I had the thought that when Buggy saw the straw hat, he immediately recognized it and went easy on Luffy. He's been planning things out since then.
I’d be willing to bet that buggy was always a monster level powerhouse but was fulfilling a destiny of being a signal of the new king of the pirates. Buggy has proven himself time and time again to be one of the most clever and resilient characters in the story. No matter the situation he is presented with buggy is able to retain or build a loyal crew. If we’re to assume that buggy was in east blue to find the greatest treasure of them all, maybe that treasure is the next pirate king. Buggy has shown 0 interest in the position but he is the king of character that would understand best that a close proximity to the pirate king would yield the best payout treasure. We’ll see though I guess.

The crazy thing to me about Mihawk - the first spotlighted time we've seen a paramecia type use their DF to evade haki-infused attacks was Katakuri. By spotlighted, I mean an instance where the feat was presented seriously (e.g. Nami has bludgeoned Luffy many times, but it was first treated as a serious feat when Garp first did it post-Enies Lobby).
I love the theory of baggy hiding his true power from everyone and doing other small things that now little by little got him the title of yonko..
I suppose if he is truly hiding something then he should reveal it now that he is the highest you can get..(pirate king is out of the option for anyone but luffy)

I kinda like the idea that Oda is exploring different types of rivals.
Smoker, Coby, Akainu, Blackbeard, Kidd, Buggy... All could be called rivals of Luffy, but each and every one of those rivalry dynamic are completely different.
And there are a lot of things like that in the story.
There could be whole hours long analysis made about how Oda is using and exploring storytelling devices and cliches.
I believe that's why One Piece takes so long, because Oda likes seeing different spins on things. Friendly rival, serious rival, serious but comedic rival, ideological rival, revenge rival...
Doflamingo, Big Mom and even Kaido have lost their "investors" from the Criminal Underworld or the Syndicates...those investors have turned to Buggy's own business organization and got rich from his clients. Add also Buggy's discovery of Captain John's hidden treasure, thanks to a map Luffy gave Buggy while they were at Impel Down!
Add his sudden fame to facing Whitebeard at Marineford and add also to his promotion to Shishibukai. Even though the Shishibukai system has been abolished, the Gorosei decided to promote him to Yonko in a desperate attempt to diminish Luffy 's own Yonko status!
The gorosei do not assign the title of yonko. Its not an official title, but a global recognition of power/influence. Big news Morgans is the one who "makes it official" if anything. The WG only assigns titles to those who work for/with them, the Emperors don't. They are separate entities entirely. Ask Ohara or GLR's Liam. 💯😁
Buggy literally clowned on the WG with his "Grand Line Fedex" business when he was made Shichibukai. He probably is extremely rich now and commands a grand fleet either similar or bigger than our Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Since probably his couriers and partners just turned pirates again when the Shichibukai got disolved
Honestly buggy is such an amazing and harmless character. From what I remember all he ever really cared about was remaining low-key and finding treasures that the fact he's considered a villain never made any sense to me since he never actually really hurt anyone or outright attacked anyone and it's usually him being attacked and having to defend himself without hurting anyone severely or at all in the process.

He's only harmless because of how inept he is and will abandon his crew to save his own skin like with the Warlord status revoked.
I think Buggy is the most Pirate like pirate in one piece. He's cunning, trickster and opportunistic. He just got the right mindset as pirate to pursue treasure, prioritized escape than fighting and keep low key so he could roam around freely. As a Captain, he will just let his crew be the flashy pirate they want as long as they bring the booty at the end of the day. Other than treasure hunting, he loves to have a feast, fun and freedom. 🤣

I always thought Buggy was much more capable than what we've seen previously. Every other surviving member of Roger's crew has been an absolute monster. Bullet, Rayleigh, Krokus, Oden, Scopper Gaban, Shanks... All absolute beasts. Buggy, in my opinion, never showed much of his actual fighting prowess but was the closest person to actually killing Luffy, before Kaido. Mihawk's Yoru, a haki I fused black blade was overpowered without Buggy seemingly using any haki at all. But, being on Roger's ship with such powerhouses whom all use haki in advanced forms tells me he was on par with Shanks. Buggy didn't want to be a Yonko, or Warlord, he was on the hunt for Captain John's treasure. But Buggy is an ultimate opportunist, taking whatever comes his was as a blessing/gift. And Shanks knows Buggy more than anyone else, literally have up going to Laugh Tale because Buggy got sick. Shanks at Marine Ford, treated Buggy as an equal and it was noticed, it then came out that he was a former member of Roger's crew. Openly turned down an offer from a Yonko. I'm calling this right now. Crocodile, Weevil, Hancock, and Mihawk joined Buggy's fleet and pushed away all the Marines. That is the part of chaos we haven't seen yet, outside of Wano.. the SSG failed miserably...
The only reason I believe Buggy has not been secretly hiding some awesome powers, is because we've heard his internal thought process many times. Internal buggy is more terrified than even external buggy.
I believe that Oda is going with the anime trope of the first main villain. Lingering around in the series, after the main character, Powers up a significant level past him. Often becoming an ally, with a love-hate relationship.

