If you like that beachy chunky highlights you use less of the holes and pull more hair out of each hole your going to use. Keep in mind that if your holes your using in the cap are too close to each other your going to have a lot more blonde in that area because you just pulled hair through two holes to close to each other.. Once you've pulled your desired clumps of hair through each hole you want to use. You take a fine tooth comb and run it through the hair you pulled out. This will pull those loops of hair that came out but didn't fully come out of the hole. That is why girl #1 in Brad's video had the light spots/dots at her part. A loop got highlighted that she didn't pull out with the rest or that her bleach is too runny. After you use the fine tooth comb, get your brush and do the same again so that you make sure you pull out all the hair through the holes. Once you've done that. You've got hair under the cap that your not going to bleach in the back. Put that in a pony tail and tie a bag over that section if you fear that you might miss your hair in the back and get the hair you didn't want to bleach. Mix your bleach make sure it's thick and pasty so that it doesn't run. Your going to put a plastic bag over your head so it's not going to dry out, so make it thick. Keep in mind that light hair looks lighter then it really is under the bleach so wipe a little off when you check it. If it looks light and not orangey or yellow then it's ready. Rinse it in the shower with cap in place. You can even wash it before you take the cap off but what I do is add conditioner to make your hair soft after I've rinsed it so that the cap doesn't pull on your freshly highlighted hair which has become delicate. You get less breakage if you do that. Pull cap off then wash and condition hair. If it's not highlighted enough then in a month or 2 do it again. I'm a natural blonde but since I've gotten white hair now that I'm older. I have to dye my roots when they grow in white. The ends are very blonde, kind of ombre. I often highlight my hair with streaks from a cap or I just highlight it in layers or darken it with layers and foils. If you've highlighted it and pulled too much through that you've got to much blonde, you can do a reverse cap dye not bleach job on it. I did cap highlights in the 90s because it was affordable and looked okay once the polka dot bleeding at the root grew out. Thank god for stylists and foil highlights today!
I'm 61 and love your videos! I'm old enough to have attempted to get highlights using a RUBBER highlighting cap (like the old school swim caps). Simply having my hair pulled through the holes of that cap was excruciatingly painful to the point of tears. I had to tell them to stop a little less than halfway through. When we removed the cap, most of the hair that was pulled through was still in the cap! My scalp was painful to the touch for a week! 😳😳
@@miyukuchan22 well for 1 we never used the tie on caps. They don't work well they don't get tight enough on the head. The rubber caps that reseal we also did not put a plastic bag under. We dusted the inside with baby powder as well to make it slide on easier. We also when using the hook watched how we were pulling the hair because you want to get the hair from that area not from an inch further back. We didn't worry about pulling it all the way out till we did the head. We used a comb to get the hair all the way out. Around the ears we would use our hand under the cap to protect them. Just some hints.
@@Tradewinddoxies haha okay. I mean eventually Brad also knew that everyone was doing it at home. So he guided them whilst making some 🪙! Over the last two years I’ve been doing everything at home! COVID hasn’t left India
I’ve had luck as well. I think it’s the people that use Saran Wrap and it’s it applies pressure which pushes the bleach into the holes causing bleeding.
And he was all "what good examples? I've never seen good examples" like 10 seconds after he admitted that when he did it on Miss Mannequinn it looked good! I think most examples I've seen (that weren't totally ruined for reasons not related to the cap, like the second video) look really nice. Particularly when you make the highlights only a few levels lighter than the rest, it can look super natural and pretty and sun-kissed. I work at a salon, and the new stylists/apprentices usually do my hair (for free), so I know first hand - the things an experienced stylist sees, I do not. I just got my hair done, and one of our teachers examined my hair from like three inches away, explaining to my stylist "see how this side doesn't match? And see that empty gap?" Of course, I'm starting to panic, thinking I'm finally going to regret being a guinea pig, until I see a mirror - all I see is that I'm blonde now, and darn, I look pretty cute! 😂I can see what the stylist meant if I really stare, but honestly, I wouldn't have noticed. That said, I'm not picky - that's why I'm the (now blonde!) guinea pig. 😊
I've done it before. It's actually how I first did my hair years ago. The trick is to get someone to help you as they can see what's going on and to make sure the hair rests on cling film between the cap and your hair to ensure the colour isn't sitting on the cap to reduce bleeding risks. It *can* look good and it's a good option for those looking for a subtle change.
