Is this because they attend an élite university? Or because they possess above average intelligence? Or both?
Ignorance has few benefits except to the purveyors of the tabloid newspapers which exploit it.
Oxford is a fine university. Along with Cambridge, the LSE, Imperial and Durham it's one of the few, in England, worth attending. Oxford is almost certainly the best of them. I say 'almost' only because Cambridge (shudder)runs it close.
Don't let envy cloud your judgement, dear boy.

@@robertcottam8824 I was educated at UCL long before the emergence of 'wokism', when degrees were worth a lot more than they are today. Your one sentence second paragraph states: "Ignorance has few benefits except to the purveyors of the tabloid newspapers which exploit it", impliedly suggesting that the 'woke' agenda is some form of enlightenment. My original comment was based on the supposition that these students reflect the bias of the institution within which they're being educated (brainwashed).

I agree with you that degrees have declined in value as the number of universities - many of them nothing of the kind - has increased. But, nevertheless, the élite institutions, such as UCL, remain so.
The principles which underlie so-called 'wokeism' and 'identity politics' precede both both you and me - unless you're very old. 'Phenomenology', for instance, entered the schools of both Philosophy and Mathematics in the late '60s /early '70s.
Unfortunately, the activities of a few hotheads who simply or deliberately misunderstand the noble aims of inclusion and social equality have brought discredit with them. But the concept of 'uniqueness'; a cohort of one, remains. And it's been there for a long time in the writings of Camus, Sartre, Hugo, Byron... No one describes them as 'deviant' anymore - although they were all thought so, once.
Similarly, the suffragettes were once thought as dangerous, deranged or both. Only the boneheaded would think that now. In time, radical ideas often become mainstream.
More broadly, I don't have any problem with folk 'identfying' in any way they see fit. It's not my business. Neither do I have a problem in accepting that the lives of those possessing more melanin in their skin matter just as much as mine. What, then, is actually wrong with the ideas of 'woke' folk - apart from the shenanigans of relatively few dingbats?
The second paragraph of my first response, although short is discrete.
      Best wishes.

The opinions of real people differ vastly than the internet would lead us to believe. But most people dont want to be involved in the drama and stay quiet so the internet mob seizes control and believes itself to be the common opinion. Then they trick or threaten people/organizations into believing the same. Truth is most people arent inclined to engage in the drama and nobody asks them en masse what they believe and want, so the minority take the reigns.

@@martinneill5396 I can see why it is difficult for you to be blinkered given you’re probably a Conservative, but I’m afraid you’re not telling the whole truth. One of the key strategists in the UK working on behalf of the Tories is a man called Ed Barker. Like other right-wing strategists, Barker is leading the Conservatives into a new culture war. One of the key ideas they are trying to push is that there is such a thing as ‘cancel culture’.
In 2018, the BBC’s Reality Check team sent Freedom of Information requests to every university in the country asking for lists of books that had been banned, speakers cancelled and courses changed as a result of offence caused.
Out of 120 universities that responded, no book had been removed from any library since 2010 - though Holocaust denier David Irving had the indignity of his being moved out of the ‘history’ section in two. Only four courses had been changed - in one case, to remove a joke photo of a scrotum. And there were only six occasions on which universities had cancelled speakers as a result of complaints.
There’s no such thing as cancel culture; it is a made up strawman by right wing strategists and politicians to use to curry favour with their voters because they know how the bigoted English don’t like equality. It’s better than dealing with actual policies that can affect people’s lives; why not just pretend you’re at war with woke…you’re part of the problem unfortunately, you’ve been sidetracked by it, instead of focusing on what policies from the political parties could actual help Britain. The Tories have none, so they make up this shite, and you all lap it up…

It would be the cultural changes happening and the schools.
I loved school and had no problems with it until the fourth grade. Loved math. But in fourth grade they introduced us to new math. I hated it after that.
I had a teacher conference for my son one year. She set in front of me a paper with a sentence on it that was so ridiculous and told me he could not form a sentence like this. I said what kind of a sentence is this? It doesn't make sense. We don't speak like this.
She looked at me with a strange look and said it was a sentence formed with key words emphasized for global communication.

Social media can foment addiction (the constant scrolling and stimulation), it promotes polarisation of views, also promotes constant comparison with others and oversharing / lack of boundaries. I have to say my life really changed when I stopped listening to 'the crowd' and stopped using Facebook, Instagram as I felt it was making me compare myself and waste my time focusing on superficial things instead of exploring and developing my own potential which is much more exciting and wholesome!

They are also categorically mis informed ignorant political tools without a single sign of a legitimate education beyond the prescriptions of the propaganda of their cult. It is manifest in literally all they say think and do. And there is no refuting it. The causes they fight for are cartoon third rate stereotypical phantoms of their programmed imaginations. They aren’t actually based in fact, and exist nearly entirely in the realm of the old grievances of marxist ideology, as critical theory as put forth in its inception with the frankfurt institute is entirely based on it, as a rehashing of class warfare doctrines. And this is why the class oppressor/oppressed narrative is ubiquitous throughout. In fact so is feminism. Its why they produced intersectionality openly as a new take on marxism for their cause. This is standard material in sociology courses. As they apply class warfare doctrines now featuring race and gender, they attempt to entirely destroy the designated oppressor class, which by no coincidence is a race, an ethnicity, a gender, a people, and their cultures, history, religion. And do so with no other villian in mind, despite that all cultures on this planet, including themselves, have proven distinctly worse in literally all categories historically and presently. The space they manipulate the public in is within their politeness and mental conditioning to insist otherwise despite obvious reality to avoid offense. This too, is religion. Political correctness was invented by mao zedong for this exact purpose. Period