I personally think Buggy is actually powerful. Think about it, he was part of Rogers crew, he took part in fights with Rogers crews against other powerful crew, he has been a pirate since he was a kid, he has connections in the underworld. He might be a son of a powerful yet unknown one piece character etc etc. He might hiding something to us all along. I'm ok buggy being a yonkou!
He might not have confidence. We know with hindsight how powerful those other pirates are but when he was on Rogers crew it might have just been the norm.
He is powerful. Oda stated that he would be Shanks' equal if he wasn't to lazy to train and I don't think that training alone would get someone to be as powerful as a Yonko.

1:33 I think we are forgetting that buggy has been out of his element for years, he has not fought or trained (well truly) for years. Its like a major veteran who is in a room sitting for 20 years it would be hard to be good in that moment, sometimes you need to practice again and regain confidence to be able to be good.
I think he has gained some strength when he was in impel down, and the timeskip also allows for him to gain power. I think his current strength could be at the very most, the minimum one needs to be considered a warlord

Since you referred to Buggy and Usopp as the Trickster type, there have been other characters who have that same sort of position. Such as Foxy, Caesar and probably Caribou and Miss Bakin.

I think there's one factor that might be overlooked. While Buggy IS influential, Cunning, Charismatic and has DF power with potential, He also tries to stay out of action. Of course he inevitably ends up in the middle of it, like at marineford, impel down etc and that's where his traits shine. Making his 'Great Captain Buggy' persona, that gets to people. But because of his cunning, he tries to stay out of it. When most of the world focuses on big shots, like Luffy, Kaido, Big Mom etc, no one will notice Buggy Delivery, or rather no one takes him seriously as a threat. Which allows him to gain his influence and Wealth more easily. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what got him the Yonko status. he just used the commotion in the world to quietly climb up the ranks.
aight so buggy might have astronomical powers literally. imagine his body chopped into pieces, coated all with advanced armament and advanced conquerors, continuously spinning and revolting like a planetary system, hurling towards you like a mad tornado, add an advanced observation and it will be a guaranteed hit each body part
with his current outfit, that big huge cloak thing, I think that could be something he does, you know, since no one can see his body parts, he might sneak some out and attack from behind or something

Either one suggests incredible strength either by luck or hard work. I have to assume that he at least learned a little about how to use haki since he was on Rogers crew

Buggy awakening is molecular spliting. He can split enemies in a molecular level, which will ignore how strong the enemy is. Hence, this will make him an incredibly powerful pirate.
haki is said to give you a resistance to wierd devil fruit powers like that, even if the awakening allowed you to split others, strong enough haki would prevent it to some degree, same as law's fruit.

Watching the early episodes of One Piece again is pretty surreal, not gonna lie, because of just how far Luffy has come. I can't say I expected Buggy to come this far either, when I was a kid and watching those episodes. Proud of that clown
I wonder if Buggy somehow managed to recruit Edward weevil( and his mom) to the crew, with the loss of the giants Buggy would need a major powerhouse like Edward on his side and I could see him working out a deal with Edward's mom, Bugg's delivery had likely made him a lot of money which he could use to pay them. I think buggy ironically represents the human aspect of one piece. You can have the greatest natural ability in the world but your put against a giant dragon, 3 sword welding badass, or the sun God…. You look pretty insignificant.

