I can't thank you enough for providing us this tutorial in a way that is very easy to understand. My eyes are now wide open when it comes to why we should shoot in raw mode and what can be done in processing our photos. I am a total noob in this entire process but I am now excited to apply the lessons you taught me! Thank you Dom!!

thats well explained. appreciate your efforts and indeed you have good teaching abilities. DPP4 now makes much sense to me. Love and greetings from India... God bless.
I have just discovered Canon DPP, and I am very pleased that I have also discovered your TH-cam channel. It is very informative, and the instructions are easy to understand. I look forward to expanding my knowledge of this fantastic Free programme with your help. Thank you.
GREAT, I don't fear anymore to use DPP4. the best Ive ever followed and your English is easy to listen, although my mother langage is French Regards from Brussels
Fabulous and fantastic. Worth every second I watched. Now that I have a basic understanding, I won't feel so intimidated, when I open the Canon Digital 4. I'm sure I will come back numerous times in the future to refresh or to clarify what I require refreshing. I Certainly subscribed!
Thanks for the great tutorial. Have not used Canon DPP in a long time and your tutorial helped me a lot. I have subscribed and plan to come back for more.
Thank you so much, Dom - this has been a tremendous clip for me to learn - and I'm even a lot more enthusiastic now about my camera (EOS 90D) and editing my photos!! Thanks again! 🙂
Great Tutorial. Well, it seems like this program is doing it's job somehow but isn't the first choice when it comes to usability. But for my usecase just fine.
Excellent. Glad that you post videos on DPP. DPP is the best editor for Canon raw files and there are no many channels that post videos on DPP. Thanks.
Thank you for the comment. DPP is very useful. I've only become aware that there aren't many videos about it after I made a few of these tutorials and am happy to contribute 😀
Excellent tutorial, very useful! Thanks for doing it :) Tip: When saving images, you can resize in the same process. Maybe you don't need it to be a full size, for example if you want to use it on a web page or similar.
Hi, great video, thanks, Quick question though. How do I change the format of the date from US style to UK style. My laptop is correct and camera is correct but on DPP it show MM/DD/YY and not DD/MM/YY. Thanks.
A very informative tutorial indeed. Will now start applying the DPP skills you have kindly shared to the RAW and JPEG images taken on my Canon EOS Camera. Thank you.
Wonderful instructions....I want to use DPP but for some reason...and I am sure it's me...once I open the edit window everything stops for me. The system folder tree is there on the left but no matter what I do I cannot get DPP to see the Canon photos on my desktop. I have made some screen shots and if needed I could send them to you so you might tell me what I am doing wrong. I am using a 2022 macbook....any advice would be wonderful....Joseph McGrath
Best tutorial yet! I watched several of your other tutorials, but this one is fantastic with everything in one place. DPP4 is not that intuitive. Thank you for putting this together. Now on to editing my Alaska grizzly pics from my latest trip.
Awesome tutorial! I've been shooting in Jpg for years now, but investing in better lenses I guess I should invest into better editing as well. Put my camera on Raw and downloaded DPP4. Didn't even know Canon had a free software for this but this is nice =). Thanks!
Dom really enjoy your videos and as I only use DPP to edit my photos I find they help me a lot, my question is does DPP able you to get a similar affect to "dodge and burn" and how does the colour blur work and affect your photo, I look forward to your response, keep up the good work. Hi Thank you for watching. I believe that you can connect the camera via WiFi. Here is a link to a video that Canon released on how to do it: th-cam.com/video/yr08AxKqvsE/w-d-xo.html
I am just starting out with DPP and haven't even opened a photo yet, but your presentation is clear, precise and very useful to the beginner like myself. Also the listing of the sections in the time line list is also very useful. I just bought a Canon RP and I was able to download DPP freely. I also use the EOS Utility 3 to take my product photography photos and it is fantastic to be able to see the scene on my iMac 24" M1.
Dear Dom. Thanks for your videos. They are excellent. I'd like to ask you a question: how to add comments or notations about a photo? Is there way to do it?
Hi Oscar, thank you very much for watching and for the question. Unfortunately I have not come across this option and I've pretty much tried most of the settings in this software. It would be a really cool feature though.
Excellent tutorial, I finally got off the adobe tit and now I'm having to learn a bunch of new programs but this editor is super powerful and I'm looking forward to implementing it :)
Genial y excelente tu trabajo. Muchísimas gracias por tu aporte a los que se interesan en aprender a trabajar con esta fantástico programa. Gracias nuevamente.
Dom, I have been a subscriber for a while. After watching this I realized I need to watch more of your videos. You are excellent! I have one question: Do you ever breath? I hope you are editing your breaths out or you can hold your breath and talk the most of any human on this planet! Great video 😊
Hello and thank you for watching the videos. Great spotting 😅 I do indeed edit my breaths out. Don't really know why but they annoy me and also make the videos a little bit longer.
