I agree with your verdict. The reason Kewpie tastes mustardy is because they add vinegar and MSG. The other distinction is egg yolks that allow it to solidify when heated as with a dish like dynamite. I also grew up on original Best Foods and had come to really like their olive oil variation. Kraft makes a very acceptable alternative in the olive oil category. Dukes uses superior oil to all of them and borrows some of Kewpie’s features including the addition of vinegar (which gives it that “twang”) and a higher proportion of egg yolks. Kewpie uses exclusively egg yolks as far as I know, that sets it apart from the other two whole-egg mayos, probably why it tastes ‘eggier’ and almost fermented. The yolk of the egg contains natural MSG, making it more savory. Personally it’s my favorite, i always put it on my burgers

I can hear the all of the south exhale and rejoice seeing Duke’s win 😂 I think Kewpie is good but situational. I wouldn’t put it in a tuna salad or anything but awesome on a regular sandwich Hellman’s is last for me because the texture and weird aftertaste
I've only recently seen Dukes in my local grocery, I had just switched over to Hellman's after many years of just buying generic mayonnaise and didn't realize what I was missing, now it seems once again I need to try another brand and discover something else I've been missing! I have never heard of Kewpie mayo. I also grew up with Best Foods. I kept hearing how good Duke’s mayo was and finally saw it in my grocery store. I tried it and couldn’t tell much difference between the two. But I am now buying Duke’s because a bottle is $2.00 cheaper at my store.
Love me some Kewpie. I prefer real mayo for my ham sandwich tho. I mainly use it on my poke bowls, sushi rolls, onigiri, tuna salad. Add some Sriracha and it's a yummy spicy mayo, that you can drizzle over some lightly seared ahi tuna. Serve on greens or a bed of rice with furikake sprinkled on top. Looks like you got the Japanese version too! The only difference between that version and the US version is, the US swapping out the msg for yeast extract. I recommend the Japanese version, it's just umami. It's made with only egg yolks. Which is why it's so rich and egg forward. It's made with a blend of vinegars. Which is probably why your pallet was confused. US versions only usually use white distilled vinegar and sugar. Kewpie doesn't add sugar because the vinegars bring the hint of sweetness. Maybe they add mustard seeds? Because they're pretty tighted lipped about the,"seasonings" that go into it. Everywhere I look the ingredients list is always the same. Even on the website. Soybean oil, egg yolk, vinegar and seasonings. Anywho, sorry for the thesis. Btw, Kewpie has a variety of mayo flavors! They even have a mild mayo, made from whole eggs instead of just yolks. The flavor is still there. All the seasonings are the same, it's just not as eggy. You might enjoy that one a little better.
It definitely depends on the application for me. If I'm making ranch dip, it's Kraft. Super neutral, I don't really use it for anything but dips. For sandwiches, Duke's or occasionally Kewpie. Kewpie is perfect for spicy mayo for sushi and stuff, really assertive deviled-egg character. Kewpie is the only one I would enjoy straight up on a saltine. Great comparison video!

There are some recipes that Hellmann's (miracle whip) was actually better for some dishes. There is this one thing (I call it macaroni salad) that they would fix. It is elbow macaroni, some yellow corn, thin sliced deli ham, some pickeld jalapenos, some crema and miracle whip. It is one of my favorite things. Those are my choices also. However, I can't taste the big difference between Dukes and Hellman's/Best, it's almost a tie for my tastes. Making your own mayo is great too with light olive oil and you can add as much egg, salt and vinegar as you might like.
Hey, LOVED the video as much as all your others! Just so you know though, you are correct. Kewpie does contain mustard as a seasoning in the mayo. I was amazed how fast you picked that up from such a tiny taste!
Kewpie or Japanese mayo has taken my cooking to a whole new level, being in the South though we have Dukes also in the fridge. we love Hellmans too, cuz that's what we grew up with! so love all three but Kewpie is our families first choice.
You should try going to a Eastern European store near you if you have one and buy some Ukrainian or Russian mayo in these tall squeeze bags. You can get flavoured ones with stuff like garlic even and it’s a game changer plus most of them use sunflower oil which is a unique Twist. I’m sure other countries in Europe have some killer mayo too this is just what I’ve tried.