My aunt used a highlighting cap during the pandemic (it actually didn’t turn out too poorly, idk the sorcery she used) and she made my uncle do the back… if only I could have been a fly on the wall for that scenario 😂😂
I’ve only had a cap high-lightening work out for me twice out of 4 times and now I haven’t touched any bleach in 3-4 years now 😌 And I haven’t cut my hair in 8 years since it was fried from a horrible hair salon 😭 But I have learnt from Brad to trim my own hair!! ❤️
In high school and I did a successful cap highlight! My best friend did them for me (I’m 28 now) and they came out really really good. and funny enough she (the best friend that did my hair) is actually is one of the best stylists in my area now! She’s a blonde/balayage specialist. & She’s amazing. So maybe that’s why it came out so good, lol. We were only like 16 at the time!
Brad this look on you is killer! Also just wanted to say that I’m so happy for you and all of your success! I’ve been watching you for years and every time I hear you have a new product, platform, project I’m just so happy for you 💛
I learnt about the cap highlights and my teacher who's a hairdresser recommends to use this on short hair because it may be harder to do foils on short hair that can be lightened with this method. It all depends on preference and I like this method so there we go 😅 We all have preferences
Hahaha not even the first time either! Haha he did a video when he was still platinum blonde where he did tiny hairpin curls in his hair and I still say he looks like Mugatu's son. 😂😂😂

I was sooo frustrated when I saw the results of the second girl. I don't know what is worst...? Doing it and getting a shitty result or wasting so many hours and money only to look pretty much the same as you did at the beginning.
@@yoojinslife Oh, no need to apologize! You are such a beautiful young lady! The majority of us who have bleached or colored our hair in any way have made mistakes and/or ended up with undesirable results (usually more than once). I certainly have! 😃
The latter one for me, my natural hair color is basically black so in my case I would have been livid seeing my bleaching and time consuming hair dying time gone to waste.
@@yoojinslife girl we’ve all done it, don’t feel like you have to apologize to anyone on behalf of your own hair, time, and money! You tried something new, and it didn’t go exactly the way you planned - I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve done that! Sending love and light your way 💕
Silver and grey is one of the hardest colors to dye - you have to get your hair to platinum first, and that's really hard for most people to do at home. I'd be concerned that anyone who carries a grey color for home use will open themselves up to really bad reviews, just because it's such a difficult process.
I've done highlights this way many times and it always turns out good. I always do super thin hair straps and i bleach each piece separately, keeping good sectioning going. I'm also careful not to go all the way to the root so that bleeding doesn't occur
My mom is allergic to bleach so of course a couple of years ago she insisted on having bleach blonde hair. I used one of those caps but tried to pull every single hair out of the holes. We did it two times in three days, it took forever BUT it worked and she didn't have any allergic reactions because the bleach did not touch her skin or scalp!
My mom is allergic to it too but if she even smells it, she'll start having a reaction. Basically if a store is cleaning the bathrooms, she gets the hell way to the farthest end of the store.
The second girl is so pretty! Even though so she spent all that time, at least her hair didn’t come out as badly as the first girl and she was satisfied.
I've had all kinds of colors and my worst dye experience involved cap highlighting! Way back in high school I tried it once. My mom did them and I ended up with 2 blonde strands on either side and a whole wall of blonde in the back 😂 We ended up getting box dye from Walmart at 2am lol; dyed over it with a light brown and it turned out sort of a dark caramel. Thankfully it was decent-ish in the end, but I've never used a cap since!
Dear dark hair people! You need 3 processes to lighten to blonde. You can't do it in 1 or even 2 applications of a OTC bleach product. I'm Native American with very dark hair, but I think black will act the same as mine. ) After the 3rd lightening, you will most likely have to tone it. Be careful not to strip it too much. Just prepare yourself to do that when you start. It is a project.
I'm a hairdresser, but basically retired. I went to cosmetology school in the early 80's so cap highlights were the only way I learned then and did them for years! Just like any other aspect of doing hair there are a lot of things you learn over time, and l apparently got pretty good at them because I had a lot of return clients for highlights! When you do videos that involve cap highlights l always wind up laughing because I'm thinking No Brad, that's not true! instead of agreeing with you the way l usually do!!
I actually had great luck with cap highlight kits in the past, especially the L'Oreal one in the silver box - it actually comes with a lavender toning liquid. It really all comes down to where you pull the hair through. I would do more of a "balayage" type look (before I even knew what that was). I would work from the bottom up and pull through every circled hole until I got to my ears - then I would pull through every other circled hole on the sides and back. I pulled through very sparingly on the top. I would put plastic wrap on the exposed hair on the bottom and combed the pulled hair to best prevent bleeding. I always got so many compliments on my work - how natural it looked, how the tone suited my skin tone. I no longer have the time or patience to go through that process, but if I did I would definitely do it again!
