Another great post, Courtney! Thank you. We bought a home in Stallion Springs in July, and your overview and descriptions are right on. If you need nightlife, or tons of shopping and things for young people to do, Tehachapi may not be for you (they did just open a brand new bowling alley!). But if you want a slower pace, very down to earth and friendly people, a true rural set of communities with dark skies, no to few streetlights, absolute quiet (zero traffic noise), beautiful rolling hills, oak trees, farms and ranches, beautiful breezy skies…the area is a true hidden gem. Brute Lake is a drinking water and fire fighting source, and you can use boats with small trolling motors. Reported to have huge trout. At Horsethief Lake, on my first fishing trip ($30/year for residents only), I caught 3 nice bass in one hour! Usually only 1-2 people there ( or nobody). Courtney mentioned some great restaurants, and I would include P Dubs in Stallion; a great true local bar and grill. In our lives, we are programmed to “do” and “produce”- Tehachapi is great if you want to slow down and focus on BEING. I love listening to the wind, the birds, and just the dead air of silence. You sleep better there. Life is better there… Thank you, Courtney. Hope to see you around town someday, neighbor!
Downtown Tehachapi to those outlets is an hour drive, and even longer of a drive from Bear Valley or Stallion Springs. It’s not too close, but definitely close enough for a day trip.
Most properties we have been looking at via various online sites show that they are in an “extreme fire risk” location. Is it difficult or expensive to get fire insurance?
It has become more challenging but not impossible. I know a couple of great insurance agents who I can recommend and often help my clients get homeowners insurance in Tehachapi.
Considering moving to the area and your videos are a big help:) We live in a smaller town now, so I don’t think it would be too much of a shock for us. Curious about how safe the towns are, specifically Golden Hills area. Thanks so much!
Realtors are not allowed to talk about safety, due to fair housing laws. But, you can definitely look up crime information and compare to other areas of CA.
