I love to see this video from you! Can't wait for the other decades. I like 80% of all songs here, even some which I might not have considered for my top 40. Also I especially appreciate the inclusion of 4 Greek entries. We really sent some gems during the 90s which were sadly overlooked (except for 1992-3).
Thanks so much! I'll have a revisit of the 2000's and hopefully, will be able to make a similar video for it. And, who knows, maybe I'll even get to the 80's! Glad you liked most of the songs! Actually, in the decade, there were only a few I properly didn't like. Most of it was enjoyable. The live orchestra helped for a lot. I liked the approach that Greece took in the 90's where they really went for it and either got it really right, or badly wrong.
@@kaleproject3495 Thank you for replying. I also like that you have included all 4 Irish winners from the 90s. I agree that the orchestra (and live music in general) feels great to listen to, so much in fact that I secretly wish it would return to Eurovision (which is unrealistic tbh). I will be putting my full rankings up on my spreadsheet this week so you can check out any individual song there....but most of the ones you've listed were ranked solidly between 6.0-7.5 and just weren't strong enough for the list. Bandido was probably the closest to making it. It would probably be in the 50-60 range if I extended the list further. Insieme: 1992 wasn't far off either. I had it rated as a 7.5 and the songs in my top 40 were 8.0+. The ones that didn't do so well at all were Hungary '94, Sweden '96 and UK '97. All scored under a 6.0. Love Shine A Light is probably my lowest ranked winner of the 90's. It's just so bland.
@@kaleproject3495 You might be the first fan that I see complain about 'Love Shine A Light'. Personally it is one of my all time favourite ESC winners.
@@dimidrugg9592 Definitely not going to have a problem with people liking it! I'd still like to know what people find good about it. It doesn't work on any level for me personally.
Yeah, it's actually unusual for me to like winners as much as I do here. But, for some reason, the 90's were much better at getting the actual deserving songs as winners.
I was looking forward to this, and I am not disappointed! Seriously, apart from one polarizing song (which I still admit, has its charms), I either like or love the songs on this list. Most of them are either on my playlist, or close by, or mid-list at lowest. Some of them are among my alltime favorites too! ❤❤❤
Really glad! I knew we were going to be on pretty safe ground with most of them and, those I didn't, happy that you're onboard with. I would definitely say the top two are all-timers for me, especially for the time.
As someone that hasn't seen this decade, I was most surprised by the fact that Malta actually sent a 9/10 entry Also both the intro and outro songs piqued my interest, what are they?
It might just be a 9/10 entry for me though! I haven't seen a lot of love for it elsewhere. But it definitely gives me that feeling you'd get from a good 90's Luther Vandross style duet. I like it a lot. As for my new intro/outro music, they're both tracks from the recent Sara Jo (Beovizija 2022) album. She's got some really good ones on there. :3
Quite surprised not to see "Love Shine a Light" here, because it's an amazing entry and the 2nd best winner of 90s for me after 1995. I don't know most of your picks, but gonna check to some of them, like "Eloise", "Dinle", "Pia Prosefhi", or "Love City Groove"!
I'm glad you're checking out some of my picks! Dinle is a particularly special one so I hope you enjoy it in its entirety. LSAL is one of my least favourite Eurovision winners. It's just not for me lol.
Imo the 90s isn't one the best esc decades, but when they're good they're amazing especially since it's the decade we got some of the most experimental entries
Funnily enough, I actually haven't found too many of the entries to be *that* experimental. France and Spain were doing some different things and maybe the UK were at least trying to be current with some of their choices but otherwise, I think a lot of countries settled into styles that were classic and that they knew worked. Having said that, I do like the classics and that's reflected in most of the songs I've got rated highly here.
My top 3: 3. France 1991 2. Ireland 1993 1. Norway 1995 Norway 95 & Ireland 93 are imo THE best winner of Eurovision ! ❤ I'm so happy that Ireland 1993 is your favourite
Excellent top two. France 1991 is a bit of a problem for me as I'm really not seeing its positives at the moment and it's coming across as very overrated. I'd love to hear what you really like about it!
