I think Arkham Knight has the best story in the series. My favourite thing about Batman is how he is always presented with temptations to give in to an easy immoral choice but through incredible mental strength and perseverance, he pulls through always. All the time. This is done in previous Batman games too but it's one of the central themes in Knight. The joker, in this game and within this universe from Batman's perspective, is characterized as this mercilessly terrifyingly sadistic and relentlessly force of evil that defies morals. And given what Joker's done to Batman in the Arkham verse and pretty much any other media, it's easy to believe given the uncompromising lengths of evil to get what he wants is a good representation of what Batman fears most. This image of Joker, Batman's polar opposite, who's killed and terrorised his closest allies and friends is constantly espousing ideas of what Batman should and shouldn't do. It's contextualised by the brilliant use of the plot device of the fear toxin having an extended effect. By this way, Rocksteady gave players a window into Batman's mind and what he is thinking about any given point in story. We know all the time what Batman's thinking about at any given moment. This level of personal connection with Batman is missing in all previous Arkham games. This is interactive storytelling at its best. We know what's going on inside the hood because his fears are being spoken aloud. This makes Batman incredibly human while still doing justice to his "extraordinary mortal among ordinary mortals" side of the character. It's in Batman's nature to be stoic brooding and refusing to give in to the immoral temptations that his villains, particularly the Joker, always confront him with. It's a story of overcoming fears with a great deal of perseverance and self control while being surrounded by situations that cause self-doubt. That makes Batman the hero he is and the story of Arkham Knight does that beautifully. I am surprised and flabbergasted by how well Rocksteady knows Batman that they were able to weave a story about Batman's perseverance and self-doubt. The story of good in people and in Batman and his strength required to outlast the forces of inward evils. Joker was Batman's fear and Scarecrow was the catalyst of that fear. I am surprised by how they managed to create a stoic but an emotional character in Batman better than previous games. Maybe they were being held back by Dini.
Fun fact, when you lock up riddler before scarecrow, he’ll still make the broadcast that they’re still riddles to be solved. When I found this out I was like “YOURE IN JAIL!”
What I did is that I 100% the game and when I got to new game plus, the game saves your trophies. So in new game plus, if you turn riddler in, you have all of the trophies right from the start.
You need a secret dialogue which is like "So, I'm first. Instead of capturing Knight or Scarecrow, you've decided I was the most lethal target in Gotham tonight. Congratulations, Batman. You finally made a non-moronic decision." and then in private, him talking to Cash like "What?! I'm FIRST? Tell me he got Pyg before me. Firefly? Hush? Not even Hush?! The Hush persona doesn't really exist in the Arkham Universe. This version of Thomas Elliot is known as the Identity Thief and hardly counts as a supervillian.
Batman : “Finally. It took me a whole night to find all the trophies and capture Riddler. It’s almost morning, time to head back.” Cash : “Um… Batman? Scarecrow and the Arkham Knight are still on the loose” Batman : “The what?!?”
Cash when batman was still trying to hunt down riddler: Batman! What the f*ck are you doing? The city is on the brink of destruction! Batman: Shut up cash! I'm trying to find the riddler's trophies! Aha! I found it! It was behind an old plant! The riddler... really is a criminal mastermind... Only 500 more to go!
I love this because it shows Joker as voicing Batman's inner turmoil. Eddie's problems are psychiatric. His mania and ego caused by an abusive childhood, and Batman knows it. He's not an agent of chaos like Joker, a zealot overseeing a cult of death like Ra's, or even a common criminal like Penguin. There is a genuine problem he has that he needs to face.
That's definitely true. But The Riddler himself refuses to actually accept psychiatric help. His own ego won't allow it. A lot of these villains do have tragic backstories. But they themselves crossed the line so many times that many of them will likely never be redeemed. Some don't want the redemption.
You're right but Eddie is also a narcissist. Narcissists almost never accept or even consider treatment because it would require them to acknowledge something is wrong with them which they cannot do
True but the Riddler is an adult who is responsible for himself, now. And then there's the cost/benefit of trying to rehabilitate a guy who will just use it as an opportunity to escape and kill people. Plus some people are psychopaths--they lack the ability to empathize with others so they don't mind hurting people and treating them like objects. The Batman series is always fuzzy in the psychological sense...whatever keeps the story going or makes the villains interesting, I guess.
The Joker makes solid points not-infrequently; it's just nobody listens because, y'know, it's the _fucking Joker._ Nobody is going to take his philosophical perspectives seriously, regardless of how good or bad they are.
I mean joker is meant to be a criticism of Batman’s whole ideology in numerous ways: how inefficiently he handles problems how his motives are selfish rather than to help people How he puts everybody around him in harms way How he doesn’t fix the brokenness of the system and is just another tool to suppress the people into stay loyal to a world that increasingly cares less and less about them Among other things, jokers point is frequently that him and Batman are two sides of the same coin, the only difference is that Batman uses his ideology for law and good, while joker uses it for evil and chaos.
This Joker is also mostly in BAtan's head, with some extra odd stuff going on, so it's not too hard to believe that he knows Arrkham is a failure of a system for helping people
It feels weird how almost every side mission ends with a heartfelt goodbye to a member of the batfamily but you could have that happen before Batman decides to “die”
I think it's not secret cause riddler's mission is so long that players usually leave it to the bottom of the list, and don't hear the joker because of the end of the story
did you know: nobody cares that nobody cares, now go worry about what everyone else thinks about you having a pulse or your account username you outdated meme of a username also its unfortunate that the individual with the username "ape" reminds me of nft's somehow for some reason
Overall, when it comes to Joker commenting on Riddler in this game, it feels like Joker is rather sympathetic and relating to Riddler the most out of all villains which was a pretty good touch. When you think about it, they have alot in common. The craziness, the obsession with batman, etc.
I did all Riddler (or Enigma in Origins) challenges but City’s. I lost my patience in City. I felt the same, but when I saw that Riddler will actually be locked up, I went for it. Origins was annoying and then lackluster upon completion, Asylum was an okay Riddler ending.
Same. Once I saw he had Selina, I made getting her out priority one, even to the point of speed running a bit of the story to unlock the second area of the city so I could finish her questline. I feel that’s a very Batman response considering how much he really loves her.
@Eric Wicker Oh god dammit, I never finished my thought. I think the Arkham games tie the closest to the Animated Series. Ignoring JL and BB; it seems most ideas were inspired by animated.
@Eric Wicker biggest one is this series showcases how screwed up Amadeah Arkham and Warden Sharpe are to the point where they seem to take more care in gleeful torture and punishment rather than rehabilitation. You have to go hunting for it in Asylum but the text shows they're just as bad as the villains but hold some form of institutional power like Strange.
