- Drummer Billy Ward expatiates on the development of jazz drumming, with demonstrations of the technique of the major icons of the style. From "Voices in My Head." Fantastically informative and fun!
I posted this video out of pure admiration; hopefully it will encourage more people to buy the DVD.

I'm a metal-type drummer but this amazes me. It's such skill, yet it's a feel for the instrument. Jazz drumming is just a groove that no other genre can compete with. It really is being one with the kit.
Wow, that was astounding. So many styles for one man to have almost mastered!
His Elvin Jones was unbelievable!
It's great to watch someone who has spent sooooo much time paying attention to the details and can then regurgitate the information technically. Bravo. This type of video should be part of the curriculum for every history of jazz course given. I would love to see this type of setting with different instruments.
Billy, you're awesome. Such a perpetual student, and wonderful teacher of the art. Thank you!
Billy is such an underrate drummer - which in my opinion
Is top notch - I remember purchasing modern drummer magazines because of his articles in the early 2000’s.
His Elvin impression is super awesome.
Excellent, a journey through time. I played a lot as a younger guy, then came the day job, but only for about 25 years. I'm retired now and have a room dedicated to a Yamaha electric set and I would like to get good. At age 65 I hope it's not a pipe dream. Back then in the 60's, 70's we didn't have the internet. What a tremendous resource. Thank you for taking the time
This guy is pretty amazing that he can emulate so many variations of jazz, as interpreted by the masters over the many decades. Would love to learn from someone like this. Unfortunately no jazz teachers where I'm at. :(
jazz drumming is one of a kind, just shows each genre of genre is extremely hard and have their own hard parts to fill. Im mostly a metal drummer but jazz has taught me a lot of great fills and grooves and its great to not limit your playing style and throw different elements in.:)
This is so cool and awesome
Wonderful player and his kit always sounds incredible.
He's just amazing.
wow!!!!Billy Ward is the best drummer and the best teacher!!!He keeps the fire burning...
this is a great clip! and yes, jazz is the gratest music ever! i like metal n some pop music but jazz has an almost spiritual effect in my life. kudos to all those jazz followers!!!!!.
I met Billy in the guitar center ..Its like I knew this guy for soo long..Love his easygoing
attitude to be approched. Great Plaer ..
Great educator and player, so smooth with the left hand and drum to drum transitions
Billy has such great taste
Thanks for uploading this. You are right. I'm a big jazz fan already (and Billy Ward fan) , but these kinds of uploads will definitely push me toward purchasing more of Billy's work. Thanks again. Scott
YA GOTTA LOVE BILLY! ALL THE TECHNIQUE AND LOVE ONE COULD OWN!
YEAH BILLY BOY !
Buy his DVD you wont regret it. I did'nt like Elvin Jones the first time I heard him on youtube, but now that he explains it, I now see what Elvin's playing is all about and so are the other drummers' style. And the more I understand that I have a long journey ahead of me.
Billy I love your style and approach..its so addictive..your tone choice..cymbal choice..FUKIN awesome drummer..we need more billy ward..another dvd is due man..cmon.
Awesome video! I feel like I got better just by watching it!
wow that was awesome,i was looking for some jazz drums to sample from & this is pure gold especially the brushes
With you there, buddy. I LOVE metal but I also love and adore jazz drummers. I'm actually getting into jazz, hence why I'm here. ^~^
The only bummer about this video is that its not long enough and we didn't get to see him demonstrate more cats
I'm so glad everyone likes the vid!
No list of seminal jazz drumming performances is complete without Footprints, from the second Miles Davis Quintet's album "Miles Smiles." Tony Williams on drums; probably my favorite performance of his.
If you dig Max Roach, check out Duke Ellington's "Money Jungle."
Great sounding ride. Great video also
That was an unreal press roll!
that snare sounds AMAZING!!!
@NPC919 this level of skills is something that can be acheived through LISTENING to the drummer he mentions... I ran over to my cd collection and immediately started reviewing the sounds of all these drummers... he totally gets them to the T! listening and imitating the sounds are the best way to improve tone, color, musicality, groove, everything, man
That was very good and the kit is sweet too.
Those Glitches are GREAT!!! reminds me of Autechre! Big Up!!
Great stuff Billy!
A joy to watch
If you're referring to the big cymbal to his left, that's actually a ride with a smaller cymbal (like a crash) stacked underneath it for effect.
Love this video!! thank you!!
Love that low tuned snare.
your a jazzzzzzz master the energy and expression is amazing

Good job! Very nice vid!
he really knows what hes talking about! Great vid
I'm a heavy metal lover for some 40 years now.......but I simply adore a good jazz drummer. This guy is great. I like jazz drumming 500% more than metal drummers. I guess thats why I like bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Jimi Hendrix soo much. The drummers are highly influenced by jazz.