The more i think about Buggy the more i tend to theories where he might be hidding his power from the beginning. There is no way when you see who was part of Roger crew had become you think Buggy is weak. He might be the weakest among former roger's pirates but when you think about Roger, Rayleigh, Shanks, Oden the term weak is the last to come to mind.
He is litteraly like usopp, probably the most normal among his crew but he is still part of the crew of the pirate king that still mean something.
During Oden flashback we saw Roger talking to Shanks before he leave what if Roger or most likely Shanks repeat his words, maybe they decide to reach raftel together when it's the right time or compete.
A old theory around Buggy is that he might be the baby that roger mentioned at one point, could he be Xebec son? or at least a D?

I believe that Buggy would have beaten Luffy if he wasn't getting distracted every 5 seconds. He allowed Nami to tie up his limbs and then became a head with two hands and feet. He lost because of stupid mistakes. He also lost by ring out and took a lot of punishment but wasn't visibly injured at the end. He wasn't unconscious. He has taken a lot of punishment throughout the series and hasn't really pushed himself imo. I think if he tried he could become very powerful. He could awaken his devil fruit and maybe even train his haki. It remains to be seen if he could actually live up to his current title though.

It will be interesting that Buggy was hiding his true power. Do you feel clumsy with this character? Well, if this character is supposed to be comedy character why he is made look like important character? The first appereance on east blue and the first pirate that make Luffy serious. His bounty 15 Million Berry. He fought Luffy, then he lose, he revenged, but he lost again, then he chased Luffy, but he was caught by marine, then appeared again in impel down and one of important arc marineford, then became a warlord and now he become an emperor. Seems clumsy to me. If he is supposed to be comedy character, why Oda showed him is like he is one of important character? Even, he has backstory that I think he is not supposed to be comedy character only. Sekke and Buggy are same actually, they are one of luckiest character in animanga. But, Buggy seems is not. Shanks is really strong but why Buggy is not? They are in Roger pirates on same age, and of course have same experience. But, why Shanks only is strong? Maybe, he can become one of jokes character that become serious character. I know, usually the character is like Buggy is supposed to be comedy character only until final. But we don't know yet
There are going to be 2 crews who will explore the world, which means 2 Pirate Kings, you know who they are. The final enemy is not BlackBeard, it Buggy.
I feel like Luffy's character is a mix of Buggy and Shanks. It's kinda funny but I think it would be awesome if Buggy was top 10 in the story by the end. Not just because of influence and situational accolades/accomplishments, but actually top 10 based on strength and skill along with his influence. I love the fact that One piece has so many mysteries that when answered its never what's expected. Maybe in the End Buggy will be on top some how after he joins Strawhat against Blackbeard and/or the World government( I hope) or maybe he'll just be out of it and reap massive benefits from the Strawhats accomplishments
my personal head canon is that the chop-chop fruit is similar to gum gum fruit, having a fake or miss-interpreted power, I believe he only thought it was the chop-chop fruit because that's how he sall the powers, like the gum gum fruit, Luffy thought it was the gum gum fruit so used it as such, the chop chop fruit probably isn't as big as being a actual god fruit, but probably a special paramecia like the dough dough fruit

I truly believe buggy has Conqueror haki potential. He has kingly ambition, he refuses to be underneath Shanks(even when Shanks invited him to his crew).
I’d suggest one of Buggy’s biggest character arks for the forthcoming arks will be finally choosing the safety of his crew over betrayal and false riches.
With the future world war throwing the government, pirates, revolutionary’s and innocent people into chaos, Buggy will have to make decisions for himself and those around him. We’ve already seen at his warlord level that he uses mercenaries to pick up the demand left by Domflamingo. I can’t say for certain how large his crew will be but hear me out: Buggy, being one of the only warlords (we know so far) to have survived the governments abolishment will have certainly made his own inner circle of crew stick by his side (he can’t be all on his own as a warlord). Therefore Buggy and his crew have to work together at a Yonko level. Like so the his alliance with white beard, Buggy might end up teaming up with luffy or a greater pirate alliance against the world nobles or their government agents.

My theory is that Buggy is a Marine puppet ever since he "became" one of the Shichibukais. And even within the Buggy Pirates only the higher ups know the truth. Known to serve on Roger's ship with Shanks and seen escaping Impel Down with Luffy. Fame-wise Buggy is definitely above other, now abolished, Shichibukais. There's probably loads of strong Marine fighters within Buggy's crew waiting to take down any other pirate challengers especially the Super Novas. Buggy himself is probably whipped into shape by the Marine, learning all the basic Haki and techniques. With Haki and his devil fruit complementing each other, Buggy's strength is probably at the level of a real Shichibukai right now.