I went out of my way to capture Riddler before anyone else in a New Game+ run, which you can do at 60% main story completion, and I was hoping there'd be some unique dialogue like Riddler saying "you captured ME before ANYONE ELSE?" Didn't happen. In my head canon, every time someone else was brought in like Simon Stagg Riddler was thinking "seriously, even YOU lasted longer than me out there?"
I know that joker makes fun of the fact that Batman just beats up and locks up his villains, but literally every time he’d beat a villain in the past, he’d send them to Arkham. A mental institution. In fact he’s probably one of the only superhero’s I know about that actually tries to get any of his villains any psychiatric help.
Yeah but Arkham asylum isn’t exactly helpful to it’s patients if i remember correctly a lot of them are tortured when they get there, by corrupt guards
@@bullymaguire2913 hey, that’s not Batman’s fault. Honestly judging by the story, he was mostly surprised by how shitty they were. In some of the comics however, Arkham does end up becoming a rather decent mental institution.
@@bullymaguire2913 well that’s probably because to do anything about it, he’d need to basically oppose the cops and local Gotham government. Which is what he’s not there to do. He just wants to get the criminals off the streets.
Whilst Joker isn't wrong, there's a difference between, say, a kid shoplifting and getting into schoolyard fights and flamboyant mass murderers. At some point you've just gotta say that they've had their chance and... make it so they can't hurt anyone ever again.
Depends on the circumstances of the murderer. They should still never see the light of day but some of them are victims of their environment growing up.
Joker has a point. Or he would if Bruce didn't actually fund his own charities to reduce crime and other humanitarian efforts, only for the Court of Owls to undermine those efforts.
You do know that charities are an extremely ineffective way to actually help those in need, right? Actual changes in infrastructure is the only way for Bruce with all his wealth to make effective change. The game (and the Batman mythos in general) constantly harps that Gotham is corrupt so who is to say that the charities are even being run effectively? Bruce spends most of his time as Batman and has other people monitoring those charities- not personally. That money can be dumped somewhere but not be used in the right way at the lower levels. Hell, the creators knew that Batman was doing such a shit job of actually helping that they had to create a secret society as to show that Gotham cannot be truly fixed. It's just lazy.
@@mattwo7 If I remember correctly, Bruce often makes donations to Arkham Asylum. But super villains are either breaking out or relapsing into their worst tendencies at some point or another. They're employing literal psychopaths to work on the mentally unstable people there - despite Bruce donating huge amounts of money to the Asylum.
@@mattwo7 The creators behind Batman had to create a whole ass secret society so that Batman wouldn’t look as bad for not actually helping Gotham. Charities exist irl but the situations they're funding don't necessarily get better, even when billionaires fund them (Bill Gates for example). But Bruce doesn't use his wealth and power to make structural change. Alfred himself even said that all Bruce does is beat up poor people despite having the power and money to buy Gotham and solve its issues. Bruce CHOOSES to do the most ineffective way to help people. Besides, I don't have much sympathy for the guy who constantly abuses one of (possibly all) of his adoptive children, going as far to break Jason's collarbone because he was about to kill the Joker. Batman is not mentally sound. He isn't necessarily doing this to help people but to channel his anger at the detriment of others.
@@grandempressvicky6387 The problem with Arkham Asylum is that it's _Arkham_ Asylum. It was literally founded by a guy who after going nuts from killing an inmate with electroshock "therapy" (which at the time of publication of his first appearance in Batman #258 (October 1974) had been falling out of favor) ironically wound up in his own jail. Also, out-of-universe, named after a city in HP Lovecraft's books.
I've played this game so many times that every line is engrained into my memory when playing it. I finished this video and just instantly knew I've already gotten the audio before 😭
Only a fool represents himself. Not because he's uninformed on the law, or wouldn't even present himself well. No, because the courts just don't take people who represent themselves seriously.
All that planning, all those gadgets, all those trophies hidden over the city, all that effort capturing Catwoman and constructing those puzzle rooms/obstacle courses, and Riddler is the first one taken down. Insult to injury.
In theory, isn't everyone who has ever gone to Arkham Asylum and come at just as bad in a state that's beyond psychiatric help? I guess it then becomes a discussion about the quality of help they got.
That awkward silence at the end, because joker is being sarcastic and you realize Batman’s method with riddler is wrong and it’s what keeps him coming back Beat him up n lock him up and he’ll always come back with more deadlier riddles When in all reality the man needs psychiatric help
@@ginogatash4030 considering arkham Asylum is an ancient building full of cold, poorly lit rooms and restraints and borderline torture for inmates I think a psychiatric hospital would be a bit more effective than arkham
@@winterflan yes but that's pretty much the only psychiatric hospital they have, Gotham isn't exactly known for its outstanding mental health care, or uncorrupted institutions.
Riddler really fuckin said he’ll represent himself as if Gotham courts aren’t a coin flip between a revolving door and being locked in a room that locks from the inside
If you haven’t tried it already, try beating scarecrow absolutely first.. you get pretty cool reactions from everyone else after they discover Batman’s identity
That Joker line was perfect for Riddler because, despite what everyone says about Batman, there’s very few enemies of his that are actually “fixable” mentally and Nigma is probably the best example of those.
@@DrakeBarrow This is oddly true. Batman does act "in the right" a lot. Tells others what they need (you need. etc). Hates himself, which is why he hates joker. Lost his dad. Yep. Logic checks out.
That moment when the Joker is, sort of, the voice of reason. Seriously, a LOT of Batman villains could end their criminal activities with a bit of help. Best example being Harley Quinn who went back to being a psychiatrist and is pretty much an extented member of the Bat Family after Poison Ivy helped her. She’s still crazy… but instead of being a super-villain she’s now an Anti-hero
Okay but Harley kind of proves the point. The Joker *was* getting psychiatric help, from Harlene or whatever she was called, but instead of the Joker getting better he just turned her (at least somewhat) crazy I think they've shown many times that the Batman villains have psychiatrists; they are in an asylum after all
Yeah yeah that's cool, but what's cooler is the fact that this guy took all the time to hunt down all 243 trophies *before* the finishing the main story!
Joker’s got a point though. When you get right down to it, most of what Batman does is just physically assaulting and incarcerating mentally ill people. He could be investing his money as Bruce Wayne into creating a proper psychiatric facility for them since Arkham was more like a dungeon run by man who was psychotic himself. I mean, they literally kept Croc in a sewer and just tossed him meat. That’s supposed to rehabilitate the man?!
I love this game! I wish more had the joker in your head, lol wanted the option to actually obey the joker, that wouldve made for an intwresting story arc as Batman wrestles with his choices