A film user from way back, I only recently acquired my first digital SLR, a 1D Mk2N with which I’ve already taken some beautiful images, but until now I’ve only availed myself of JPEGS. Your DPP4 series has opened up the world of RAW to me & I look forward to working with it! BTW to those who’ve posted about your rapid style: Even on my 17-year old laptop there is a “settings” function on the video screen which allows playback at 3/4 speed, so the vast amount of information can be easily digested! 🙂
I will save this video, it's a real reference item - you're a hero ! Now after 2 years using DPP, I understand how to burn-in like on a print, using the 'adjust specific areas' tab ! Ps. do you know how to apply lens corrections for a non-Canon lens ? ( I do ... )
I thank you for the excelent and extremely clear tutorial. I'd like to ask you a question about downloading the photos from the camera or memory card. How do you organize them? Do you take a short look at them where thy are, create named folders and then select and grab a group of photos that belong to the theme and drop them there? Is there a better way to do it?
Hi thank you for watching and for the question. I usually have a folder for all my photos and in there I have subfolders with the name of the place they were taken and the dates. Once I import the photos from my camera into the folder I do an initial sort and get rid of anything that I know I don't like or won't use. The rest I end up editing and correcting and I just leave them there as JPGs, unless I think they are really great and I might use them in the future for printing or to post somewhere then I leave a separate sub folder for the RAW files. I also back up all my photos to an external hard drive every now and then. Probably not the best process but that's how I do it.
A really useful video, thank you. You mentioned in the video that you have to click another tab to see how your cropped image looks, but you can also click back on the crop tab.
Hi, Thank you for watching. It is possible but not the easiest thing to do as DPP4 doesn't have a built in signature tool. However I did manage to find a work around and have previously made a video on how to do it, have a look here: th-cam.com/video/d4OKsubnsrA/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps.
Hi, just happened upon your tutorials. Great tutorials and very helpful. Could you help me please. I have taken Some portrait photos on auto mode that I'd like to edit in DPP4. Is that possible and if so can you point me in the right direction please.
thank you so much for this! i'm thinking of trying this soon (now, probably!) & this was a perfect tutorial for me. i'm sure i'll be dipping in to it quite a bit! TY again! (a bit later) i think i know why i gave up years ago; i don't have that row with the 'before & after' buttons & can't find how to get them. also, mine didn't quite look like yours after pressing the 'edit' button. didn't get any tools/panels on the right, tho' i have now found them! (found b4 & after, but it should be there to begin with, i think!!)
Following tutorials. It's always interesting how different editions are layed out differently, to the left of the tool pallet, I have an additional button, the filter/sort button.
Nice, I wasn't even aware of that, thanks for letting me know. There are probably numerous ways to customise these also so everyone might have something slightly different in various places.
I thought your tutorial was excellent... and as I watched it a second time, I edited a photo along with you; however, when I got to the cropping tab it stopped working. Also, the before and after feature stopped working (it grayed out).... it's probably my computer. But I did want to say for someone like me, who is retired and is learning this as an option to Adobe... I wanted to say thanks for putting this tutorial together.
well done and thanks… I’d be interested to have a bit of information as to what more one gets from also having light room… because with the LR monthly tarif it quickly becomes quite expensive… what more do you get thats really useful for the average user… ?
I'll be honest, I find light room much more responsive, DPP4 take long to do almost anything. Light room has the masking effect which I find very useful. Other thank that you can use DPP4 for a lot of your basic adjustments but its more limited for special effects.
Thank you for the education. I'm starting to take photos now (in addition to the videos I have already been making) and this tutorial was just what I needed. Thank you so much again! 👍
Loved watching the videos and I did download the DPP4 however I found that on my M1 mac it did not work so well for me. Looks like Im staying with Lightroom.
thanks - great over view - one question - you stated that you could NOT save your modified raw as a raw photo . if you go to file tab in the upper left it comes up as the orginal name. i changed the name to add "rev and my initials" to desk top - it worked. the hard part was to find where it was in my files. finally found it - inserted into file next to the orignal. any thoughts on this PLEASE let me know as i started using the "collections" (which is useful) but once in there i have no idea where they actually are ????
Hi Bill, thanks for the comment. When you add photos to a collection in DPP4, the actual photo file is still in the same folder on your computer drive where is was. DPP4 just creates like an index to display the photos added to the collection together but doesn't actually move your files around from your computers drive.
@@DomsMediaZone Thanks for the reply. I guess My second question was not completely explaining my issue. So I'll try again - when we use the collections created folders and place photos into them, is there a way to find out where those photos are in their original folders from the collections folder?
@@billz4795 I see what you mean now, just tried it and been clicking around for 5 minutes and it doesn't show which folder the actual file is located in. I've tried right clicking it and going into the info section, shows everything except the folder location. Seems like they haven't included it unfortunately.
