  • Esteemed rock critic John Doran meets Jimmy Page in the second part of Noisey's The British Masters, a series where John interviews the most influential and colourful figures from British popular music history.
    This time round he chats with the founder of Led Zeppelin: a band long regarded as one of the greatest British musical exports of the 1970s, who released a tetralogy of self-titled albums that changed British rock forever. Page has been awarded an OBE, met President Obama and performed at the Olympics and Live Aid.
    The final Led Zeppelin remastered albums Presence, In Through The Out Door and Coda are out now with deluxe versions containing unheard material.

      While this is a 5 year old comment, I've just got to say, there was clearly an edit before that question, so it could've been anywhere in the conversation, but I've got no doubt they at least spoke a _bit_ before that, if it wasn't actually just later in the conversation. No way Page just said, "Hi," there's a little silence and then Doran goes, "So, when John Bonham died ..." lol.

    I count myself so fortunate to see the band in May 1973 at the height of their powers. The site was a hockey arena but we were 2 rows back from the stage so the opportunity is still appreciated, and having only recent seen my first Jeff Beck show around that time I got to see the guitar gods of my age from a few feet away. Page was a dazzling artist back then and his guitar playing was truly over our heads. We got to see them right around the time that Houses of the Holy was released. A vivid and lasting memory.

    There are many better guitarists yes, but Jimmy was by FAR the greatest rock composer/guitarist of all time. The musical landscapes he painted were so far beyond anything others were doing throughout the entire decade of the 70's. Somehow Jimmy was able to create something unique, fresh and rocking as hell on pretty much all of their studio albums one after another. His music never got boring and probably why still to this day Zeppelin has so many loyal fans. You can't really point to any one song Jimmy wrote and say "This is Zeppelin's sound..." Zeppelin sounded so much more diverse and experimental and covered new ground constantly.

      phil hems the bassist who went on tour with Plant and Page was Plants son-in-law.....a very good bass player as well as other instruments. Blood is thicker than water I suppose. Also keep in mind that Plant and Page had a much stronger bond than they did with Jones. jones was an integral part of the band on stage, but off stage he sort of went his own way , from what I’ve read. So their wasn’t the emotional bond that there was between Plant and Page....who truly enjoyed sharing a stage together. And since this was in no way a “Zeppelin reunion”, they did not feel compelled to include him.

    I'm asking this on all these interviews with great guitarists hoping one of them might actually do it. So Jimmy, if I give you £20-£30 per lesson, can you come and teach me to play my guitar? Before people start saying I'm off my rocker, you never know until you ask. He might want a few quid more, but I have an acoustic that I'm ready to throw out the feckin window as it wont make any kind of tune, my Border Collie starts looking for sheep when I start playing, so for the sake of my dogs damaged ears, a poor guitar that's never been played properly, and my neighbours Jimmy give me some lessons please. You never know, if he's ever in Lancashire he could pop in. I will make him a cup of tea and a digestive biscuit too, chocolate ones if he wants.

    • @michelle88960
      @michelle88960 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justice Blunt I want to just be able to play a tune. It's like my fingers can't reach the chords. I would like an electric guitar and play Kashmir, or Seven Nation Army or be able to do that Prince solo in the concert for George, when he came in at the end of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Or AC/DC The Jack. Am I aiming too high?? Oh and the beginning of Whole Lotta Rosie.

    • @justiceblunt1444
      @justiceblunt1444 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      michelle88960 well I guess you just needa buy an Electric guitar cause I'm not about to give you one for free. My first lesson to you is if you have a passion for guitar there's no such thing as "aiming to high" it's sounds cheesy but it's true. Secondly you should look up some of the basic Barr chords and learn a couple scales to get your fingers more used to the fret board if you want to start jamming out fast cause that's for the most part what most of these songs contain. Thirdly I'd recommend learning to read tabs so that you can teach your self how to play the songs you wanna play. And my fourth and final point is just have fun and before you go investing in an electric make sure you're having fun playing guitar on the acoustic cause if you aren't you'll just be wasting money. The truth is guitar doesn't get you laid so if that's the reason you wanna learn how to play it then that's a horrible reason. You have to really wanna learn it and practice and eventually the tune will come. The only hard part really is the beginning just like everything else in life. Keep practicing and you'll turn out great I promise

    Jimmy without Bonham is like 50 per cent less. If you have seen videos and heard bootlegs, you know the chemistry I am talking about. Reminds me of the Prince quote, ‘Page could not carry a rhythm without Bonham.’ Overstatement, but has flashes of truth. Page knows that the levels he reached with Bonham could not be replicated and he will always be unfavourably compared to the 70s him. It’s the reason he has rarely performed live since the Zep breakup apart from the 94 and 07 reunions, while his contemporaries like Beck have performed extensively.

      you seem to have no idea what you are talking about. These 3 are great singers in their own genre and have achieved great success and created great musical works. Just because its a different genre, doesnt mean you cant idolise people who create good music inside of that genre. Your comment shows your close-minded opinion when it comes to music, an opinion that luckily is quite rare today. Although i am not a fan of their music myself, i can at least appreciate what they did with their genre and that they are good musicians

    I always find it telling that Page only made one solo album, then disappeared into doing cameos.
    Also, +1 to the whole "why is this interviewer so wasted he can't come out with the right years for his research on any actual enthusiasm in his voice" as well as "sound mastering, lEARN IT!"

    As a scruffy longhair sworn to a life of bluejeans, it pains me to admit that Doran looks great all trimmed up and preppy.
    That said, I used to love Zep back in the day, then got exhausted of blues rock. I still enjoyed the interview, but I feel like Page is a bit distanced by fame to make it as effective of an interview as I'd have liked.

    I actually met Jimmy and spent some time with him several years ago . He is a very nice , down to earth guy that isn’t full of himself. He wasn’t into self importance and has a natural charm . The only thing that I find a bit difficult to understand is him having a relationship currently with a woman who is in her mid 30’s and he’s in his late 70’s . I do find that disturbing. I have tremendous admiration for him as an artist but that bit is .. off putting .

    fuck Kenneth Anger. the soundtrack for Lucifer that Page wrote is the most evil music I have ever heard. JIMMY seems more and more relevant as a producer now, a super producer at that, given all great producers we now have in so many genres, than the super talented guitar player he once was. Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and even Ginger Baker who were of his time have acknowledged that they love Page as a guitarist even though they dissed led Zeppelin. Having said that he is indeed the most influential guitarist/producer in rock music. Yet he kinda stopped in the nineties.. I just wish he creates more music.. he said he was working on sumthing..

    Jimmy is an enigma for me. Stick to music, and only music, and he’s eloquent, gentle, friendly, and generous. Turn to anything personal, like complimenting a pillow on his couch or mentioning his interest in the color black and he can be defensive. It’s never rude, but he obviously had hard barriers.