The "question mark" for riddler is genius.
Underrated comment.
This is a good one.
Hm, he looks a little *puzzled.*
Narcissists almost never accept or even consider treatment because it would require them to acknowledge something is wrong with them which they cannot do
Yeah it I’m pretty sure The Riddler has murdered several people in the Arkham games, directly or indirectly.
The tapes in Arkham Asylum make it pretty clear that Riddler won't accept any sort of psychiatric help.
You are a madman. You finished Riddler's quest before finishing the story. I only have deep respect to you, fellow detective.
Dude, there's nobody else in that cell. He finished Riddler's quest before STARTING the story.

when THE JOKER actually makes a solid point you know there's something wrong
The Joker makes solid points not-infrequently; it's just nobody listens because, y'know, it's the _fucking Joker._
Nobody is going to take his philosophical perspectives seriously, regardless of how good or bad they are.
I mean joker is meant to be a criticism of Batman’s whole ideology in numerous ways:
how inefficiently he handles problems
how his motives are selfish rather than to help people
How he puts everybody around him in harms way
How he doesn’t fix the brokenness of the system and is just another tool to suppress the people into stay loyal to a world that increasingly cares less and less about them
Among other things, jokers point is frequently that him and Batman are two sides of the same coin, the only difference is that Batman uses his ideology for law and good, while joker uses it for evil and chaos.
This Joker is also mostly in BAtan's head, with some extra odd stuff going on, so it's not too hard to believe that he knows Arrkham is a failure of a system for helping people
Then again the last person who tried giving psiquiatric help to the Joker became his side bitch.
"solid point" Well seeing how "Psychatric help" worked out with Joker....i dont think that point is so solid.
It feels weird how almost every side mission ends with a heartfelt goodbye to a member of the batfamily but you could have that happen before Batman decides to “die”
They also did have him predict that nobody knows what could happen after that night.
It was a contingency plan thinking about the worst Case :P
I think it's not secret cause riddler's mission is so long that players usually leave it to the bottom of the list, and don't hear the joker because of the end of the story
That’s exactly why
“Secret” is used pretty loosely for a lot of different games it’s just so it’s easier to find lol
You know it's good when the joker says something non crazy/insane and makes sense more than usual
He did that the entire gane series 😆 🤣
"I coulda brought me here twice as quickly"
There’s always that one guy😂
Joker's in the right.
but even so, batman can't do much about it. He's tried on many occasions to get joker psychiatric help as well.

