People do not hate Alia. What they resent was her being offered films on a platter and strings pulled by her Godfather on her behalf at a time when she was new and awful. Even you have agreed in your Highway review that her performance was below par. That was her 2nd film and she was in no position to do justice to the role. There was more of that. On top of that there was the constant bombardment via all media that 'Alia is great' when the audience could see that it was no way real. To Alia's credit, she's a fast learner and is today one of our best actresses. But that do not negate the ill-feeling associated with her beginning.
Perfectly summarised
Even if her performance was bad in first few films, she was very famous from start bcos people loved her in SOTY and that's how she got more and more roles. And even if her father did provide her roles is no reason to hate her. So it's not justified
I really liked her in Highway even though I found her okay in SOTY. It has not been universally established that she was bad in Highway, and she has kept getting better ever since. A serious director, such as Imtiaz does not offer roles to just about anyone because of a famous surname. He does because he sees potential in an actor.
And also, Alia Bhatt worked because people wanted to see her. It's a business after all. It's the prerogative of the producer and director who they want in their movie. It's their money, and they will make decisions they think are right, to recover their costs and make profit. If you don't like someone, don't watch them. This hue and cry about nepotism is hilarious and logically flawed.
In Highway, she was good. The acting and screen presence worked for me. Her childlike nature suited the role. There is something that works in her charm and naturality. And yes as aman mentioned, Imtiaz Ali chooses his actors based on something he sees in them.
About SOTY, even though people comment about her performance in soty, that was the exact way she was expected to portray the role. Watch any hrithik, kareena movie of a similar style, ull see that the best actors were made to act like that depending on the direction and yes they did much worse than alia. One issue was that they overacted but the main thing is that it was expected of them. By SOTY standards, she did justice. She was expected to do a role similar to Pooh in k3g. And there r people who loved Pooh's role(not me)
I think we give Alia a hard time just bcoz her behavior is a little loud and seems of a different class even though she doesn't intend to come across like that. And then we immediately correlate that to nepotism.
I think alia is a better actress than others cause she is more adaptable and more diverse in her performance , and it's not like Karan made alia , alia did very different movies where there was no Karan.
Zoya and Imtiaz - two non-commercial directors and Kabir Khan - an out-and-out commercial director. No wonder he thinks Salman is the one who can cry at any moment, as he only works with him. That was laughable, Kabir
literally cringed so hard watching that LMAO salman of all people... okay

Unlike Zoya and imtiyaz who didn't know him closely.
And even if he doesn't act well he might be an easy crier.

You can't name one good crying scene from his filmography, or even just a good scene for that matter. Also, if he was an easy crier, it'd have been visible on screen, which has never been the case

I want to watch the intro and its not like I am offended. It just doesn't leave a good taste is what am saying. Whether you, them or anybody else agree with me, either way, I had to say what I felt.

@@knrkiran you know Karan. All he cares about are mass box office collections and good looking people. To him actors like Pankaj Tripathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are on a different universe. Being able to act and emote appropriately are the the last thing on Karan's mind. All he cares about is that you look good, are liked by the public and preferably have a famous surname.
Priyanka is always so undervalued/appreciated in Bollywood. She’s the most versatile actor of my generation by far, as evidenced by the fact that she’s one of the only actresses( probably only) to have a Filmafare award in 5 different categories, a national award, and a Padma Shri( India’s highest civilian award), and yet, she’s almost consistently ranked at the bottom or closer to the bottom of these lists. Part of me thinks it’s because she’s an outsider, and unlike Deepika, she wasn’t introduced next to a Khan, and maybe even pure jealousy, as evidenced by people like Kareena Kapoor making fun of her when she moved to Hollywood, or some other actors making fun of her Barfi performance. You’ve got to be kidding me by saying that Alia is better than Priyanka😂 I’m sure she doesn’t care any more though, because she has worldwide recognition, and the rest of her contemporaries are still doing the same things.

They all kept Sushant Singh Rajput out of their top 3 list, and found Varun Dhawan better, not because he is a better actor, but simply because he is a close friend, being the son of David Dhawan. In some earlier episodes as well, guests have often named Varun Dhawan and even Arjun Kapoor (another close friend, related to famous actor, filmmaker) in their top actor lists, despite both of them being terrible actors. Also, Karan Johar did not find it necessary to put Rajkummar Rao in in his top young actors list. One can clearly notice a bias here, and the guests playing it safe to keep the host happy.

It’s tough being a director in Bollywood you have to follow the “Gangs” in this case KJoker Gang otherwise it’s hard to make a film. That’s why the answers are always the same eventhough Alia is a shitty actress whose father is on the “Suicide Gang” (murdered young actresses or actors who doesn’t come from a well known families & called it “suicide”). The Bhatt family are cruel & so is she despite acting all happy & funny I give her good acting for that. Sushant, Jiah Khan, even in the past Parveen Babi her uncle was involved on her death & claimed she’s crazy when that is not true!Wonder when justice will come to end all their ugly laughing faces when they are involved in so much bullying and murder cases yet kept being ACQUITTED.

Alia is definitely got talent… but if you watch her acting closely- there is a repetitive pattern I see in how/what she does. I have heard her interviews- she says- acting is reacting. Well- when you start off- acting can be reacting; but if as your grow as an established actor; acting should actually change to reinventing our self (for the character) for recreating (for the audience). Thats what Daniel day Lewis does. That is what theatre background people do- like Nawazuddin or Manoj. Thats how as actors, one tries to push themselves. She is young… so lets see…
