I must have watched the highlights of this test hundreds of times but that's the first time I'd noticed England scored 175 runs in just the evening session. Quite phenomenal.
Great innings by Botham. But, I have to say I've always admired Ritchie Benauds' commentary. Always unbiased and always gave credit were it was due! durring the Ashes series.
Botham changed the psychology of English cricket. If you listen to the commentary you will hear the preference for defensive, low risk cricket, which clearly wasn’t working
Wonderful to see again . I was in a hospital waiting room for the arrival of my daughter . Botham , magnificent , Dilley , fantastic . I think Chris Old's 29 after Dilley got out was crucial and hardly shown on this video , just one boundary 4 shown out of that valuable 29 when he stayed with Botham .
Also the fact that Bob Willis hung around long enough, on 1, while Botham piled on the runs. It was a magnificent show by Botham and the England tail end. A rarity in England batting performances.
Though this match is chiefly remembered for Botham's innings, not enough credit is given to Dilley - who started the counter-attack - and Old, whose crucial 29 has been almost forgotten.
@ Ankit - Oh, undeniably. I remember watching it and thinking that it was the most hostile spell of fast bowling I'd ever seen (and it's still in the top three). I also remember the gut-churning sensation as Lillee and Bright put on thirty-odd and threatened to snatch the game away at the last minute... With Test cricket capable of producing matches like this, it is still a mystery to me why those limited overs travesties are even permitted.
lomax343 well I wasn't even born den... But show his spell later and Just wow... No nonsense thing just go out der bowl fast look into the eyes of the batsman & go back to the mark... Those time bowlers made the bowl talking rather than the tongue :)
lomax343 test Cricket is the best cricket...I think cook is such an underrated legend... The best test batsman in the modern era just let his bat do the talking scoring runs everywhere in Asia Australia Wi South Africa Nz ... ❤️❤️
Absolutely...Botham's partnership with Dilley was worth 117 and with Chris Old 67...then a further 37 with Bob Willis, who made 2 and then bowled like a man possessed...😚😊
Also, I like still be batting at 6 o'clock comment. Really though, he was probably thinking a quick biff by Botham and an innings defeat and we get a day off tomorrow.
@@BigAL0074 It was at the Perth test in 1979, Australia v England, also famous as the match where Lillee started off with a tin bat (actually it was aluminium) which went "plonk" every time he hit the ball with it.
Just great,, I and Sonia watched this in 1981!

Mate,
many, many thanks for the upload ...took me back to when I was 18 and just joined the services, ten of us crowded around a tiny portable tv!

bob taylor the best wicketkeeper ever to play for england
Fantastic performance by the late order batsmen supporting the legend that is Ian Botham in his prime.
The opening shot shows bob taylor not the greatest bat ,but what a keeper still keeping in tests at 40 odd immaculately

lomax343 even after all that bob willis with his tail up .. picking up 8 wickets ....... What a spell that was as well

Famous knock by Botham, but also, Dilley was seeing it like an airship that day. Giving Lillee the long handle like he was a minor counties trundler!
7:36 A nice knock from Peter Willey too. Here he goes into full on God mode with successive boundaries. Great to watch.
The days when a straight ball from Terry Alderman bamboozled the cream of english cricket.

It was so prophetic!
Dilley hit the s*** out of the ball square
Well, Botham and Dilley thought. If we are going out? Then go out in a blaze of glory.
Was Lillee ever caught Willey, bowled Dilley ?
the bowler was Holding the batsmans Willey just after tea one time
true, look it up!! it could have been the other way round but still FaF :)
Yes

Hard to belive this is nearly 40 years ago.
What no helmet beefy
No, nor did the great Viv Richards.
