  • As seen at Eurobike 2019 - The latest Future Works release from Zwift which adds a mountain bike course along with real-time steering in-game. To get the most out of this you'll need to ensure your setup allows for handlebar movement and your phone is mounted on the center of your bars.

    Man I can't wait for them to put in some proper distance XC paths just like this for practicing MTB riding. Sharp, sudden, short climbs with drops and hard pedaling with soft pedaling, etc. My road bike friends don't understand why MTB is so hard, this video shows why. No constant cadence, no consistent gradient, nothing is smooth and steady about it. It's such good training.

    Wow!! That worked really well. Tried it with the Wahoo Climb and it was amazing. Steering needs a bit of power steering though with the Kickr Mat under it. Will have to put something under it to make the steering easier. That was fun!

    The gradient changes on the trail make this ideal for the Kickr Climb so really interested to see how it works with that. You don’t get much side to side movement on the bars with a Climb though so the actual steering itself might be a struggle. Chapeau to Zwift though, it looks awesome.

    Following your Kickr Bike videos and am close to pulling the trigger on buying one, but this makes me question that decision. Why buy the "ultimate training tool" if it's already not compatible with the newest feature of Zwift? You probably have the ear of Wahoo better than I -- are they saying anything about this?

  • @keithallen4313
    @keithallen4313 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    First go today and got the Mtb on my second go. Love the steering. I have made a swivel plate out of a car cam belt tensioner bearing with plates welded to it . One lower leg has a bolt the change the angle . 16 inch wood top plate with Tacx wheel holder mounted in the centre with one screw. Lucky it even seems to self centre fairly well. After setting the angle of the turn plate there seem no movement at the back of the bike on the trainer. I am planning to leave the turn plate on my setup full time as I like the extra movement on the bike even just riding on the unsteered Zwift.

    Lama, if you do another video for the new steering feature/MTB course (I think you alluded to a Kickr Climb attempt in another video), one thing that might be interesting to those of us that haven't attempted yet is a camera setup over your bars, sync'd with the video of the onscreen course navigation, just to give us a better sense of how much you are turning your bars to ride the course. Just a thought.

    How does it feel in terms of counter steering? ie at a certain speed, say above 10kph you actually turn slightly left with the bars and lean to the right to go right. It's interesting, and clever perhaps, that they have introduced this on mtb on a big climb where this sensation, or lack thereof, would be less obvious. I think they will struggle to emulate the realism when/if it's applied to the rest of the game. It's still a cool little feature either way, and good on them for trying!

    WAHOO ENGINEERING PLEASE NOTE!!!
    Here is a great hack I will soon put on youtube. When I was trying to decide between Kickr Bike and wahoo trainer, I was planning to use Zwift, with a particular interest in riding their new MTB trail. However, I was worried about the fact that steering with smart phone running ZC (Zwift Companion) would only work with wahoo trainer. And as a MTBr I want to ride trails! (Repack ridge) But with an engineering and fabrication background I had a feeling there would be a no-harm Kickr bike hack I would come up with. And so I got the bike, and lo and behold there is! Create Moveable handle bars. I tested the concept by loosening the screws attaching stem to head set Post, applied some high viscosity lubricant, mounted the phone on handle bars with ZC running, and it works: handle bars move, and you can ride repack ridge and steer with Kickr Bike! I have since fabricated my own stem, headset assembly that does this more permanently-with no harm done to Kickr bike as I just swapped the parts. And, this “hack” works incredibly well. latency is not bad, and it really makes for great virtual mountain biking and a great workout. Also moving handle bars generally add to realism and decreases fatigue. So If Wahoo engineers are listening: Make an add on handle bar set with freely moving steering to pair with ZC with smart phone attached. Or better yet, use encoders in the head stem assembly and team up with Zwift for Kicker bike steering. In the meantime I’ll continue to use this mountain bike steering hack! It’s friggin awesome!
    Joe

    Updated to IOS13 and Zwift. Finished the circuit Ok but found when leaving and going downhill a high level of resistance.Tried exiting and resuming but that didn't;t help. Shane, did you get a chance when you spun around for your 2nd lap to see if you could ride it backwards? That would be wicked sweet if they enable that. All those brutal "moon trail" climbs would be nutty if they were reversed into descents.
    I'm hooked enough after watching to have added to cart out of my wishlist and purchased, the Kinetic Turntable riser I had previously saved when I saw the first videos of this features a few weeks back at Eurobike. I did some quick research back then on "spinny" risers and I think on Zwift Insider someone (Eric perhaps) had mentioned the Kinetic Turntable, so went ahead and grabbed it. I'll give it a go without any initial additional modifications to angle it, and see how that goes and adjust accordingly if need be. Hopefully this becomes something that Zwift continues to expand on and the turntable/lazy susan accessory purchase is justified and doesn't just become a paper weight down the road.
    Great review as always Shane and thanks for getting this up so quickly!

      @@gplama That last bit is reassuring, especially after my 2nd to most recent IRL MTB ride where I got a little cocky after about 30 minutes of successful riding at one of the more popular ranch trails here in Central/South Texas and ended up endo-ing on a 2.5 ft drop, landing on my head and shoulders about a foot from a pretty prodigious rock that, had i hit, would not have made for a very rest of my day. Didn't sell the mtb after that experience, but let's just say i was quickly reminded of my mortality at that moment. Looking forward to no endo-ing and more single track from Zwift in the future. Will test out Repack tomorrow when that Kinetic turntable gets in from Amazon!

    Nice. Kinda makes the new smart bikes look less smart though. I imagine the Kickr bike would be entertaining on the course but I believe the bars won't move? But the price tag of the bike makes that a non-issue for me ;)

    Any chance on reviewing the Tax Neo steering frame?

    If the steering setup is wrong I take it would load up the rear drop outs big time if the bike does not move like a Core does.

    Would a Kirk Kinetic Riser Ring work with this? Even with a first gen Wahoo Kickr? Or would I damage my bike frame?

      Yes, but I'd tilt it as shown.

    • @jspaceman71
      @jspaceman71 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with Kirk Kinetic's product line, but I just realized there are two versions of the Riser Ring, a fixed one and a rotatable one. I would need the rotatable one obviously and some way to angle it. Maybe a small wedge of wood to hold it at an angle.

    • @Chader9
      @Chader9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jspaceman71 for a 73* head tube angle on a typical road bike, you want to incline the turntable 17*.
      For any other head tube angles, simply subtract the HTA from 90* and the result is the turntable angle:
      Ex: 90* - 71* HTA = 19*

    Interesting. Do you think the phone needs to be mounted fairly close to the steerer tube, or would it still work being mounted further out front (which would create more of a waving motion rather than a rotational motion)? I would prefer to mount it out front to reduce the amount of sweat dropping on it, and being able to keep my towel on the bars.
