Can Wool Save Peatlands?

- Peatlands are among the most carbon-rich wetland ecosystems on earth. When damaged or degraded, they release all that carbon back out into the environment. And in a warming planet, that's the last thing we need.
At the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales, they've been using imported coconut husk to create portable "dams" across erosion-prone areas to slow runoff and keep soil in place.
But coconuts aren't native to Wales, are they. I wonder what IS?
Hmmmm.....

🤣😂 baaaa, great educational short!
Thank you!
“Wherever there are peatlands in peril….” Clever! 😂. I hope the experiment goes well!
Me too!
Wool helping peat! Yay Wool!
Indeed!
Thanks, Clara! I've got Fen, Bog & Swamp by Annie Proulx on my shelf to read soon.
Oooh what a title!
Oregon State University's Agronomy Dept have published some great papers on how waste wool is vastly superior to peat as a soil amendment with the added benefit of being a fantastic ultra-slow nitrogen releasing fertilizer.
I use not only the waste water from cold scouring (fermented-suint-method) -- a "hot" fertilizer (too highly concentrated fertilizer, needs to be used sparingly -- sprinkled & spread out and applied during seasons where there's occasional rain, to avoid burning plant roots) but also all my waste wool from carding/combing - nepps, mats, second cuts, weak wool with scurf, breaks, etc I use to mix with my soil every time I repot, transplant, start seeds/cuttings, etc.
I also use washed animal fiber & animal fiber rag remnants too weak for using as patches or quilt scraps to grow my bean/flax/broccoli sprouts for salads & sandwiches, they're AWESOME!
Absolutely! The University of Vermont has also been conducting a wool pellets project with more promising data as well: th-cam.com/video/uUxjhqyFess/w-d-xo.html&embeds_referring_euri=http%3A%2F%2Fmonpellets.com%2F&feature=emb_imp_woyt
Another win for wool! I wonder if adding wool to sandbags could help people who live in hurricane areas...just a thought....
I do know there are also some experiments using wool to help with cleanup of oil spills...
