in the low areas I would use chopped strand mat cloth and alternate layers of woven cloth finishing with woven, this gives strength to the repair for lateral stress

I watched a video a while back. The Body man said he was going to file some filler off. First thing i thought of , is why dose he call that cheese grater a file. I'm shure he probably calls it a cheese greater when he's working in the shop , without the camera's on. I've used the term since the late 70s. Thanks for another great video.

Nice job, seemed to have skipped a couple of things though, like 1) how/what did you do/deal with the overhang where the fiberglass mat was past the edges. 2) did you do any prep to the cured cured fiberglass prior to applying the filler.

Sorry about that. The edge was cut off with a cut off wheel (die grinder with 1/16" cut off wheel) - then sanded with a rubber block. The fiber glass was prepped by block sanding it with 40 grit and a rubber block. any low areas were sanded also with 40 grit before applying the filler. Glad you liked it.

Good job. How did they break it there?

    • @LakesideAutobody

I had it in the car when I fixed the quarter - got pissed because I couldn't find a small part to the trunk that I should have put in the parts bucket. The front seat wouldn't go back so I could look to see if I put it on the floor mat. I rammed the seat back with a few choice words and voila! Broken trim piece :)

Lakeside Autobody , I love it when I do something like that and break something! Always say to myself " well that was real bright"! Lol! Tom

Awsome. I never seem to leave good enough alone. I’ll spread some filler and think one more pass and damn I make it look worse. Lol

It's hard to just leave it alone. It's like after you paint something - you have to keep going in there to look at it and mess something up in the process :)

show us the finished paint job.. i remember seeing a part you didn't fill enough so no doubt there's a huge pit at the edge of the job.

When you repair a crack like this you should cut the cloth on the bias so that twice as many of the fibres cross the crack. The way this repair was done has half the fibres adding nothing to the strength of the repair.
