 4 more magic cards set to come out.... how do i know im not buying repeating cards from the sets? thank you once again
Im not sure what you are asking, but if you are asking about what cards are in what sets you can use any number of online applications like Scryfall to see what you can get in each set. To know what is coming in the next set you will have to closely follow spoiler season! Yeah a couple have (mortify being what comes to mind) but it wasn’t super popular and it didn’t seem to affect the desire for the player reward promo but this is a great example that nothing is safe - you must do your best to enjoy what you collect and buy things that are playable or have meaning to you! I just buy lots of penny to ten cent cards that aren’t in my collection the only people I play with make decks from my cards anyway so i don’t get the power creep from playing low power decks haha
Two things: 1. I would love to believe this- That Ghidorah, King of the Cosmos would be un-reprintable. Thus retaining its value or gaining more. The fact remains that Illuna, Apex of wishes(what Ghidorah actually is) has been reprinted into a commander precon. At first the mutate mechanic was frowned upon but is building up a more knowledgeable fanbase of the mechanic. Which means further reprint viability. Which also means lessening value of Ghidorah do to its accessibility despite the glamour of its variant form. The same is true for your full art spells. And the legality of those along with the fact players will often be asked to look up what the card actually does. 2. Wizards has proven that profit is their measuring stick. So much so that they tested the reserved list with 30th anniversary. They have proven they are not above loopholing anything sacred. They did this as well by mysteriously "finding" lost legends and adding them to DomU. They have also proven they can reprint old border and old foiling methods. They have proven that kaladesh relic borders are meaningless. They have proven even with serials that they will mass reprint non serial versions with serials. Just to act like youre getting the better version. They also have proven that they will mass print serials in LotR. Lets also not forget the pinkerton situation. Hasbro/WotC have not proven they value your collection or their fanbase. What they do know is that you as a consumer will suck whatever teat they offer you. And that you will still parade for them because you want to love the game despite the fact that the company that produces it does not give a damn about you or any of us. They are not rewarding WPN's instead threatening them. They arent providing prize support commensurate with the glamour of the products they profess are magnificent. And this is all without fair mention of the price gouging, bulk seeding, pack size reduction, quality control, distribution "anomalies," player ranking system, online gaming desparities and lack of connection to the fanbase. The most messed up thing is the player base knows all of this to be true and they are carrying their crosses to the site of their annihilation. My only solution is to sit back for a bit and watch everyone get nailed. As far as my collection is concerned i consider it a total loss. I am summarily putting it into storage for about 30 years. I will keep one deck to battle with. Ive written my name on all of the cards in it. If they are condemned to valuelessness then no one beyond my grave will have the luxury of these once loved relics other than to play with- assuming the meta doesnt smash these once beautiful things into sheer unplayability of which i have no doubt is the microtransactive plan for the future of MtG.

When mtg was still 89$ a box I used to make play set sets of every set.
