"2020 has been one of the most extraordinary years that most of us have known or indeed will ever live through. However, when future generations look back on this year, it will not only be remembered for the tragedy of a worldwide pandemic - it will also be seen as the time when ‘alternative’ forms of communication came of age. Alongside this increased activity, and against a background of the complete cessation of live performances, we’ve seen a wide range of musical performances distributed on the worldwide web.
It was back in May that I was privileged to be asked to write a few words about Mostyn Theatre Organ Productions’ first release ‘We Got Rhythm’ which featured Keith Evans and Will Shaw at the console of the magnificent Allen GW4 digital theatre organ installed at Keith’s home. This audio album was released on TH-cam and attracted worldwide attention from a legion of music lovers hearing a fresh approach to this musical medium. This first album came about when both musicians were experiencing an enforced domestic lockdown along with the rest of the UK. Move the calendar on to the Autumn, and it brought with it both another lockdown - and another album!
‘A Theatre Organ Christmas’ (subtitled A Covid-19 Christmas Concert with Will Shaw, Keith Evans and Friends) contains yet more musical surprises and delights in equal measure. The first is that, along with the all-enveloping sound of the beautifully voiced and regulated Allen organ, on this TH-cam release we’re also treated to video of the performances, in a programme featuring a wide variety of familiar festive music. The second comes in the form of the ‘friends’...
Philip Leader has worked in the music industry for over four decades and is a specialist in the field of authoring software for digital keyboards. However, his talent as a performer isn’t to be ignored. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was a fine and very highly regarded exponent of both the electronic and theatre organ, Phil combines his custom keyboard set-up with Hauptwerk, running the Paramount 3/20 sample set, to provide a contrasting, more intimate “studio” sound than the GW4’s “auditorium” presence.
Miles Allen is a young California-based musician, composer and teacher. A multi-instrumentalist, his tool of choice for his contributions to this album is the Trumpet. Combining with Will Shaw’s jazz interpretations the two entwine perfectly, reminiscent of the 1980s duet performances of legends Dick Hyman and Ruby Braff.
Philip and Miles provide the perfect musical friendship to Keith and Will. The programme ranges from classics from the Great American Songbook to the most traditional Christmas carols, all presented in a fresh, exciting and, above all, thoroughly musical manner. In these excellent recordings, once again, the quality of both the arrangements and performances by all the artistes shines through like a torch - lighting the way towards what will hopefully be a happier and healthier 2021, which will see us being able to enjoy all of these artistes live. As Christmas presents go, this album is the best!"
The new concert bench and plinth were made by Andrew Willans and team, of Willans Woodcraft Ltd, Huddersfield, UK.

Phenomenal music fellas! What a way to bring in 2021 as we at Palmetto First Methodist Church look forward to the installation of a like model...right down to the "Fox Special" console casework!

Socks! I love it...now, if they can only help me play that well!

While the bonus is it provides more flexibility in the foot. The real reason is because it’s a home installation and socks wont wear and scratch the pedalboard as much as wearing shoes. That’s the theory anyway!

@@mostyntheatreorganproducti6679 I have to play--even publicly, in socks because of severe neuropathy brought on by two diseases. But at almost 72 I am having a ball. In shoes, I have absolutely no feeling in my feet. But enough about me; your talent is formidable; what a refreshing approach to the music with phenomenal harmonic development, variations in rhythm...I could go on. Look so forward to hearing more of your work.

Really enjoyed that guys! Super sounds and great playing on the GW4 and the Hauptwerk 3/20. I'm going to have to steal some of those harmonies! :) Hope to get up to see you at some point next year and getting my fingers on that wonderful Allen! All the best to you all, have a wonderful Christmas and let's hope 2021 is much brighter for all of us!

As always, it was a wonderful concert! One aspect that I really love about your playing styles is that BOTH of you guys possess an original approach to the instrument. More to the point, I don't really recognize any borrowing or influences from organists past. That being said, I CAN occasionally hear Buddy Cole or maybe Johnny Seng in Keith's jazz chops. His choice of chord progressions and registrational colors are definitely familiar to my jazz ears but other than that, a totally original approach. No overt George Wright or Reginald Dixon (Blackpool) influences here! Which is definitely fine by me because like country music, I can only take the Blackpool school in small bites! Conversely, I could listen to Bryan Rodwell all day! 😆🎶 Regrettably, until you guys released your first concert several months back, I had never heard of either one of you! But thank heavens you've made it on the scene. I was hooked from the first couple of notes! I'd even go so far as to say both of your talent/artistry ranks right up there with the likes of Simon Gledhill and Richard Hills! The additional selections on the 3/20 Paramount virtual were a nice added bonus. Loved the trumpet solo's as well. Reminded me of Johnny Seng and Bobby Hackett on Dream Awhile! Everything was stellar. Also I really enjoyed your high recording level. So many virtual organ concerts these days are recorded at lower volume and I personally like to have the "being there" sound in my headphones and the volume on my phone can only go so high. Anyway, I look forward to listening to it again and again in the next couple of days. If the first concert had been released on LP or CD, I would have worn grooves in the playing surfaces by now as many times I've listened to it! Cheers Guys! 😉❤️

Is it a Hauptwerk organ? It says Allen Gw4. A converted Allen maybe? Which sample set?

Thanks for watching. All of the information is in the description. There are two different organs featured in this production. The Allen GW4 and the Hauptwerk Paramount 3/20.