A few months ago, I spoke to a privately educated university student protesting about how women are oppressed in British society whilst I was walking through Manchester City Centre. She was young, probably about 20 years old, she was also extremely well spoken and what I would call a posh hipster. Dont get me wrong, I have adopted some hipster fashion myself, but I digress. Anyway, she started arguing with me about how herself as a women had a harder time and how she was oppressed by men in British society. But 2 things stuck out like a sore thumb for me with her as an individual, she went on to tell me she was from a private school in the shires down south and was studying History of Art at uni, she was also a very attractive women who probably wouldnt have dated me in a million years, despite the fact I am not a bad looking guy, I just happen to have grown up on an inner city council estate in Manchester, not far from Manchester University, and here was a woman at only 20 years old, that already had more status, cultural capital, economic capital and the ability to date pretty much any man in the City, and who most definitely had more access to what the city had to offer than a man, white, black or asian, that grew up in the council estates of Moss Side, Hulme, Ardwick and Gorton, which are within 2 miles of the University of Manchester, where many of these posh upper middle class women from private schools down south make their own. Are they sipping cappuccinos and eating avocado on toast with normal working class Mancunians, I dont think so! She was blind to the privilege she had over the vast majority of men, and other women for that matter.

Really interesting speech. Here in the U.S., where the woke "mob" seems particularly prevalent, it's worth mentioning that most people you meet on the street wouldn't be able to tell you what woke actually means, rather just express their distaste for it and their association of it with "the left" or "liberalism." The points in this speech were all really pretty good, but one of the biggest takeaways for me is the categorization and identification of woke itself, and explaining why it's so harmful despite the underlying intent. That's no small thing, because the scope of hate and blame-mongering within woke is fairly vast at this point.
Educators and students censoring themselves should be a warning bell, but I think most are ignoring it, which is possibly the absolute worst thing we could do. Ignoring the situation enables those who identify as woke to go further, to do more to harm, censor and cancel those who would dare speak against them. And as correctly mentioned in this speech, if one dares to attempt to engage with a woke individual in some sort of intelligent discourse about the topic, the effort will typically be met with vitriol and name calling, essentially a tantrum where screaming obscenities will surely make the logical person just walk away and thus allowing the woke individual to "win."
Which begs the question: If there's no real logical argument fueling woke, but rather some sort of quest for victim-hood, why are we allowing it to run rampant and cause so much harm?

    • @northshorepx
      @northshorepx ปีที่แล้ว

You make interesting points. The way I see it, is that both sides appear polarised. You have quasi facism masquerading as extreme conservatism, and quasi fascism masquerading as what people call extreme woke culture. The common thing about both is their inability engage in dialogue and debate in good faith. You can see the use of force, shouting down other opinions, and engaging in "canceling", censoring the public debate, censoring books from the extreme sides to this debate. I believe that what's happening here what we saw in the early 20th century with the democratisation of some new media (then is was easier printing of newsletters/papers and radio, now it's social media over the internet) leading to the voices of the extremes being magnified way above the voices of the calm majority on both sides of the debate.
As Toby said rightly here, and I've never been a fan f his, is there are laudable aims in many of the movement that are attempting to redress imbalances in society, but the extremes are using these as battlegrounds, and not as places where we can work together to fix issues.

I see these people as people pursuing progressive ends, but not by progressive means and the latter is what I find objectionable. It's one thing to hold certain views, but how we engage with the rest of society is crucial, especially those we don't immediately see eye to eye with, which is where a lot of people fall short of making meaningful change.

The speaker missed a major problem with "woke culture" in that he did not address the collectivist underpinnings of the movement. The acolytes of wokeness are not interested in promoting individual liberty or the quality of life for people in general, but instead based on specific groups within the general population. In order for such a thing to happen they focus on raising the groups they judge to be "underprivileged" and actively work to pull down the groups they see as "privileged. This, by necessity leads to the erasure of the individual members quality of character, and inexorably results in situations where the bad behavior of certain "underprivileged" individuals is excused and ultimately condoned, while any good behavior by a "privileged" individual is written off as a fluke or an attempt to avoid responsibility for their groups "crimes." It is therefore not only the means that are abhorrent to all thinking people, but so too the end in itself.

For the Woke, persuasion's not the point. They don't think it's actually possible. They think they, and anyone speaking to them, is primarily a product of social conditioning, not primarily a free, deciding agent. And conversation is thus a power-conflict between antagonistic forces, not an attempt to woo a potential decider to one's view. There is no fair player, and no potential friend in one's interlocutor. There is only a power-seeker. The goal in seeming-conversation, then, is to assert one's own power vigorously enough to conquer the power the opposition is trying to use...but truth, reason and conversation are mere seemings in this game: the Nietzschean, Foucaultean use of power is the deep truth of everything that's going on, they believe. Naturally, they must bully adversaries, rather than converse with respected others.

      What’s happened?
On Thursday 28 July, NHS England announced that the current sole provider of gender identity health services for children and young people in England, NHS Tavistock and Portman’s Gender Identity Development Service (known by many simply as the Tavistock or GIDS), will be replaced in Spring 2023 by two regional centres - one in London, and another in the North West.
This news follows recommendations from Dr. Cass’ independent review of these services, which recognised - as we have for decades - that the current GIDS service is not up to scratch to cope with growing demand, and there is a need for better all-round care.
Once these two “Early Adopter” centres are up and running, the plan is for NHS England to expand the sites across the country, suggesting up to eight in total.
