I'm a metal-type drummer but this amazes me. It's such skill, yet it's a feel for the instrument. Jazz drumming is just a groove that no other genre can compete with. It really is being one with the kit.
It's great to watch someone who has spent sooooo much time paying attention to the details and can then regurgitate the information technically. Bravo. This type of video should be part of the curriculum for every history of jazz course given. I would love to see this type of setting with different instruments.
This guy is pretty amazing that he can emulate so many variations of jazz, as interpreted by the masters over the many decades. Would love to learn from someone like this. Unfortunately no jazz teachers where I'm at. :(
Excellent, a journey through time. I played a lot as a younger guy, then came the day job, but only for about 25 years. I'm retired now and have a room dedicated to a Yamaha electric set and I would like to get good. At age 65 I hope it's not a pipe dream. Back then in the 60's, 70's we didn't have the internet. What a tremendous resource. Thank you for taking the time
jazz drumming is one of a kind, just shows each genre of genre is extremely hard and have their own hard parts to fill. Im mostly a metal drummer but jazz has taught me a lot of great fills and grooves and its great to not limit your playing style and throw different elements in.:)
Billy is such an underrate drummer - which in my opinion Is top notch - I remember purchasing modern drummer magazines because of his articles in the early 2000’s.
this is a great clip! and yes, jazz is the gratest music ever! i like metal n some pop music but jazz has an almost spiritual effect in my life. kudos to all those jazz followers!!!!!.
Buy his DVD you wont regret it. I did'nt like Elvin Jones the first time I heard him on youtube, but now that he explains it, I now see what Elvin's playing is all about and so are the other drummers' style. And the more I understand that I have a long journey ahead of me.
Thanks for uploading this. You are right. I'm a big jazz fan already (and Billy Ward fan) , but these kinds of uploads will definitely push me toward purchasing more of Billy's work. Thanks again. Scott
@NPC919 this level of skills is something that can be acheived through LISTENING to the drummer he mentions... I ran over to my cd collection and immediately started reviewing the sounds of all these drummers... he totally gets them to the T! listening and imitating the sounds are the best way to improve tone, color, musicality, groove, everything, man
Billy I love your style and approach..its so addictive..your tone choice..cymbal choice..FUKIN awesome drummer..we need more billy ward..another dvd is due man..cmon.
I'm so glad everyone likes the vid! No list of seminal jazz drumming performances is complete without Footprints, from the second Miles Davis Quintet's album "Miles Smiles." Tony Williams on drums; probably my favorite performance of his. If you dig Max Roach, check out Duke Ellington's "Money Jungle."
Little is known about Samuelson before he joined Megadeth. It is known that he and Chris Poland played in a jazz fusion band called The New Yorkers, and that before this, both practiced and played together for many years.
Yes, really great vid. His Elvin impression (full kit part) is great. And he shows how musical Max really is. Someone mentioned Tony down below. (I want to see the next few minutes of this vid!) Anyway, IMO, Tony's best work is on Wayne Shorter's "Soothsayer" from the mid 60's. That album also features what I think is the best ride cymbal sound EVER. It's a different recording situation than the mid-60's Miles stuff, and the cymbal's essence, and his technique, really come through.
here is a list of cd's to get you started! Miles davis-kind of blue(jimmy cobb) sonny rollins-saxophone collossus(max roach) John cOLTRANE-blue train(philly joe jones) art blakey&jazz messengers-moanin'(a.blakey) oliver nelson-the blues and the abstract truth(roy haynes) miles davis-four&more(tony williams) mccoy tyner-the real mccoy(elvin jones) dexter gordon-go(billy higgins) buddy rich-big swing face(b.rich) horace silver-horace/scope(roy brooks) hope you like 'em!;)
I'm a heavy metal lover for some 40 years now.......but I simply adore a good jazz drummer. This guy is great. I like jazz drumming 500% more than metal drummers. I guess thats why I like bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Jimi Hendrix soo much. The drummers are highly influenced by jazz.
My only complaint: Papa didn't really begin moving to the ride cymbal until after Kenny Clarke showed up in the bebop scene. Papa checked Kenny playing the ride, and decided to do that as well. Kenny moved to Europe shortly after all that, so Papa is often credited for that, but really it should go to Kenny Clarke (not to mention that this is arguable, but thats what I've been told many times by many different cats).
@1971SuperLead Mitch Mitchel (from Jimi Hendrix) is a blues style drummer. A jazz style and influenced drummer would be John Bonham (from Led Zeppelin) :)
@leftpuman Yeahh, with the pad and the rudiments it gets a bit tedious, it's hard not to be so. Just normal drumming is where it starts to feel real good. Then when I start jamming to music I get lost in it. I normally just stop either because my backs hurting or I don't want the neighbours to attack me :P
@Orancube it's called comping. get john riley's art of bop drumming, listen to a bunch of jazz (he recommends a lot of great stuff in there) and welcome yourself to the next dimension.
Guys, serious question here. This level of skill is something that can be achieved through practise? I'm currently on an hour a day drumming and my dream at the moment is to be this kind of guy :L Reckon I need to up my times ? :P
I'm a metal-type drummer but this amazes me. It's such skill, yet it's a feel for the instrument. Jazz drumming is just a groove that no other genre can compete with. It really is being one with the kit.
Wow, that was astounding. So many styles for one man to have almost mastered!
His Elvin Jones was unbelievable!
His Elvin impression is super awesome.

This is so cool and awesome

Billy, you're awesome. Such a perpetual student, and wonderful teacher of the art. Thank you!

Billy has such great taste

Wonderful player and his kit always sounds incredible.

I met Billy in the guitar center ..Its like I knew this guy for soo long..Love his easygoing
attitude to be approched. Great Plaer ..
Thanks for uploading this. You are right. I'm a big jazz fan already (and Billy Ward fan) , but these kinds of uploads will definitely push me toward purchasing more of Billy's work. Thanks again. Scott

Great sounding ride. Great video also
With you there, buddy. I LOVE metal but I also love and adore jazz drummers. I'm actually getting into jazz, hence why I'm here. ^~^
I'm so glad everyone likes the vid!

wow that was awesome,i was looking for some jazz drums to sample from & this is pure gold especially the brushes
That was very good and the kit is sweet too.
If you're referring to the big cymbal to his left, that's actually a ride with a smaller cymbal (like a crash) stacked underneath it for effect.
your a jazzzzzzz master the energy and expression is amazing
That was an unreal press roll!
Great stuff Billy!
Love that low tuned snare.
awesome technique. love the accenting with the hi hat, il use that one now haha
@GuitarSlinger151 im one of those kind of guitarists. jazz drumming and drumming in general is absolutely fascinating.
Little is known about Samuelson before he joined Megadeth. It is known that he and Chris Poland played in a jazz fusion band called The New Yorkers, and that before this, both practiced and played together for many years.
A joy to watch
that snare sounds AMAZING!!!

The only bummer about this video is that its not long enough and we didn't get to see him demonstrate more cats
I'd have loved the video to continue for another 25 mins... Amazing
Love this guy!
I love how no one's flaming on Barker on this vid yet XD Amazing video!
I want more!