I'm most likely NOT your target demographic ( I'm over 70) But I watch you, am subscribed. Since the the late 60s I used those caps until the late 80s...with beautiful results. My 'stylist' was my very patient husband. He did a great job countless times over the years. We divorced, stayed friends and he continued doing my hair. I had natural darker blonde hair and it was very long and thick. When I went to a salon ( yes, they used THE cap) they had 3 people pulling my hair. Omg...the pain. My husband was far superior! Anyway....I went completely natural from the late 90s until today. You are right, it physically hurt & it was time consuming but I only needed it 2x yr. My husband was a saint & I believe that was integral to my/our/ his success. I loved seeing these, it really brought back a lot of memories.
If you saw the stylists in my area, you'd do yours yourself like I do. 🤣 they are all seriously so awful. Everything turns into a mullet, and not a good one, like an achy breaky mistakey mullet.
When you don't have money for the salon and are determined to try something new, then you find all sorts of courage. Back in college, I wanted to dye my under layer pink and was a bit scared because I had virgin hair that would need to be bleached. I decided to go ahead and while it wasn't perfect I absolutely loved it!
I do my own hair, I’ve been to stylists in my area and they screw up my hair every single time. So I just do my own. Have been for many many years. I’ll never waste money at a salon again. I KNOW my hair. They don’t and have proved it many times.
In The 90's this cap method was so common here where I live, that my two aunts who went to stylist school had a class about it. One of them was always using the cap to do highlights, they were pretty good actually.
If you have the correct cap, correct fit and know what you are doing, you can have an amazing highlight. I've actually seen such horrible lines and bleeding created with foils. When it comes to bleach and color, you just need to know what you are doing!
Yes. I have fine and long hair, so the foils always moves all over and because they slide since they are too heavy, I never get to the roots which is where I need the retouch. No hairdresser uses caps any more because they want to make things fast... I also damage much less my hair without foils... I go to the hairdresser once year, I am never satisfied and after I go home and fix it myself with my cap...all the hairdresser try to make highlights but it always looks like balyage
Brad Mondo unintentionally giving reckless human beings unnecessary confidence to make poor hair choices. I love it. "Brad Mondo says..." Like. He also said DONT. But, okay.
About 10 years ago I graduated from 2 years of school in hairdressing and followed up with two years of practical work/working in a salon ( by no means a professional but experienced). And whenever I bleach someone else's hair I use foil, but I always use a cap on myself. I suppose I'm lucky that my natural hair is dark blonde and I have just finessed were to pull out the hair on my head. (I am in a different profession now.) It is just too much work doing roots on my own head with foils. But I absolutely agree, foils over cap any day. Btw, love your videos, been watching them since the very beginning

@@omnisurgedarkspeed6835 basically saying there’s nothing special about us because we’re all special 🤣
Exactly, so there's no need for anyone to hate anyone else for things they can't control.
Not saying anyone was, just throwing it out there.
I always love to say, “crazy is normal and normal is crazy”
I'm 61 and love your videos! I'm old enough to have attempted to get highlights using a RUBBER highlighting cap (like the old school swim caps). Simply having my hair pulled through the holes of that cap was excruciatingly painful to the point of tears. I had to tell them to stop a little less than halfway through. When we removed the cap, most of the hair that was pulled through was still in the cap! My scalp was painful to the touch for a week! 😳😳
I should not laugh, but Brad is feeling mighty in the outfit today and it's showing haha. Love this quirky man's attitude.
I went to cosmetology school in the 80s so I learned with a cap. I can do a cap and do it well but I was professionally trained.
Tell us your secrets!
Maybe you can upload some TH-cam tutorials! We’d like some guidance :)
@@ekisharajendran6083 the guidance is have a professional do it.
@@Tradewinddoxies haha okay. I mean eventually Brad also knew that everyone was doing it at home. So he guided them whilst making some 🪙!
Over the last two years I’ve been doing everything at home! COVID hasn’t left India
I don't understand how this highlighting method ever turns out well lmao
Same lmaoo
It always looks like some seriously disturbing noodles xd
Its easy. Its how we did things back in the day
A lot of visualization and planning
Saw a girl at school who did it, it looked "eh" to me. She seemed to like it though so it pleases some people.
I like how Brad says ""Sometimes"" at the beginning of the video 😂
Thank you Brad for being so great! Your videos are so light hearted and so wonderful to watch. Thanks for the positivity!
brad always makes us feel so pretty even on our worst days. thank you brad
At least second girl’s hair didn’t look bad in the end, even if unchanged. And she still had a smile on her face!