Little is known about Samuelson before he joined Megadeth. It is known that he and Chris Poland played in a jazz fusion band called The New Yorkers, and that before this, both practiced and played together for many years.
OMG fantastic!
I want more!
awesome technique. love the accenting with the hi hat, il use that one now haha
love your style! Thats the sort of drumming i play.... but badly! Give me something to aim for! Really smooth drumming :)
I think he is the only drummer to demonstrate Elvin and get closer than all the others.
Amazing... I learned alot..
Yes, really great vid. His Elvin impression (full kit part) is great. And he shows how musical Max really is. Someone mentioned Tony down below. (I want to see the next few minutes of this vid!) Anyway, IMO, Tony's best work is on Wayne Shorter's "Soothsayer" from the mid 60's. That album also features what I think is the best ride cymbal sound EVER. It's a different recording situation than the mid-60's Miles stuff, and the cymbal's essence, and his technique, really come through.
Fantastic.
@GuitarSlinger151 im one of those kind of guitarists. jazz drumming and drumming in general is absolutely fascinating.
Thanks for the info
the tom sounds so nice
I'd have loved the video to continue for another 25 mins... Amazing
I love how no one's flaming on Barker on this vid yet XD Amazing video!
wow he's so talented!
Dang I thought I was clickin on a video with drummer Bill Ward of Black Sabbath LOL
HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!
Great! Thanks.
awesome video... jazz drumming rulez as hard as any other drumming... or even more... :)
this dude is AWSOME and i mean it
My only complaint: Papa didn't really begin moving to the ride cymbal until after Kenny Clarke showed up in the bebop scene. Papa checked Kenny playing the ride, and decided to do that as well. Kenny moved to Europe shortly after all that, so Papa is often credited for that, but really it should go to Kenny Clarke (not to mention that this is arguable, but thats what I've been told many times by many different cats).
this guys really good.
ride is amazing.
@chiron68 I was thinking the same! It's so amazing!!
@drummercafe
Great! thanks for the info mate!
shit, im addicted to jazz now cos of this video.
@1971SuperLead Mitch Mitchel (from Jimi Hendrix) is a blues style drummer. A jazz style and influenced drummer would be John Bonham (from Led Zeppelin) :)
This is really making some sense :)
"Free for All" is one of my favorites when it comes to Blakey
Yes the last drummer he spoke of was Tony Williams.
God Billy Ward is so cool
'Great interpretations...You 'smoke!'
very informative
nope, pretty sure its K constantinople by zildjian. not sure which one it is but they say ziljdian on the bottom, and they sound like constantinople
@ZackPomerleau pretty sure the main ride is a High definition ride, K custom
:O i need to learn how to do these!!!!
3:24 almost first time in my life I got a feeling "I wanna learn to play jazz."
Guy is gr8!
You can clearly see the Zildjian logo under it throughout the video at various points...
@1971SuperLead I highly recommend you listen to Animals As Leaders, FUGE, Vildhjarta, and Exivious....let me know what you think man
1:17 that is the coolest groove almost sounds like whiskers...
those are good choices :)
@dontdodat00O I'm jazz bassist, my drummer play this technique...I love his beat, in fact, Charlie Watts of Rolling Stones play matched grip
@leftpuman Yeahh, with the pad and the rudiments it gets a bit tedious, it's hard not to be so. Just normal drumming is where it starts to feel real good. Then when I start jamming to music I get lost in it. I normally just stop either because my backs hurting or I don't want the neighbours to attack me :P
what ride is this? anyone knows? i just love the sound of that
THE PRO!
ride looks like sabian "artisian" vault series.. anyone know if thats right?
gar samuelson was a jazz drummer, wasnt he?
@Orancube it's called comping. get john riley's art of bop drumming, listen to a bunch of jazz (he recommends a lot of great stuff in there) and welcome yourself to the next dimension.
i like his drumming teqn.. and how he shows of the way other drummers play. not only that he is a owsom playr him selv .drumming should be intertaining. and he did .now on you tube is a drummer no you tube .dond know him at all you got to see this guy play his name is fon morcus. one of the best as show drummers .he is a older guy in his 70sssss dond go by his age go by his showmenship.
bravo
can someone tell me some jazz bands or drummers plz. i wanna listen to some good jazz music with good drum beats and solos.
Is this guy related to Black Sabbath's Bill Ward. Whether or not he is, I want to meet them both, lol.
"he's like a bonham of jazz..."
more like John Bonham is "an Art Blakey of Rock"
