This dude's performance on this album changed the way metal drummers looked at the drums. He grew up learning all sorts of different genres of music and that heavily influenced his style of playing. His other band at the time was jazz-fusion-metal; Cynic. A few years later he'd be playing alt-rock for like 10 years before coming back to metal. Gene Hoglan has said that he had to step his game up after watching what Sean could do in Human.

Chuck was talented and skilled, but what always impressed me was his creativity and vision, pushing the envelope, and one way was to work with amazing musicians and let them do what they do. ALL of the drummers (percussionists) in Death brought their own strengths, created great music, and helped move the genre forward.

    • @hazardeur

this is basically what happens if a fusion drummer wants to play metal. he's been training himself in jazz and fusion and then basically went to play in Death and laong with Cynic, creating a perfect hybrid of the two genres that still hasn't been surpassed to this day. No other band has had this natural flow and inventive yet muscial patterns and rhythmic ideas.

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

you NEED to check out his cynic live video from around the same time. It's a sideview of him and it's a full concert. Shows a pretty good view and gives a better insight on how creative, musical and overall insane Sean's playing is. He avoids flashy stuff but he doesn't need to impress anyone with that as his inventive patterns and playing are already impressive enough on their own

hard to believe he played this nearly note for note as he played it on the album. i remember being into slayer and thrash at the time, i was 15, and had just started playing the drums. lombardo was an utter god to me, then a friend of mine gave me a cassette tape of this album in school, and my mind was smashed!!!! his double kick playing was like nothing ever heard before, and then playing the jazzy stuff with the hands over the top, it was next level. btw you should check out the lyrics on this whole album, chuck was a brilliant writer

The album this came from (Human) was what set the stage for tech death. And Sean was a big part of that. He only did one album with Death, and was succeeded by Gene Hoglan. I saw Gene say in an interview once that he was blown away by Human, and he remembered saying "good luck if you ever need to replace that guy". And then one day Chuck (Schuldiner, the lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter of Death) called him and asked him to join as the drummer. Gene was drumming for Death Angel back then, but splitting his time between drums and guitar. Gene said that joining Death and having to learn Sean's drumming forced him to lift his game, and ultimately choose to focus on drums. So we have the Gene that we have today, in part, due to Sean and Chuck. Sean changed the game, metal drumming took a huge leap forward thanks to him, and he doesn't get enough credit for that imo. Glad you enjoyed the vid, he's definitely a guy worth looking into more. RIP Sean.

Hey did you know he hit his hi hat with his foot when double kicking?
I was lucky to talk to him and the band in a small gig like 20some people and got a picture of him explaining to my mate with the double pedal that he was used to jazz to always have ha hit hat pulse into the foot so when started double kick and metal he just keeped that pulse with the heel.
Way back before it was kind of a legend having that double kick that fast and doing things on the hat with the heel... But to him was so natural.
Such a nice guy and one of the most underrated drummers of all time. There is a big shift after him in metal drumming and thus in general drumming. Watch the tribute video Thomas Haake raving about him and Gene Hoglan saying that when first he heared "Human" he said, "I'm lucky I don't have to play that".
    R.I.P.

Sean was such a monster, specially for his age. Years ago someone mentioned his playing and
described it as a cross between Neil Peart with a dash of Weckl and a heaping spoon of Lombardo. Perfect description. I really enjoyed this video.

It's important to admit that this guy was asking first. It was his gift that allowed the whole style to take a giant step forward. He changed the rules of the game! In addition to power and speed, he brought metal-drumming musicality! He was just the first. It is always difficult to be the first.

Voice is an instrument for me as guitars, drums. It gives the whole picture. Doesn't matter about what he sings at least for me. Listen to some Melodic Death Metal bands and you'll understand that without growling their music is not so tasty. Because voice, guitars, drum are the same fist!

This what happens when a crazy skilled non-metal guy starts play metal. You can see how he play it much different from majority of metal drummers, because he wasn't a typical closeminded metal drummer who only want to play fast, Reinert just play it like it should be played. RIP.

    Andrew . . .
I've described the band he was plucked from by the late-Chuck Schuldiner of Death, that being "Cynic" (they released many demos that were being passed around before their official album) and their only album at that time "Focus" (1993) - as the _Mahavishnu Orchestra_ of Death Metal. Even Metalheads/Death Metal fans back then didn't know what to make of them.
The Death "Human" album is pretty insane for its time, I would HIGHLY suggest listening on your own to that album and Cynic's "Focus".
I've seen Cynic only once when they reformed (and created 3 more albums) and released their 2nd album in 2008. Sean was a joy to watch, and "see" his precision (and as you said, "calm"), and him "singing along" to many tracks. Sean died "1 week" after Neil Peart in January of 2020 :'(. And his former fellow Cynic Bassist Sean Malone also died in December of 2020.
    - Please look for Sean's _interviews_ and more footage from Cynic :).

Sean was an absolute legend for his time. Check out Van Williams from Nevermore because he plays similar but also steps it up a notch by playing ambidextrous....meaning he uses both hands to play normally usual snare and cymbals attributed to "regular" hands. Crazy to see live.

Sean Reinert is/was (same as the all in DEATH) a legend/s. The Sound of Perseverance (1998) album is a school of death (or whole) metal, especially in drums (but without Sean Reinert). Sean also shone as member of other band CYNIC (albums Traced in Air, Re-traced, Carbon-based Anatomy). Unfortunately, He died last year.
