Thnx for this super clear explanation. This is what most users want to do - simply create a separate D drive for storing all their files and data. Sure, you can dive into technical explanations of Fdisk utility, the MBR (Master Boot Record), primary partitions, extended partitions, logical partitions etc. if you need to understand how operating systems manage hard disk storage. But not everyone is a geek!

Now the rant:
I'm a Linux semi-tech selling geophysics 3D visualization software. When the pressure is on supporting or presenting at a client site or convention its usually os on someone else's system. We have software on Linux and windows systems. And I'll tell you, when the software on windows glitches it's fubar.
I feel like windows has a long arm with hand on my forehead. Just can't get to the os to do anything. Don't get me started on cmd brain damage. Windows cmd was created by a sinister psychopathic schizophrenic with a hate complex. Linux command line and tools are so much easier.
OK. I feel much better now.
