I went to Wilkins Elementary School, graduating 8th grade in 1956. At age 10, I started working on a Twin Pines Dairy milk truck on the way to sschool getting dropped off a block or two from school and running the rest of the way. I still have movie footage of my graduation from Wilkins. Great memories from that time in Detroit. Back then, every house was full and life was good.

@@untouchableraider1960 Wilkins closed over a decade ago, this news report is ancient. It's finally scheduled to be demolished this summer. The blighted houses shown around the school have all been removed long ago, but not much revitalization has hit that area yet, it's half empty. I used to live close by on Houston-Whittier, same story. Cleaner and safer and quieter now but not a ton of investment yet.

Nobody from Detroit can afford to do this. Trust me. Don't listen to what you see on the news. Crime has kill'd all hopes and dreams here. My day payed 100,000 for his house and when crime forced us out it was worth 4,000 in good shape. he had to give it to the city to pay the tax on it and someone moved in and burned it to the ground. Crack and ignorance killed Detroit. You would be terrified to be in these neighborhoods. That is why everybody left.

I'm not sure there really is an answer as the city continues to decay and die even after all the different plans to try and change the path it's been on for so many years. Sad ..... feel for Detroiters they are still proud of their city and they are good folks.

I think the homes that can be saved should be given to families who would like to move closer to the School. They can take what they need, if its there, from the derelict homes, to help refurbish their new homes. Then clear the other buildings and have food allotments and wild and play areas. I love seeing Documentaries about Detroit. Its a City which failed because Humans shouldnt live in Cities....but instead of becoming a Ghetto its got the chance of becoming many Villages connected by Nature. I have always felt that way . No disrespect to the people who seem to feel that growing trees / crops will flow into waterways .I grew up in Detroit in 1956 .When people who moved out of a house left it - the trees grew just fine , with the changes of season - some of those apple and pear trees grew to over 3 1/2 stories . The peach and the plum trees did well also .And that was in yards with no home occupants . Big - thick heathy fruits .You don't need all of that soil chemical - they will grow well .Maybe some manure if you want with some organic skills and it will happen .To add to that ---- look at the freaking weeds ! They are a hint of the soils fertility.Plants are growing on some roof tops with no assistance . It can happen .

Danto Furniture is making Detroit better one building at a time. Giving of their own resources to contain the blight and prevent crime is the first step to improving a problem in Detroit. In many areas of Michigan such as Detroit, Flint, Jackson, Adrian, and other cities you can find abandoned homes and buildings. Whether the building sits abandoned or boarded up, it clearly sends a message to corporations to look elsewhere to relocate their business. Millions can be spent improving a city, but with abandoned buildings and homes the message is clear.

Options such as creating a code enforcement program in the city must be used (see code enforcement program on Fort Wayne Indiana website). Also the federal government has fund to rid blight (Detroit is receiving these funds). Tearing down old ruined properties is only a quick fix. The blight is not on the properties, it is the people blighted thru abandonment, neglect, discrimination. Establish training sites in this area to put those without college (even high school dropouts) to learn thru "Hands on Training". This area is a goldmine of opportunity to enlist/employ people that can be trained in the construction industry to: nail, hammer, saw, demolish, plant, bulldoze, operate cranes. If a building is worthy of rebuilding, train a man to shingle, plumb, cement, install, plaster, resurface, landscape these properties. It is a re-purpose of something blighted. Take this neglect and turn it into a place of training. It is what the federal government did during the depression by hiring people to build the national parks, dams, military installations and interstate highways.

Couldn't do a car wash fundraiser. I see it all the time for the football teams. I know it is the cities job, but this is a problem in many of these communities. It is always someone else's problem. A child could have been raped and murdered if the news hadn't come and I guarantee it would still be open if the news didn't come. Come on parents you see a need make a way. I don’t really see the point of ‘cracking down’ on scrappers. All it does is reduce the cost of demolishing and disposing of the buildings when they finally get around to it. I know it’s not ‘the right thing’ to do, but why stop someone who’s poor and desperate from selling the scrap metal they can salvage when the city has basically abandoned the properties? Detroit is so far gone. They need to pull their heads out of their asses and focus on what’s relevant to their current predicament. Taking a hard line with scrappers and places that pay cash for the metal is asinine at this point. Too little, too late.

    • @allenklingsporn6993
