Can Jedi Have Red Lightsabers? 😳

  • We are very used to seeing Jedi have blue and green lightsabers but are they allowed to have red ones?
Cuz even though the line is drawn very clearly that Sith have red and Jedi have blue and green, what’s stopping a Jedi from owning a red lightsaber?
Well there are actually 2 very interesting explanations to this question.
The first is that a Jedi is allowed to “USE” a red lightsaber especially if they are in trouble!
We see this many times with Obi Wan using one of Ventress' sabers and Anakin taking Count Dooku’s.
But just like what Obi Wan said after using one, “Red’s not my color.”
Now of course a lightside user could take a red crystal and purify it which turns the lightsaber blade white like we see Ahsoka Tano do with an inquisitor.
But if we take a look at what happens in the legends EU, things get spicy!
Cuz we actually see Jedi like Adi Gallia, Depa Billaba, and even Luke Skywalker owning and using a red lightsaber!
Yeah! Luke Skywalker built a Shoto saber just like the one we see Ahsoka use but he just decided to be different and have the color be red to compliment his green lightsaber!

Red isn't inherently evil. The crystals themselves are tuned to the dark side. Ancient Sith used red Lignan crystals, which burned hotter and increased their dark side powers. When these crystals went extinct. The Sith found a way to make synthetic ones. This is why every Sith makes their own crystals as a right of passage. The Dark Side just turns them red. But a natural red crystal would just be red.

Not to mention purple. Also red, blue, and green makes sense being the primary colors (of light, in art it's red, blue, yellow, making even more sense for a LIGHTsaber), along with in art, certain colors are complimentary.
Complete opposites, blue with orange, purple and yellow, and yes red with green probably why red and green are christmas colors for commercializing, and while the 1st lightsaber we do see is blue from Obi Wan and Luke's saber in A New Hope, making it green while fighting red makes them stand out more.
These also are colors that when mixed make brown, because they're polar opposites. However, when used together not mixed obviously lol, makes them stick out a lot more. Certain video games utilize this too, 1st coming to mind is Castlevania, to make characters or enemies pop out, they made the backgrounds complementary colors.
I'm guessing again that is why they gave Luke a green one, especially during the dark scenes of Return of the Jedi. If blue had been used, it'd blend too much with the dark backgrounds even if clashing with Vader's red saber.

_Pigments_ generate brown when mixed (subtractive color value). IBM PC's faked it as dim orange. The "purple" generated by mixing red & blue light (additive process) isn't really purple, it's magenta (think T-Mobile). "Spectral" purple (as in "on the visible spectrum", like Windu's sabre) is generated by different frequency of light, wavelength low 400 nanometers. Less than that is ultraviolet. Blue is low 500's. Green, mid-500's. Yellow high 500's. Orange a narrow band at low 600's, Red mid 600's.

Actually, in art Red's complimentary is Cyan, Green's is Magenta and Blue's is Yellow.
That's because the "real" subtractive primaries are Cyan, Magenta and Yellow which are the colors you get from mixing RGB light.
      Red+Green: makes Yellow
      Red+Blue: makes Magenta
      and
      Green+Blue: makes Cyan

N... no?... but also yes, you're not entirely wrong, just mixed up.
I mean it depends on the shade I suppose, but base colors, red is complimentary to green, yellow to purple (or violet I suppose if we want to get technical), and orange to blue. Even if we throw in sub colors like cyan, base red is still opposite to base green, while red orange is to cyan (or other blue green shades), red violet (magenta) is to yellow green, and yellow orange is to blue violet.
Red+green does not make yellow under any circumstances lol.
Not entirely wrong on red+blue but again depends on the shades, like a lighter shade of red, pink makes a more magenta color over base violet.
Also not wrong on green+blue equaling cyan... but they're next to each other on the color wheel, they're not opposites.
I even looked up on google images to double check, and seems like most of the color wheels that do make some of these happen like red vs cyan is because they're missing a color like orange. All this is because this utilizes a different color wheel from other art forms.
It also depends on your artistic field, which is why you aren't wrong
In digital design yes utilizing a RGB wheel works, but in painting the RBY wheel is utilized. This is because RGB is based on light, as I say in the 1st paragraph, LIGHTsabers using the light spectrum pallets. In science, astronomy, chemistry, biology, etc they too utilize the light RGB wheel. That is why by extension it is used in digital design.
However when it comes to art um... can't find the right words and don't want to offend, basic art, original art? historical art, your painting, drawing, markers, crayons, portraits, landscapes etc the RBY color wheel is utilized. To which I am right, red being opposite to green etc, and the mixing of said colors producing browns as I mentioned prior.
It's a difference of science colors vs... uggh trying not to denote or sound snobby, because that too is an art form, it's just different. It's science colors vs artsy colors. I even recall in biology class testing which shade of color a plant may grow under... dear god that was a long time ago. Then in college learning about astronomy while also taking art classes. It's different mediums, but neither are inherently wrong. Heck maybe that is why they made Obi Wan's lightsaber blue, because cyan in the light spectrum color wheel is opposite to red, and while called blue, blue lightsabers have always been a brighter shade of blue. Then they go and introduce Mace Windu with a purple lightsaber so they switched gears, now there's yellow, orange, light sabers of every color across the rainbow.
Hopefully that helps and doesn't confuse you more lol. Admittedly I was a bit confused at 1st because it's been a while since I thought about the light spectrum despite mentioning it in my base comment.