I love how Brad inadvertently taught an entire generation to bleach the ends first
I’ve been a hairdresser assistant for 4 years and a half and I’ve been listening to you ever since you make my days🥰🥰💕
ive done cap highlights like 15 times since i was a preteen in the 00s. every time it looks great! i think im a cap highlight MASTER
I agree - I always had good luck with a cap!!
I’ve had luck as well. I think it’s the people that use Saran Wrap and it’s it applies pressure which pushes the bleach into the holes causing bleeding.
@Cat M. Please do mine :)
@@KaritaGR Exactly -- only use a loose plastic cap
I've done it before. It's actually how I first did my hair years ago. The trick is to get someone to help you as they can see what's going on and to make sure the hair rests on cling film between the cap and your hair to ensure the colour isn't sitting on the cap to reduce bleeding risks. It *can* look good and it's a good option for those looking for a subtle change.
My aunt used a highlighting cap during the pandemic (it actually didn’t turn out too poorly, idk the sorcery she used) and she made my uncle do the back… if only I could have been a fly on the wall for that scenario 😂😂
My husband used to do my pull through cap back in the day! He was sooo gentle with the hook! It NEVER hurt! And looked great too!
Brad is literally killing this whole look!!!😭😭🥵
In high school and I did a successful cap highlight! My best friend did them for me (I’m 28 now) and they came out really really good. and funny enough she (the best friend that did my hair) is actually is one of the best stylists in my area now! She’s a blonde/balayage specialist. & She’s amazing. So maybe that’s why it came out so good, lol. We were only like 16 at the time!
Brad this look on you is killer! Also just wanted to say that I’m so happy for you and all of your success! I’ve been watching you for years and every time I hear you have a new product, platform, project I’m just so happy for you 💛
You can tell Brad feels his looks and plays the part and I live for it
watching the first girl
"they got us in the first half, not gonna lie"
Lmaoo this is exactly my reaction in a nutshell😂😂😂😂😂
I learnt about the cap highlights and my teacher who's a hairdresser recommends to use this on short hair because it may be harder to do foils on short hair that can be lightened with this method. It all depends on preference and I like this method so there we go 😅 We all have preferences
Brad looks like he stepped outta “Zoolander”...specifically, as Will Ferrell. 😁
Yasss thought the same too 😅
Hahaha not even the first time either! Haha he did a video when he was still platinum blonde where he did tiny hairpin curls in his hair and I still say he looks like Mugatu's son. 😂😂😂
Yes! Mugatuuuuuu
THATS WHAT I THOT
I always get Vampire diaries' Damon vibes from Brad and this outfit+makeup was really the cherry on top. Like twins!
I am a mom who did this, first for myself, then my daughter. Always came out flawless! Tip... do not fish around ..in- out, in-out..don't puncture your head, in-out.. did I say NO fishing! It's a mom thing. We got thus down!
I was sooo frustrated when I saw the results of the second girl. I don't know what is worst...? Doing it and getting a shitty result or wasting so many hours and money only to look pretty much the same as you did at the beginning.
im sorry 🥺
@@yoojinslife Oh, no need to apologize! You are such a beautiful young lady! The majority of us who have bleached or colored our hair in any way have made mistakes and/or ended up with undesirable results (usually more than once). I certainly have! 😃

Brad needs to add silver to his collection of colors! There are no decent ones that non proes can get their hands on!
Yes that would be great! But also I do like the semipermanent silver/gray from Herman's :) it doesn't stay for _that_ many washes though
I know right? That would be awesome
T18 is crying
Silver and grey is one of the hardest colors to dye - you have to get your hair to platinum first, and that's really hard for most people to do at home. I'd be concerned that anyone who carries a grey color for home use will open themselves up to really bad reviews, just because it's such a difficult process.
He said in one of his videos that he hates when people dye their hair grey, so I wonder if he would do that…
I've done highlights this way many times and it always turns out good. I always do super thin hair straps and i bleach each piece separately, keeping good sectioning going. I'm also careful not to go all the way to the root so that bleeding doesn't occur
I feel like this is the best way to go
I’m absolutely loving everything about Brad’s look. My favorite so far.
I did this the other day and it literally took me four hours pulling my hair out of the stupid holes. Turned out good though 🤣
Brad! I'm loving this "Dune-space-villain-priest" look you have going on.
I have a "British priest reacts" video suggested right under this video so I think TH-cam agrees with you on the priest part 😅

That's cool, mabey it'll work for me
Good child 🤗
My mom is allergic to it too but if she even smells it, she'll start having a reaction. Basically if a store is cleaning the bathrooms, she gets the hell way to the farthest end of the store.

