Welcome! I’m Clara Parkes, author of Vanishing Fleece: Adventures in American Wool. The Wool Channel is my member-supported publication and community dedicated to giving wool a voice in the world.
I’ve been a resident yarn expert on PBS, I’ve explained wool on NPR, and my book Knitlandia: A Knitter Sees the World spent a month on The New York Times bestseller list in travel, much to the consternation of Bill Bryson.
The fibers we wear have a huge impact not only on our bodies but also our soil, waterways, farmland, and communities. It's time to step away from the plastic and back toward natural fibers-especially wool.
If you enjoy these videos and want to support this work, head over to The Wool Channel and join the Foundation Flock.

Inside Lainorama, Paris's brand new celebration of all things wool
Lainorama is a brand new festival dedicated to all things wool. It's the brainchild of a group called Le Paris Tricoté, and the inaugural event took place in May 2024. It was very much a love letter to wool in all forms, but especially in yarn. Among the small but impeccably curated selection of vendors, there were natural and acid hand-dyers, sheep and goat farmers, weavers, spinners, embroiders, sock-makers, and even an artisan beret maker.
In case you couldn't make it, let me take you inside and show you around.

Can Wool Protect Us from the Sun?
มุมมอง 1.1K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Short answer: Yes! But how much protection do we really need-and how does wool stack up against other textile fibers? If you'd like to dig deeper, check out the 2001 study cited in the video: Protection against ultraviolet radiation by commercial summer clothing: need for standardised testing and labelling: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC59842/ 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 Join The Wool Chan...
Can Wool Help Your Garden?
มุมมอง 9996 หลายเดือนก่อน
Yes! You've seen wood pellets for stoves and feed pellets for livestock. Prepare for wool pellets for your garden! Wool in the garden is not a novel idea. We've long known that it makes a fantastic fertilizer and weed barrier. Wool retains moisture, deters snails, and slowly releases nitrogen as it biodegrades. But instead of lumping it around the tops of our plants, which many of us already do...