@@Blaze4ification RYB is the incorrect color model for art/subtractive color mixing and was created at a time when we had a very limited understanding of color. the only reason it hasn't been tossed out is because RYB has been taught for centuries and humanity is stubborn and resistant to being challenged. See also the still ongoing debate about if T-Rex had feathers or not.
And mixing Red and Green LIGHT makes Yellow which is why it's a subtractive primary. Likewise mixing Red and Blue light creates Magenta * in other words Magenta is the "real" purple * and Green and Blue makes Cyan the additive secondaries.
And since subtractive/pigment mixing is based on reflecting colored light off a surface rather than adding more colored light like in additive mixing the primaries are reversed with Cyan, Magenta and Yellow becoming the primaries while Red, Green and Blue become the secondaries.
Mixing Magenta and Yellow pigments will make Red hence why Red isn't a subtractive primary while it is an additive(light) one. Likewise mixing Cyan with Magenta will yield Blue and mixing Cyan and Yellow will create a much more vivid Green than you get from mixing Blue * a secondary * with Yellow * a primary *.
On that same note mixing Magenta with Blue will create a much truer Violet than the muddy "Purple" you get from the "traditional" mix of Red and Blue.
In summary What the RYB model gets wrong is that Red and Blue are also secondaries with Green while "Purple" is a primary and Orange and Violet are tertiaries and the Tealish color you get from mixing Blue and Yellow is actually just an impure Green much like the "Purple" you get from Red and Blue.
So to answer your question about Orange it's complementary/opposite color is a mixture of Cyan and Blue that I've both seen called simply Cyan Blue or Sky Blue.
That said pigment primaries can be messy due to several pigments all being called the same color in paint.

Oh don't even get me started on dinosaurs lol, especially the T-Rex. To which it has been proven untrue that it had feathers, not to say Tyrannosaurs genus itself weren't capable, the Yutyrannus 100% had feathers, especially given its climate that it lived in, colder environments, vs a Tyrannosaurus Rex had no need for feathers being in humid climates. Then some scientists say only their young had feathers, but then they lost them by adulthood which I mean is possible too, again given the climate, they may have evolved to lose their feathers so they wouldn't over heat.
That is a whole other thing aside, let's ignore that this is about art. However no that isn't an archaic belief that humans are too stubborn to throw out. Go grab some markers or paint, mix them, if you mix red with green what do you get? If you mix purple and yellow what do you get? Blue orange? all= brown. They're complimentary because they are complete opposites, but when combined don't make another color. Red+Yellow=orange, blue+yellow=green, etc. Then mentioning other shades, tints, and pallets they come from mixing other colors together. Cyan is blue mixed with green, magenta is violet with red, pink is a tint of red mixed with while. Is this wrong?
It's not that either of us are incorrect per say, again it's just different fields. Art is its own medium while science is its own medium. Pink isn't on the color wheel, would you include that? Like you said there are more colors that we know of that exist now, but if you just kept adding colors then it is well endless.
Then again you mention LIGHT, again to which I agreed and is a different field, it's science vs art. I already know all that in your 3rd paragraph, you're preaching to the choire, but seriously go and buy paint and mix it and compare to a digital one. You're not wrong, yellow and blue, makes a gross asparagus green, while yellow and cyan is a pastel green, that's again though working under different fields. You mix a base blue paint it makes a vivid green too.
... no, that's not what the RBY model does, Red, blue, and yellow are primaries, while green, purple, and orange are secondaries, because they require 2 colors to make, just like in the RGB model. That's like preschool levels of art. No offense meant, it's just we're both not wrong. You say in summary too but that just seemed more confusing, missing punctuations?
It's not that neither of us are wrong necessarily, it's just different fields of professions. Like I believe you, and as I stated in my own comment I too know of the RGB models, and what they do, but that's also different. It's not wrong that when you mix a red paint with a blue paint you get purple, or mixing a red and green gives you brown, red with yellow orange, red with white pink, etc. I don't think it's stubbornness that's just how it works with a physical thing like painting or drawing pallets vs light based stuff, digital, printing pallets.
I won't deny the stubborness of the dinosaur and T-Rex debacle, scientists themselves, all of them wrong or right are stubborn lol. It's different for art though, artists aren't necessarily stubborn (not that they can't be lol), it truly is just a difference of fields. I can't think of words to describe it other than that, because again neither of us are wrong. You go on the internet to a paint thing mix stuff and it's the RGB format, mix blue and yellow it's a gross green vs cyan yellow a good green. you go into your closet, pull out some paints, mix blue and yellow you get a good green.
Hell on a digital format the RGB WATER IS A COLOR, that shouldn't count, water isn't a color, it's colorless, it reflects colors, reflection isn't a color unto itself otherwise mirrors would be a color. Both do things improper, and both do some things proper, neither is inherently wrong, it's just... difference of profession and fields. There's a reason people say art and science are polar opposites.

It wasn't until later on in Legends material that it was explained that the red color manifested only due to the use of a synthetic crystal coupled with an extremely rushed construction job. He didn't "decide" to do it just to be different and compliment his green sabre lmao
Long story short Jedi don't *construct* red blades for their personal sabres because the process requires torturing the kyber with the power of the dark side causing it to "bleed", which would be against the Jedi Code for obvious reasons. Purple or orange may manifest if the wielder has struck a balance with the ability to tap into the dark side without falling to it. Those colors aren't achieved though a bleeding process making them acceptable for Jedi use.
