    I know a lot of Eurorack people don't like screens but if you're going to use one, this looks like the most fun out of them! Nice work so far.

      I don't mind screens one bit. In fact I have the video out expansion for the NerdSeq. It's the amount of patchable control that matters to me.

    It looks like form over function. Not to say that's a necessarily a bad thing if what you're looking for is a fun, unusual way to play a synth, but personally I'm more interested in the actual sound production over a (very very cool) UI.

    DOOOOOOPE!!! As a lover of Modular AND Astrophysics I'm already in "Shut up and take my money" territory. Can't wait for the Kikcstarter! One potential idea for an expander (and apologies if you've already thought of this), if you have four trigger outputs for when each Satellites enter the Scope, and four gate outputs that would remain high for as long as the Satellite is in the scope, then you would have a wicked way to trigger rhythmically related events all around your system!
    Ohhhhhhh and maybe one extra trigger out somewhere that fires every time all the satellites are in conjunction?

  • @daccrowell4776

    Ok, you have my attention...🤯
    This is ridiculously brilliant. I wouldn't keep it from being a jack-of-all-trades, and here's why:
    First up, while there's been a parade of JOAT modules over the years, they all seem to fall into "areas" of the typical Eurorack gamut. JOAT modules in of themselves are actually rather diverse, tbh. And while there ARE modules that are capable of doing nearly ALL functions (oughta insert a typical Modular grid satire build with ∞ rows of ∞ hp of Maths here), they eventually settle into users' mindsets as one thing or another.
    Which gets back to this module. AFAIK, that control paradigm lends itself to A LOT of possible controller uses. Poly-mod wheel? Slapping several together in a LONG cab to make something like an armonica? Fun with comparators to mess with sequencing? The analog version of one of the "Electroplankton" instruments? Some infinite source of curves to make this The Analog Thing sitting about 5' away go berserk? The "motor" for a Leslie as redesigned by M.C. Escher?
    Yeah! That and more. But DO let the firmware "sprawl" in terms of potential uses for a huge variety of users. Then you get the fun of watching this thing go places you'd never envisioned.
    Except for one really, REALLY serious ergonomic issue...
    If you box in the "controller" part between three walls of jacks...how do you expect anyone to enjoy using it AS a controller?
    Consider: when you have users who view the bottom row as being the "controller/interface row" in sensible system design, it makes way more sense to relocate ALL jacks to the top of the module. By doing this, you remove the "box", allowing better live performance control. It also keeps yr.typ patchcord snarl away from the control surface (unless your patchcords obscure everything for three feet in all directions, at which point you either need therapy or to leave your Bandcamp in the replies. Maybe both, who knows?).
    Seriously, tho... there's been a lot of other controllers over the years, and aside of something hooked to a MIDI interface and various touchplate schemes, there's really not been something that offers quite such a simple, elegant interface on a module that's also a very potent springboard for many sorts of sonic AND control explorations. Just that one UI change, and this will be absolutely perfect!
    Geez...this thing AND Maths...? Makes my brain bleed!!! 👍

    • @UnknownDevices_
      @UnknownDevices_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Analog inputs are processed on the daisy as the esp32 has even worse analog inputs 😅 I didn't explore their precision and noise performances yet but so far it already outperformed the esp32

    • @jg_ultra

  • @pjforde1978
    @pjforde1978 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is wildly compelling. I'm not even into Eurorack and I kind of want this, just because it's so beautiful.
    If you're willing to humor some questions from a fellow geek, what screen are you using? Most of the round displays appear to be RGB and GC9A01-based. But the question that will haunt my dreams tonight... did you seriously build an ECS framework from the ground up to handle the graphics on this module? That's one heck of a rabbit hole, but huge if true. I would love (kill) to get my hands on an ECS mcu graphics framework.

    • @UnknownDevices_
      @UnknownDevices_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First thing first: I've lied to all you, the screen is square, a pretty common 128x128, 4bit, ssd1327-based display, masked by the round touchwheel.
      The game engine is ECS-ish, it's loosely based on "ThatGameEngine", misses some features I don't need yet (collision/quadtrees) and it's a bit messy in some places but it really shines when building ui scenes. The engine is available here: github.com/unwndevices/eisei_oled , and any help in maintaining it is appreciated (again, I'm messy, you should see my room).

    • @pjforde1978
      @pjforde1978 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@UnknownDevices_ you sly fox! I found myself wondering if the display was square after I posted. You must cover one side of the through-holes when soldering so the pin headers don't pop up. Weirdly, I'm kind of jealous of your greyscale support, which doesn't seem like a thing in ssd1306 world, at least without quickdraw hacks that divide your FPS.
      Important question, since this video has me rethinking the UI on a non-Eurorack, non-sound producing, not space-themed piece of music gear I've been working on all year: would you be happy or sad if I borrowed the spirit of your "round" display + capacitive ring approach to replace the crappy rotary encoder that is at the center of my design? I have gone through five stages of grief with the physical impossibility of making it support faster turns; your concept is superior in every dimension.
