The Pelton wheel is a momentum water turbine. It was invented by Lester Allan Pelton in the 1870s.[1][2] The Pelton Wheel extracts energy from the impulse of the moving water, as opposed to the dead weight of the water like the traditional excessive water wheel. Many variations of the pulse turbine existed before the Pelton design, but they were less efficient than the Pelton design. The water that leaves those wheels is usually still at high speed, taking away a lot of the dynamic energy brought to the wheels. The Pelton paddle shape is designed so that when the rim runs at half the speed of the jet, the water leaves the wheel at a very low speed; so his design extracts almost all of the water's pulse energy - allowing for a very efficient turbine.
    History
Lester Allan Pelton was born in Vermillion, Ohio in 1829. In 1850, he traveled overland to California, participating in the gold rush. Pelton sold fish he caught in the Sacramento River.[3] In 1860, he moved to Camptonville, a center of mining activity. At this time, many of the mining operations powered by steam engines consumed large amounts of wood as their fuel. Some water wheels have been used in larger rivers, but they are ineffective in smaller streams found near mines. Pelton worked on a design for a water wheel that would work with the relatively small flows found in these lines.[4]
In the mid-1870s, Pelton developed a wooden prototype of his new wheel. In 1876, approached the Miners Founder in Nevada City to build the first commercial model in iron. The first Pelton wheel was installed at the Mayflower Mine in Nevada City in 1878.[4]. The efficiency advantages of Pelton's invention were quickly recognized and his product quickly became in high demand. By the mid-1880s, the Miners Foundry could not meet the demand, and in 1888 Pelton sold the ownership of his name and the patent for his invention to the Pelton Water Wheel Company of San Francisco. The company established a factory at 121/123 Main Street in San Francisco.[5]
The Pelton Water Wheel Company manufactures a large number of Pelton Wheels in San Francisco that are shipped worldwide. In 1892, the Company added a branch on the east coast at 143 Liberty Street in New York City. By 1900, more than 11,000 turbines were in use. In 1914, the company moved to new, larger manufacturing facilities at 612 Alabama Street in San Francisco. In 1956, the company was acquired by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, which ended production of Pelton wheels.[5]

Hello, is there any way to add your materials list to the description? I'd love to try and recreate these things in my backyard. Thank you.