@@chelscara that's so nice of you to say, thank you!
The second girl is so pretty! Even though so she spent all that time, at least her hair didn’t come out as badly as the first girl and she was satisfied.
I am loving the “Disney villain holding an adorable little floof” moment
I’m just like “yeah vampire brad” i like it
I've had all kinds of colors and my worst dye experience involved cap highlighting!
He has the whole Damon Salvatore thing going on! 😙
Spent ages looking through the comments to see if anyone else thought this! 😍
@@xKittyKills totally agreed.😆
That’s what I saw too!
Brad "where have you seen these successes?!"
Also Brad "I did cap highlights with success"
In beauty school. On a mannequin.
I only ever tried a cap on a mannequin and never ever on a human😆
Starting at 5:07 was hilarious! I had to replay it a couple of times 😆 also his hair colour/style and makeup are on point in this video! 😍
The first 10 seconds 😂
Me: “ well hello lord Voldemort”
You: starts making whooo oooo aaahh sounds
Me: “or okay Tarzan”
😂😂😂😂
I'm a hairdresser, but basically retired. I went to cosmetology school in the early 80's so cap highlights were the only way I learned then and did them for years! Just like any other aspect of doing hair there are a lot of things you learn over time, and l apparently got pretty good at them because I had a lot of return clients for highlights! When you do videos that involve cap highlights l always wind up laughing because I'm thinking No Brad, that's not true! instead of agreeing with you the way l usually do!!
OMG I used to use these all the time before I realized how much better it looked when I went to my hairdresser
I'm most likely NOT your target demographic ( I'm over 70)
But I watch you, am subscribed.
I’m fascinated by people’s faith that they don’t have to go to a hairdresser and can do it themselves
If you saw the stylists in my area, you'd do yours yourself like I do. 🤣 they are all seriously so awful. Everything turns into a mullet, and not a good one, like an achy breaky mistakey mullet.
The hairdresser fucked up my hair so no ty, I do a better job
When you don't have money for the salon and are determined to try something new, then you find all sorts of courage. Back in college, I wanted to dye my under layer pink and was a bit scared because I had virgin hair that would need to be bleached. I decided to go ahead and while it wasn't perfect I absolutely loved it!
I do my own hair, I’ve been to stylists in my area and they screw up my hair every single time. So I just do my own. Have been for many many years. I’ll never waste money at a salon again. I KNOW my hair. They don’t and have proved it many times.
“Where have you seen these successes? I’ve been around the block a few times.” Thank you for your commentary, your faces, and making me laugh.
In The 90's this cap method was so common here where I live, that my two aunts who went to stylist school had a class about it. One of them was always using the cap to do highlights, they were pretty good actually.
8:47 - “What do you want from me?”
Gave me full on Adam Lambert and Brad Mondo weird collaboration vibes and I was HERE FOR IT.
I am officially OBSESSED with your style. 🪦
Brads lookin extra fine fulfilling all our high fashion punk fantasies
If you have the correct cap, correct fit and know what you are doing, you can have an amazing highlight. I've actually seen such horrible lines and bleeding created with foils. When it comes to bleach and color, you just need to know what you are doing!
Yes. I have fine and long hair, so the foils always moves all over and because they slide since they are too heavy, I never get to the roots which is where I need the retouch. No hairdresser uses caps any more because they want to make things fast... I also damage much less my hair without foils... I go to the hairdresser once year, I am never satisfied and after I go home and fix it myself with my cap...all the hairdresser try to make highlights but it always looks like balyage
brad looks like he belongs in twilight today and its really making my day
That blazer is everything, it must become your signature outfit, the cruella devil wibes are real

But he also says live your best life! Lol, for some that's cap highlights, if they can get it to work!
Loving the Lost Boy movie look today
About 10 years ago I graduated from 2 years of school in hairdressing and followed up with two years of practical work/working in a salon ( by no means a professional but experienced). And whenever I bleach someone else's hair I use foil, but I always use a cap on myself. I suppose I'm lucky that my natural hair is dark blonde and I have just finessed were to pull out the hair on my head. (I am in a different profession now.) It is just too much work doing roots on my own head with foils. But I absolutely agree, foils over cap any day. Btw, love your videos, been watching them since the very beginning
The last time Brad said cap highlights were a bad idea, a girl did it and he was so shocked because it came out so well. Soooooo, I have hope in this video 😂
That first lady saved me the trouble of ever buying a cap to highlight, yikes! But it came out really lovely... looked like a ton of work, and pain!