Overall, when it comes to Joker commenting on Riddler in this game, it feels like Joker is rather sympathetic and relating to Riddler the most out of all villains which was a pretty good touch. When you think about it, they have alot in common. The craziness, the obsession with batman, etc.
Funny when you remember that's not actually Joker but Batman subconscious manifesting itself as joker
This was highlighted quite well in The Batman (2022). Also the fact that Jim Carrey's Riddler was basically just Joker 2.0
"the craziness, the obsession with Batman..."
...that's every Batman villain.
@@megaultradamn No other villains in the Arkham universe are as obsessed with Batman as those two tho
@@argo9721 that's the whole point though. The joker and batman are basically the same, it's just that one is slightly more psychotic than the other.
Nice to see people still uploading Arkham content
Imagine prepping, hiding and creating all riddles and puzzles and challenges only to be defeated first 💀💀
"Batman will never solve this o- wait why is he pulling up GameBATS, is that a walk-through?"
This is the only game where I actually try to solve all the riddles just to catch him. I did save CatWoman because that’s a must.
That it is, that it is my man.
@@motodog242 Arkham City has the most annoying puzzles, but at least seeing Riddler in his own trap makes up for it.
You don't actually need to solve all the riddles in Arkham City, you just need to solve enough until Barbara tells you Riddler's location.
I think bringing in Riddler last is equally insulting cuz it shows him that he was the least priority after literally everyone else
Yea but he would interpret it as im the smartest person here and batmans true rival because i outlasted all of you
They tried so many times to reason with him, he is beyond therapy he has to accepted he needs helps
They haven’t really tried to help him much in the arkhamverse
to be fair, arkham asylum is about as helpful as a tiger is harmless
@Eric Wicker I think the Arkham Knight story kind of proves that wrong. Red Hood tells a completely different tale.
I beat the riddler before finishing the storyline, I finished all of the side missions first, it was just lucky that there was the secret ending
I appreciate the dedication but all you had to do was get the trophies on your normal game and then go to new game plus
Riddler was the biggest pain in the arse in all three games.

"I will represent myself" lmao yes because there will be an actual jury in the world that lets you walk free.
Funny enough, there's a short story where the court had to let Riddler walk free after Arkham City shutdown.

Yeah exactly. What’s he supposed to do, let himself be hit?
"Nigma Balls" - Batman
this riddler trophy findings and doing all 240 of those riddles are such a pain in ass...
Ironically, Joker’s line of “Beat ‘em up, lock ‘em up” is exactly what happens to him at the end of the main story.
“I will represent myself” *immediately admits to crimes and threatens death*
Imagine scarecrow being annoyed because Batman has spent all night getting riddler trophies instead of coming after him.
‘Well riddle me this, what’s green, proud and ass-kicked all over?’
That security guard had no filter 💀
“I could have brought me here twice as quickly”
Riddler a professional hater
@@grandempressvicky6387 Next you'll tell me Alfred is unpaid. Show me on the doll where Batman hurt you.

All those robots he built.
So that's a bit of self awareness from bats himself.
In theory, isn't everyone who has ever gone to Arkham Asylum and come at just as bad in a state that's beyond psychiatric help? I guess it then becomes a discussion about the quality of help they got.

Every suit except the regular one just makes these clips look so fucking ridiculous.
The Joker *was* getting psychiatric help, from Harlene or whatever she was called, but instead of the Joker getting better he just turned her (at least somewhat) crazy
