Many people probably already know this, but Sunsoft once owned the rights to the 'Terminator' movie license and this game was originally intended to make use of the license. It's made apparent by certain enemy types (namely the final boss) and pieces of music that Sunsoft had been making progress with the original 'Terminator' concept. Sometime during development, though, they lost the rights and had to re-edit the game into what we have now. When you look at the abysmal NES Terminator game we DID get, one can't help but wonder what could've been had Sunsoft been able to retain the license.
But no matter...Journey to Silius is a very engaging and challenging run and gun game, and features some of the best music I've heard on the NES. You start off with a simple hand gun (which has unlimited ammo) and gradually build an arsenal of more powerful guns the further you progress in the game. Since your other guns are limited in ammunition, it's best to save them for the boss battles. You find occasional health and ammo pickups upon killing enemies and you'll be needing LOTS of both. Thankfully, Stage 4 was generous with health pickups. The final stage is unforgiving. There are no enemies, but as soon as you start, the screen will begin scrolling to the right and you have to keep up with it, all the while making your way over and through all the obstacles and pits to the end. This stage also requires precise timing in a few areas or you're dead. Make it as perfect as you can because there are no health pickups here and you have two final bosses to fight at the end. Good luck! ;) -

Naoki Kodaka made the music for Sunsoft games. This, Batman, Fester's Quest, Blaster Master and Gremlins II have some of the best tunes for NES. Obviously highly influenced by metal.

Fun fact: In the times of developing "Journey to Silius", it was originally made as a "The Terminator" game. However, Sunsoft somehow lost the license. They later re-imagining the characters, the storyline, and the levels. Thus, Journey to Silius was born.
Can you imagine if Sunsoft kept the license, it would've been one of the good games of NES plus a WAY BETTER Terminator game than the other one we actually had.
Other than that, the music is still awesome. =D

  • @DTM-Books
    @DTM-Books 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Such a terrific chiptune soundtrack. I often wondered why the people who made music for videogames weren't working in pop music instead. Whoever wrote this could have had a successful career as a pop songwriter.
As for the videogame itself, Journey to Silius is excellent, another great example of late NES era titles that push the 8-bit hardware to its limits. It's pretty short and easy, one of those games where you can learn the boss battles and never get so much as a scratch. But that's perfectly fine since so many NES titles were brutally, torturously difficult.

I haven't thought about it since then and 26 years later I randomly remembered it and looked it up and now I'm ashamed of how bad I was back then. I just loved the music and the art so much I just had fun looking at the game even if I kept losing. This is true with a lot of games now that I think about it. Damn I'm a legit noob!

@@shirayuri3950 You aren't mate, some NES games were simply too punishing and required too much involvement, and often times we just moved on to newer games getting released after being stuck for months or even more, and we usually never looked back at those. But you can absolutely beat it should you apply to it, but as we grow older our energy and time for this kind of stuff inevitably wears thin :( I got my revenge on several games likes that 20 years later lol

If Mindscape (the company who published that crappy NES game of the Terminator) didn't obtain the rights of the Terminator, the early 90's could've been the heyday for Sunsoft when they made other good movie-based games which are Batman and Gremlins 2.

+Dumi the Sandwich Sunsoft developed and released 2 NES games in the same year of 1990. Batman AND Gremlins 2. Journey to Silius was also released in 1990 but it was only published by Sunsoft. Silius is from the same creator as Blaster Master. So are you really saying that it would've been difficult for Sunsoft to handle three movie licenses in the same year despite Silius being developed by a different company?

This game is overall very clean. It's got nice looking graphics, everything feels on point, and the soundtrack is one of the best on the system. With that said though, I'd be lying if I said that I play it very often. There's just something about it that's pretty repetitive overall, not to mention how insanely difficult it is!

Pimpeaux Not so difficult. I beated the game when I was 12 years old.

I know what you mean - having just watched the playthrough the stages don't really have much variety. Things only really shake up in the final stage when suddenly we get an autoscroll, and conveyor belts etc

Journey to Sillius looked like a TERMINATOR game. Amazing.

Right from the first stage you can tell this was originally a game based on the Terminator

I beat this game for the first time yesterday :) man this game is hard, but it doesn't look that hard on youtube. Well played! I get frustrated at the mini boss in stage 3. That mini boss is annoying, and so is the droids from the chopper in stage 1. This is game that you have to know when and where the enemy appears in advance.

The first stage ... The music is so freaking good. Loved this game when I was a child.. they should make a serious remake to this and keep the original sound track . Still best ever mDe

this game would benefited so much from L/R bumpers to switch weapons as an extra alternative way to switch weapons. interesting that things stop attacking you from the left in later stages.