Can Wool Save Peatlands?
มุมมอง 5257 หลายเดือนก่อน
Peatlands are among the most carbon-rich wetland ecosystems on earth. When damaged or degraded, they release all that carbon back out into the environment. And in a warming planet, that's the last thing we need. At the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Wales, they've been using imported coconut husk to create portable "dams" across erosion-prone areas to slow runoff and keep soil in place. Bu...
Can Wool Cure the Winter Blues?
มุมมอง 1.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Oh sure, you could curl up in your favorite blanket for temporary relief from the winter blues. But a far more effective cure is to be sure you are getting your daily dose of vitamin D3-especially if you live in regions that don't get a lot of sun in the winter. According to the Cleveland Clinic, nearly one billion people worldwide are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D has been linked with ever...
Can You Wash Wool in the Snow?
มุมมอง 1.6K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Long before the advent of the washing machine, humans wore clothes that needed to stay clean. And one of the oldest and best methods for keeping wool clothes, rugs, blankets, coats, sheepskin, and everything else clean was to haul it outside and give it a good scrubbing in the snow. Think I'm joking? Think again! Here I show you how I prefer to wash my clothes in the snow. Note that heavily soi...
Why Won't Wool Burn?
มุมมอง 9999 หลายเดือนก่อน
Why do they always say you should carry an old wool blanket in the back of your car? Hint: It's not just for warmth. Wool is a really good fire extinguisher. How so? And what would happen if you tried to put out the fire with polyester? Can Wool Make You Smarter?
มุมมอง 1.1K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wouldn't it be amazing if you could increase your chance of acing a test simply by wearing certain kinds of clothing? According to a new study, you can. It all comes down to reading the label on your clothes, and choosing items that contain a fiber that's friendly to stress. But what fiber could that be? 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 I explain the new and evolving science behind this. More about the study mention...
Is Cotton Better than Cashmere for Winter?
มุมมอง 1.2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
A recent Wall St. Journal article claimed that cotton was a perfectly good alternative to cashmere for winter sweaters. What?! I say nonsense! Depending on the kind of winter weather you experience, wearing cotton instead of cashmere or wool (or any other highly insulating protein fibers) can be deadly. I explain why. Back to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After a two-year hiatus of in-person festivities because of COVID, the venerable Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival was back at the Howard County Fairgrounds to celebrate its 49th year. Take a walk with Clara Parkes through the sheep barns, show ring, and fleece building where nearly $50,000 worth of wool was sold over two days.
Clara Takes the Tom Bihn Utility Cloth for a Spin
มุมมอง 1.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After almost two years of being grounded by COVID, Clara took a very quick and careful jaunt to San Francisco. It just happened that her trip coincided with the release of a new, extremely big (52" square) version of its Shepherd's Wool Utility Cloth so Clara took it on the road to see how it performed. This took place during the November Flock Talk, which is the monthly livestream for members ...
Where There's a Wool: Inside the Zero-Waste Pencil Tin Set from Wisdom Supply Co.
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I have two passions: Wool and pens. Which may explain why I chose a career writing about wool. But it'll also explains why, when my friend Jane alerted me to this incredibly clever use of wool in a humble pencil case, I had to take a look. It pairs sustainability and utility in a brilliant, thoughtful way. Please SUBSCRIBE so that we can do more wooly things here on TH-cam. Thank you! - - - - -...
My jaw is still hanging with all the colors and bases!! Wow! The setting is beautiful. Thank you for this, Clara.
Thanks for this! I sure love wool and lanolin. There’s a hand lotion I use just because there’s so much more lanolin (a humectant) in it than other types. I didn’t know about the connection to Vitamin D3.
Avid gardener here and I *LOVE* this idea!
That’s right, the US Army is the largest consumer of wool. I’d forgotten that fact. Thanks for these.
Consider the source -WSJ. They’re just trying to sell/make a buck. It’s all they’re about and all they have. They should stick to financial subjects but they won’t. Thousands of years going through winters and - surprise - most of us have chosen wool to wear. We don’t need a publication full of itself telling us that our own experience is wrong.
Thanks for “taking us along.” This was fun. I’ve only become familiar with the crimp, etc. because of some sheep shearing videos I’ve seen.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this. Going to look them up online as we have a few family birthdays coming up. How wonderful to find a kit with NO plastic - YAY! Btw, I’ve been dragging my last 2 wax pencils around with me for decades.
Hooray for wax pencils!
Thank you so much for this, esp. that it’s in English. This is fantastic and so clearly explained. I’m not even a knitter (just a natural fabrics lover) and everything here had me drooling - it was all just beautiful. And what a great building to have it in too. Subscribe!
Thank you so much! I'm delighted to know you enjoyed this.
Ooh I would love to go next year. Thanks for sharing.
You should! Plus there's nothing like Paris in the spring, either. 😊
Wonderful!
Many thanks!
Thank you for taking me on this delicious yarn tour. May have to go to Paris next year to enjoy this firsthand.
You should!
It's possibly just as well I wasn't there or I'd have spent a fortune buying decades worth of wool to knit. But, oh my! Et je comprends le français.
It definitely was tempting!
I hope this kind of festival will spread all over the French territory. I hadn’t heard of this. You also made me discover a few independent yarn shops which is always nice! Once Tour de Fleece is over I’ll have a good reason to spend some money on new yarn ❤🎉 thank you for the excellent video. Adrien
Thank you for watching, Adrien!
Oooh what great footage, and what absolutely stunning yarns! Thanks for listing the vendors’ links, I’ll be sure to check them out!
My pleasure - thanks for watching!
Whoa. I'm just now realizing there is the Pantheon and the Parthenon and they are different.
🤣 You aren't alone. I thought the same thing for a long, long time.
This was fabulous, Clara. Thank you.
My pleasure - thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this and making it widely available. C'est magnifique! Who would have imagined a fibre fair across from the Pantheon? Ah, Paris....
I know, right?!
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! All the naturally dyed wool - wow!
I know, wasn't it gorgeous?
Enjoyed ur podcast so very much❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Thanks Clara! This was lovely and now I have to plan to be in Paris next time this lovely event takes place.
Excellent!
How fabulous!!! I really hope they do make it an annual occasion - I'd love to go!
Fingers crossed!
Thank you , I really enjoyed this recap. The yarn is so beautiful. How does one decide which skeins to bring home?