@kaleproject3495 First of all, France 1991 might be one of my favourite performances with Ireland 1993 in the 90s, and as a french I grew up with this song so I was similar to it. There is such a classy yet effortless charisma of her ! And her voice is so captivating, she should have won imo
@@vincentesc It's a completely different matter when you grow up with the songs so I can understand how it takes on that presence for you. Agree that it's classy and effortless. It would still be a low-impact winner for me...and I do prefer the Swedish entry more than other Swedish winners for sure.
I really like the 90's actually. So many unique entries. May I ask what your opinion on some of my personal 90's favourites that didn't appear in this video. Israel 1991 Hungary 1994 Portugal 1996 Poland 1995/1997 The Netherlands 1998 Lithuania 1999 My absolute favourite 90's entry has to be Italy 1992 though. Such class.
I will be putting my ratings on the spreadsheet for the 90's next week...so you can check out all of these. Lithuania 1999 I know I didn't rate highly but I believe it's Edward's no.1, so I'll let him say all the good things about that one. Portugal 96 out of the ones you listed probably did best with me.
Could you imagine? It's one of the best vocal performances ever in Eurovision and a top-class piece of songwriting that could've ended up in the hands of a Mariah or a Whitney and it wouldn't have been out of place at all.
Hi! It was really interesting to see what you think of the 90's decade as I could expect some interesting picks - and I'm not disappointed :D For some strange reason I opted to comment year by year :) 1990 - agree that it isn't the most exciting year in the decade (though not the worst in my opinion), but my pick would be Spain or Belgium, as for Rita - she's more of an actress than a singer, I daresay. 1991 - Honestly, I'm on Amina's side between the two winners :) Greece and Portugal would both be in my top-3 (together with Spain, I think), Italy would be somewhere close. As for Malta - they had an absolutely dreadful run of songs in 1990s except for 'Could It Be' which might not be among my big favourites but is somewhere close to my top 10 1992 - In my opinion, this was the worst year with three highlights, of which you've mentioned two - Cyprus and Italy. Spain is kinda boring while Ireland's victory has always been a complete mystery to me (and even to her I guess: there should be a reason why she's asking 'Why me?!' :D ) 1993 - I've got some friends who honestly believe that Fazla has the best song _ever_ sung in Eurovision - but I don't really get it tbh. Sweden, Switzerland, France and Portugal would all be in my top 10 with Switzerland being my second (or third maybe). Not a fan of both Kaiti and Niamh though 'In Your Eyes' is way better than the previous Irish victory. 1994 - Not the brightest year again, all of your picks would be in my Top 10 of the year, I think, with Evridiki being maybe even my winner. 1995 - the year I like the most from the decade, I think, however, my favourites aren't very popular among the community (except for Norway). I do like the French, the Spanish and the Greek song, but I wouldn't put them too high on my list, Darja had a better song four years later and the UK isn't my cup of tea, to say the least :) 1996 - We disagree here completely :D maybe I'd only put Ireland somewhere near my Top 5. Hungary surely should've made it through, but I'm not sure I'd even put it to the left side of the scoreboard, as for Spain and Poland - they both had nice ideas behind the songs but the way they were actually put together and presented... ahem :/ 1997 - Yay for Horepse! Was really underrated in the contest. Not a fan of Dinle - I believe her previous year's effort is much more interesting than this one. France is cute but... not too special. 1998 - UK was a real hit so it deserved being here. Don't like the other two, frankly speaking - I think 'Sin rencor' was much better than Mikel's song and I don't think I've liked any of Turkey's ballads. 1999 - To be honest, you're the first person I've ever seen to enjoy that year's Polish entry :) Croatia is good but in my opinion a bit too overhyped in the community, while Iceland would surely be a much more decent winner than what we really had to get.
I agree with a lot of those (except your winner 😂). I also have a lot of sympathy for France 1991, 1992, Poland 1995 (I find this one quite awesome and unique) and Turkey 1996
I'll go to bat strongly for "In Your Eyes" so be warned! XD France 91, I get asked about a lot. The song is just too uneventful for it to really stay with me. I don't understand its placement in the contest. Definitely overrated. It's a nice listen though. I still gave it a 6.5. France '92 is actually in my top ten for that year! Again, it probably lacks a little impact but really liked what they were going for. I gave it a 7.0. I'm also getting asked a lot about Poland '95 and I can understand why people might think I would like it. And, the idea of it is fantastic. But, that vocal performance just kills the enjoyment of it. Respect what they were trying to do, but the execution was a no. Turkey '96 goes under the radar a bit. Guess with '96 being a strong year and there being better examples of that kind of song. I still gave it a 6.5 and put it just outside my top ten.