@@DomsMediaZone just came across another saving edited photo issue, and not sure what is going on. Edited JPEG hit save as - changed name - from upper left pull down . Go to file where Dave outside of DPP 4 and it's not my edited photo.?
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm using Canon R6 to take photos, but I couldn't even open my photos, because they are CR3 files. To just get the thumbnails, it takes forever to load. I'm using a 2020 MacBook pro, is it because my laptop is not good enough? Thank you!!!
Hi Jade, It should work if you ask me however I do not know the specs of your computer. Is there anything else that runs really slowly on it or just DPP4? I've googled the required specs for Mac and DPP4 and the below are the minimum recommended specs. Also do you have tons of photos in one folder? Sometimes when there are too many in one folder it can take a long time for DPP4 to load them all into memory. Macintosh OS (operating system) Mac OS X 10.8 to 10.9 Model PC with one of the above OS preinstalled CPU Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz or higher (recommended Core i series or later) RAM (memory) 2.0 GB or more of RAM (4.0 GB or more recommended) Hard disk drive Installation: Min. 200 MB of available space Operation: Min. 256 MB of available space Display Resolution: XGA (1024 x 768) or more (1600 x 1200 or more recommended) Colors: 16 bit color (65536 colors) or more
Thanks so much for the tutorial. I usually use photoshop elements, but I recently got an rf 16mm for my R5, and I need a way to use DPP to get the lens profile and make basic edits, then save as TIFF to further edit as needed in Photoshop Elements. This is exactly the information I needed. Cheers, Ted
Thank you for the feedback. To be honest I find that they both work pretty good and if the noise is minimal it's very difficult to notice the difference.
Hi, I'm not sure which country you're in or if it makes a difference but here is the one I used in the UK: www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/software/digital-photo-professional.html?os=windows%2010%20(64-bit)&language=
1:04:59 you are wrong. have you ever tryed Ctrl+S or Ctrl+Shift+S ? Lol (or Menu - File - "Save" / "Save as..." ) it's exactly "resave this RAW file" and "save this RAW file to new RAW copy of this RAW file" (respectively). with new recipe of course P.S. I don't believe you never changed folder when editing some photos, but DPP4 always asked "OK to save edited images?" in such cases.
Hi Lex, Ok so I have tested the Ctrl+Shift+S and it does come up with the save RAW file option, however when I actually save it all the changes that I've applied to the photo are not saved. It saves just a copy of the original RAW file without any of the applied changes. In essence it's the same as if I just make a copy of the original photo using Windows.
Excellent tutorial. I suspect most folks overlook DPP, but you've demonstrated why you shouldn't.

I've tried right clicking it and going into the info section, shows everything except the folder location. Seems like they haven't included it unfortunately.
@@DomsMediaZone thanks for checking - thought it was just me. and thanks for the DPP vedio's - why Canon doesn't promote DPP ??
@@DomsMediaZone just came across another saving edited photo issue, and not sure what is going on.
Edited JPEG
hit save as - changed name - from upper left pull down .
Hi Jade,
It should work if you ask me however I do not know the specs of your computer.
Macintosh
OS (operating system) Mac OS X 10.8 to 10.9
Model PC with one of the above OS preinstalled
CPU Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz or higher (recommended Core i series or later)
RAM (memory) 2.0 GB or more of RAM (4.0 GB or more recommended)
Hard disk drive Installation: Min. 200 MB of available space
Operation: Min. 256 MB of available space
Display Resolution: XGA (1024 x 768) or more (1600 x 1200 or more recommended)
Colors: 16 bit color (65536 colors) or more
@@DomsMediaZone Thank you so much for your help. I gave the memory card to my classmate, and it worked fine. I still don't know what caused that.
Excellent course Thank you very much.
Great tutorial......Thanks a lot
Happy to hear that! Thanks for watching.
Very, very good. Thanks Dom
Cheers, Ted
Glad I could help and thank you for the kind comment Ted!! Appreciate it.
Once again, a very interesting tutorial. Thanks a lot! BTW, how do you find canon noise reduction for quality compared to, for example, to ACR?
Thank you for the feedback. To be honest I find that they both work pretty good and if the noise is minimal it's very difficult to notice the difference.
Could you please supply a useable link to download DPP4? Thankyou for your time.😀
Hi, I'm not sure which country you're in or if it makes a difference but here is the one I used in the UK: www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/software/digital-photo-professional.html?os=windows%2010%20(64-bit)&language=
Well explained 👏
1:04:59 you are wrong.
have you ever tryed Ctrl+S or Ctrl+Shift+S ? Lol (or Menu - File - "Save" / "Save as..." )
it's exactly "resave this RAW file" and "save this RAW file to new RAW copy of this RAW file" (respectively).
with new recipe of course
Great thankyou for explaing all that brilliant
Thank you for watching, glad it helped.
