When TheSkepTick said that the Bible is wrong because of age of the universe sciencey-type things, I immediately dropped 2000 years of archeological evidence for Jesus’s existence and became an atheist. I bought a fedora and decided to debate many Christians on R/atheism (Non-Christians scare me) I tip my fedora to you, fellow SkepTick!

If you read this, keep in mind that I was a very cynnical atheist 5 years ago, and now am an Orthodox Christian. Here are some of the reasons, relevant to what you commented. My aim is not to convert you, but to show that believing this stuff is not as unreasonable and silly as many atheists think. If you are actually interested in Christian theology, and its deeper cosmological and ethical meaning, I can write a surface level explanation in another comment.
The earliest copies of the New Testament that we have discovered are from 50-100 A.D. Thats a few decades after the life of Christ (which was also recorded without detail by non-Christian historians of the time, such as Josephus and Tacitus, who only described him as a magician and an outlaw with followers). Almost all New Testament scholars and historians agree on this fact.
Additionally, the contents of the modern, translated New Testament are considered 99% accurate to the original manuscripts, with virtually every change being a change in grammar or spelling of names. This has been also admitted by the atheist New Testament scholar, Bart Ehrman.
Also, regarding the "flawed translations argument", I am Greek, and Ancient Greek was the first language in which the New Testament was translated back in 80 A.D. Trust me, the important stuff are the same, but some words have been translated a bit inaccurately (like the word "meek" in "blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth").
Most ancient historical sources that we have regarding ancient events were written more than 100 years after the events that they describe (meaning that whole generations would pass before the events were finally recorded by someone, which reduces the validity of the source). For example, the earliest historical documents about Alexander the Great are form 100 A.D, but Alexander died 400 years earlier, in 300 B.C. But we still consider these sources mostly credible. Again, the New Testament was written very soon after the events it records, with people from that generation still being alive to record the events they saw.
An additional fact pointing towards the credibility of the source is the persecution and execution of the disciples, the ones that originally started Christianity, and of the early Christians.
They were hunted, torured and killed for their faith in Christ. Many people die for lies they have been told (example a radical Islamic terrorist with a suicide vest), but the disciples were the ones that originally "made up the lie". Would you die for a lie you created? Paul, the man that brought Christianity in Greece and Rome, used to be a persecutor of Christians before his conversion, and later suffered the same fate as his victims. He knew what horror awaited him for spreading his belief in Christ, but still did it. The early Christians had nothing material to gain for their faith other than pain, hatred, mockery, and death.
This only scratches the surface of reasons why you should at least consider the possibility that the stuff in this book might actually be true. God bless

This is a good example of how some creators use their production techniques as a distraction and a shield behind which they do not need to engage with the actual arguments. Its as if they think that because arguments are presented in video form, it is sufficient to make a "better video" but not better arguments.
Gaslighting is not argumentation. Have we not learned this from our current political climate? This joke of a response is enough to show the lack of intellectual seriousness and actual truth seeking from atheists.

This exact scenario has happened to me so many times. I've debated so many atheists in the youtube comments that literally don't know anything about philosophy. How can you at all claim to be an atheist with 0 knowledge or understanding of philosophy?
Science is their only epistemology.. even when most of the time they are ignorant of science also haha
Philosophy relies on faith, not evidence. If we can’t accept the “you need to turn your brain off and have faith,” then we’re not going to do the same for philosophy either. There’s still no evidence for the truth of either.

SkepTick’s video got recommended to me. The only notable thing about it was that it made me feel nostalgic, but not the good kind. 14 was not a good age for me. Also the production is common, using a character, it’s not always bad, but the rest of it is reminiscent of those channels that endlessly repost videos like “Top 10 Times Animals Saved Other Animals” or “You WILL NOT BELIEVE What’s INSIDE This FISH” and there’s some paid narrator reading a script.

I was decieved by those babbling fools as well at 14. Took me until i was 17 years 11 months to realize i was wrong. The horrible path these reddit athiests set me on ended up putting me in a mental hospital, ruining my dream of joining the military. Im so glad i met a Christian in that hospital who shared the gospel with me. Im 19 almost 20 and ive been all over the place in my walk with Christ but because of Kyle ive come to realize Orthodoxy is the truth. Thanks for sharing this commeny

I’m going to try to tell a short story.
I’m a contractor, we are rebuilding a house that was mostly destroyed in a fire.
the home owner came by and told us that the house was haunted. She told us about a suicide that took place and then showed us an occult symbol that was inscribed on one of the basement walls. Ok, I made the sign of the cross and will be discussing this with my priest.
The plumber is an atheist, he is working frantically to give reasons to the symbol and the “haunted” stories.
On his way up the stairs from the basement one of his employees (and a fellow orthodox Christian) accidentally touched his hand from behind him 😂…
He turned around white “I know this is a joke but this stuff kinda freaks me out”

When they try justifying the claim God doesn't exist by saying "there's no evidence for God" that's equivalent with saying "all the facts I see don't require God as a metaphysical pre-condition" which is equivalent with saying "God doesn't exist." So they're just repeating the same claim in different words, circular reasoning.
We already know they believe God doesn't exist. We're asking them how they determine that to be the case, and they just repeat the same claim in different words.

