My brother owned both of these bikes. The CBX on his 17th birthday then the 1300 when he was 18, back in 1980/81. The engine notes of both are still very vivid in my head, but hearing and seeing them together is just awesome. Great video.
Looking at performance specs of the time, the two bikes ran nearly neck to neck in the quarter mile, with the CBX just edging out the KZ1300 by a couple tenths of a second. The KZ1300 has 15 more HP and 22 lb/ft more torque than the CBX. But the water cooling added more than 100 pounds of additional wet weight to the KZ1300 which made things break more or less even.
Mark If memory serves me right the z1300 was 0 to 60....3 sec. The one thing i didn't like ( CBX ) was the tricky cam chains Cam to cam then one to the crank . Soon goes of tune.
@@Mr75044 I have seen claims for both having 3.0 second 0-60. And just like all the claims by average riders their V-Max could do high 10's, I would say "not with you on it". Hey, it's called the CBX because it's closer to a 1000cc =X, not 1100 Plus 24 valve against a 12 valve. True the 12 valve is liquid cooled, but so does twice as many valves. One was a sport bike the other one was painted like one. 81 And 82, was a sport touring bike shaft drive with the mono shock. However the 79 and 80, with twin shocks, or shorter, theoretically allowing you to lean less at the same speed. I saw very few naked kz1300 s. Most of them cruise around like motorhomes, with drivetrain lash from the shaft. Just saying........
As a multiple CBX owner since 1984 that street raced against all of the superbikes of the 70's, 80's, and early 90's, until retiring my early production (built in May of 78) 1st CBX from that abuse, I can say the CBX was noticeably quicker and sounded better than the KZ, but the1300 had 5 mph more top speed in stock trim. The later CBX engines (ones built with the spiral cylinder studs) didn't make as much peak horsepower as the early ones, though. The CBX's performance was also very sensitive to overheating and it would quickly overheat in any kind of slow speed operation in traffic.
I remember my friend Billy hall had a Z1300 kawasaki, I had a RD350lc at the time, I couldn't believe how heavy the Z1300 was, rare beast as well, the cbx was an amazing bike to see, that big wide 6cyl unit, bikes had character back in the 80s