I grew up eating Dukes here on the East Coast. Always loved it. And I have been known to buy Walmart brand mayo to save money. And never got into hellmans. I kept hearing about Dukes years ago. Had to try it and it’s a winner for sure.
Don’t sleep on Kraft
Kevmo's always asking the hard and important questions
Im with ya, i think the Japanese mayo has specific applications and isnt a general all purpose thing like the other 2.
Grew up on Hellman’s, Kraft and Miracle Whip. Tried Dukes and it is my favorite.
Kewpie and dukes are pure hype .... Hellmans all the way
The texture of Hellman's is gross to me, and I grew up with it. Kewpie wins on flavor by a mile, no contest.
Hellman's has lime juice in it.... And I like the twang that Duke's doesn't have. Never tried Kewpie...😮
Yes I was thinking about dutch mayo and curry ketchup.
YES I was about to say Polish mayo 😍
I love you. Your such a wholesome dude!! I love watching your videos they make my day, or should I say night in my case. LOL.
Loves me some Kewpie mayo. Every time you bit into one of the tomato sandwiches my mouth watered…
This video was awesome. Love your channel, it's got a great vibe
Thanks for an excellent review.
Hope you're feeling better.
I grew up eating Dukes here on the East Coast. Always loved it. And I have been known to buy Walmart brand mayo to save money. And never got into hellmans. We just never bought it in our house and I never bought it when I grew up. But after seeing the Kewpie Mayo in so many TH-cam vids I had to get it when I found it at Walmart and I like it!
>>> toasted whole wheat bread, slice of cotto salami, slice of Monterey Jack cheese, and Duke’s mayonnaise. Is a southern sandwich with very nice texture and flavor. Side it with chili cheese Fritos and glass of Dr Pepper or milk.
This was nice.😊
I've tried the Blue Plate from LA, and I've got the kewpie in my fridge. My favorite and forever will continue to be the Best Foods/Hellmans... It's the greatest basic mayo, imo.. Homemade? That may be another video. 😊
✌️❤️
Can’t wait for this to blow up again and thanks for the amazing review! I personally am a fan of Kewpie. I feel like it just adds a great flavor texture and mouth feel compared to others. I can also agree Dukes is absolutely amazing especially the Dukes Garlics Aioli ufff 😮💨😮💨 so good with fries 🍟
That was awesome! I trust your judgment especially since Im a big best foods fan, in fact I wouldnt ever use anything else. That was prior to this taste test. Ive always heard of others being as sold on dukes as I on best foods but now I want to sample dukes, that is if I can get it in Ore. You are in my daily prayers Kev!❤😊❤
Would love more of these head to head videos!
Chicken salad on an tortilla chips?? My mind is blown… I want some.
I'm a Southern girl and I love Dukes but to tell you the truth I love any kind of mayonnaise
I appreciate this comparison. I grew up only eating Miracle Whip which is completely different. I’ve been wanting to start keeping real mayo on hand. Tried to get Kewpie but can never find it in stores.
Just tried Kewpie a week ago for the first time. Bought it at Costco, not huge container.
Interesting! The first time I had Dukes it brought back summer visits to my grandmothers In Tennessee. I hadn’t realized it up until that point that I ever had it before. Really brought back memories. And nice to hear your analogy do the Kewpie mayo. I wanted to try it but now that you said it tastes very eggy, I will pass. I don’t like eggs. Thank you!
I grew up with the hispanic McCormick Mayonesa with lime so that’s my go to, but I like them all!
Hello from Cali. I grew up with BF but have eaten alot of Cupie. Never tried Dukes. I love mayonnaise. I would agree with you most likely if I tried Dukes. Tks. Karla in California.
Great video! Love that shirt! Went to Dead and Co farewell show in Noblesville Indiana this past June. Was amazing
You are the best sir 🥰❤️💕
I'm a Duke's man of the three like a good South Carolina native, but Kewpie is also incredible as it's own beast. Another great brand I recommend, Blue Plate.