This reminds me of an online discussion I recently had with an atheist who asserted Jesus was pure fiction. It went like this:
"Why do you say Jesus is fictional?"
"Because the Bible is full of miracles (which _obviously_ don't exist), and there's no evidence outside the Bible. And the Gospels were written decades after he supposedly lived, so they're unreliable."
"What about the pagans and Jews who wrote about Jesus and didn't question His existence?"
"Forgeries."
"Prove it," I said.

"OK...then do you deny the existence of Mohammed, or Alexander the Great? Their biographies were written even longer after they lived, like centuries later, and are full of miracles and other extraordinary things. People like the SkepTick saying that you need to able to think on your own never realize that the reason as to why God gave human beings choice is because love isn't love if it isn't genuine. More importantly, him saying you need to able to think on your own forget that Jesus says anyone who is angry toward a brother is guilty of murder and there are only legal deterrents stopping people from doing that.
I watched his video! I left a comment on it telling him how bad his points are for pretty much every single thing he said. One of my favorites is when you say "that's not an argument", he says you saying that is ALSO not an argument and thus should be thrown out of the conversation, and yet him doing the exact same thing (saying it about you) SHOULD stay in the conversation. He absolutely embarrassed himself and I told him so, it's sad that the people who watch his comments don't see this.

Studying Church History & Continuity. Jesus established a Church united for first 1000 years. Until Great Schism when the West (Roman Catholic) Split away because they were changing the faith.... I have lots of videos on Why I Left Catholicism For Orthodoxy / Catholic vs Orthodox. Catholic Church changed the faith, Orthodox Church did not change...... Then the Protestant Reformation happened in 1500s & taught a new theology (very wrong). I agree with what you said about Catholicism that's what I was raised in too when I was growing up. Based on the research I've done, the Catholic Church seems to be compromised and they have been for a long time it seems. So I agree Catholicism is not the way to go. Anyhow thanks, I'm leaning toward Orthodoxy or Calvinism or just remaining non-denominational fundamentalist Bible-believing Christian.

But I brought that up to Matt Slick (a Calvinist) and he said that's a common misunderstanding & they do believe in Free Will. But his explanation seemed like he was just denying his own Calvinism in the process.
I don't know, overall I agree with you. Calvinism doesn't seem right. It seems like it could be a demonic deception catered toward trying to take advantage of human's inability to understand our Free Will combined with God inherently possessing the truth value for all truth claims.
Molinism seems like it may be the way to go, many people forget about that option.

It's like because he chooses to believe the Bible is fiction, he assumes Christians must agree that it is fiction no different from Shakespeare's plays, which means Christians should feel foolish for believing in the Bible. But he hasn't given a reason for us to believe the Bible is fiction, he just expects us to make the logical leap with him. Typical atheist argumentation. They seem incapable of seeing things from a different perspective. "I assume in my ignorance that I'm right. Why aren't you just accepting that I'm right!? 😡"

I believe that god created the universe and then the big bang happened (the big bang is the expansion of the universe not the beginning) the original Hebrew bible starts with "when god created..." Which means that there was something before that time

@@esthermontoya5399 The question he’s referring to is about the passage where God hardens pharaohs heart. God only does this after pharaoh persecuted his people after being asked to stop 7 times. God will seek you out and even allow you to reject him many times. But eventually if you continue to sin and reject him your heart will harden and it will be hard for you to come back from that. Not impossible but hard. That’s why it says God hardened his heart and not that God struck him down and sent him straight to hell.

You argue against atheists badly, you need to lean into their ignorance. Ask them questions such as “which christian authority said that?” “Where is that in the Bible” etc. they are dodging your points so you have to drop it because it builds their credibility in the eyes of their viewers. These people value “intellect” but not in the way a normal person would understand it, they value the appearance of intelligence, men in labcoats with goggles dipping chemical drops into beakers and people with funny hair cuts scribbling equations on white boards as people marvel. So you need to demonstrate that these people aren’t like that, they actually don’t know almost anything (in majority of cases) about the faith.

Just because Heaven’s gate’s 900 members killed themselves because they thought they would become one with an advanced alien society, does that prove its existence? Are you claiming that no other religion or belief has ever had martyrs? You can die for what you think is the truth. That doesn’t mean that is actually is.
If even one of the Bible’s stories is wrong, you can not use the infallibility of the Bible as any sort of proof. Unless of course you ignore the ones that aren’t factual, cherry pick which verses you live by and ignore, or claim that the devil or whoever is temping you whenever things in “THE PERFECT GOD’S PERFECT WORD” simply don’t add up.