@@silencestation557 I'll go so far and to say if it isn't my favourite Swedish entry, it might be second. When it comes to Swedish entries that actually have a bit of feeling to them, it's that or "Hold Me Closer" and then a huge drop off for me.
@@kaleproject3495 Well, yeah, Hold Me Closer isn't my thing but besides Eloise, I have a really soft spot also for En dag (1989) and Se på mig (1995) and that's pretty much it I think.

Well, I included Hungary '96, so you can definitely include Germany. I have it rated as a 6.5 and ranked it quite well within the year. It's ahead of its time for sure. The two Israel choices in your top ten are generally well-liked. I have them both rated as 7.0+ songs so they worked for me, too. The two French entries, I didn't rate highly though and I'm not really understanding why they did so well at the contests they competed in...but that might just be me.
@@Agju I think Amina seems the more talented vocalist of the two but, I don't think anything actually happens in her song. Still amazes me that it got the result that it did. Let's just say, it's definitely "subtle". I mean, I gave it a 6.5, which is the same rating that I give the likes of "Guilty Pleasure" (Croatia 2022) that I actually like, so there is still respect there, certainly. But, it's still the result that gets me. Joelle competed in a much weaker year so I guess that helps, but I gave the song a 5.5.

28. I like it
27. Also so beautiful
26. Quite good, but her weakest attempt
25. This is Fantastic !
24. Love it so much
Love that for the most part you got along well with my top twenty!
I like a lot of your choices, too. As much as you like Sweden 93 as much as Groot does, I also see that you like Denmark 93 almost as much as he does, too! You'll be glad to know that I did rate Cyprus '97 highly in its year, even if it didn't make my top 40 for this list. In fact, I had Cyprus 94-97 all rated above a 7.0 on my scale!
Eloise is easily one of my favourite songs from 90s and the most favourite from Sweden ever.
@@silencestation557 Se På Mig didn't do it for me, but yes, would definitely agree that it was Sweden making more of an effort to write something that actually meant something. As such, it's a good try for sure.
My favorites from this decade have to be Spain 1990, Israel 1991, Bosnia 1993, Croatia 1993, Norway 1995, Turkey 1996, Turkey 1997, Cyprus 1997, UK 1998, Portugal 1998, Israel 1998, Israel 1999, Turkey 1999, and Croatia 1999.
Your choices, on the whole, are a bit more upbeat than mine...but yes, you've got some great ones in there for sure. Croatia '93 is one I really don't get along with though.
Love Shine a Light is not in your top 40!? 💀
I actually really don't like it. It might be my least favourite winner of the 90's! 😂
i don't have enough of these songs memorized to come up with a definitive list right now but a look through my current rankings gives me these songs that i DEF remember (not the ONLY songs i remember from the decade, just the ones i remember and would rank high):

If we're including the songs from 1996 that DIDN'T make the contest, "Planet of Blue" would be in my top 5, below Peppino
(And if we're doing least favorites, i will gladly sacrifice Guildo Horn lol)
Well, I included Hungary '96, so you can definitely include Germany. I have it rated as a 6.5 and ranked it quite well within the year. It's ahead of its time for sure.
The two Israel choices in your top ten are generally well-liked. I have them both rated as 7.0+ songs so they worked for me, too. The two French entries, I didn't rate highly though and I'm not really understanding why they did so well at the contests they competed in...but that might just be me.
@@kaleproject3495 Joelle is fabulous and Amina has a song that flows so nicely, plus she can do such interesting things with her voice
@@kaleproject3495 Amina's song is like a warm hug and i had never heard anyone sing like that before; i imagine other people haven't either. Its something that would get your attention.
I'm notgoing to claim Joelle was doing something game-changing but the entire fierce package of the performance hooked me.
And the worst ones
There's a couple in there that could definitely be considered questionable, yes. XD
