  • Everyone has played Monopoly, the game where you and your friends compete to see who is the most ruthless capitalist: buying land, developing property, extracting rents from your competitors. But did you know that the original game of Monopoly - before it was bought by Parker Brothers - was in fact a criticism of capitalist greed? A new “short take” from the Gravel Institute.

Implying that the game wasn't so much telling people withing society to fight against monopoly but also saying you can start small and get rid of the landlord of the building you are living in if you mobilize with the other tenants.

The game that Charles Darrow sold to Parker Brothers (and claimed to be his own invention) was a folk game that derived from Magie's game. When Parker Brothers realized that it was a derivation of a patented game, they bought her patent and her remaining stock, sold the stock, and then discontinued the original game. (There were a few other variants that people were selling, and Parker Brothers bought them all. One of them, they kept selling for a few decades, I don't remember why.)

    This isn't exactly true. Lizzie Magie was a Georgist. She favored capitalism but with a large tax on land. Modern Georgists (aka Geoists) also support a high carbon tax, as they see the atmosphere as public property like land. Contrary to popular belief, the Landlords Game was not anti-private property, it was anti-private land. The game was meant to demonstrate the market failures that happen when an incredibly scarce commodity like land is left to the market.

    Monopoly was not anti capitalism, it was anti landlord, Lizzie Magpie was a staunch Georgist, Georgists believe in a, capitalistic market, but one in which natural resources are owned by the people.
    The biggest aspect of this was landownership, though it applied to any natural resource in limited quantity. But Georgism is anti capitalist similar to how Bernie Sanders is, it’s criticizing capitalism, but looking to reform it, not destroy it.
    It’s worth mentioning that Karl Marx hated Georgism, he described it as “Capitalism’s last ditch”

    • @blackflagsnroses6013
      @blackflagsnroses6013 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s worth noting that Marx was too arrogant to accept anything but his own ideals. His beignets gripe with Henry George was that he wasn’t socialist…. Well yeah Henry George was attempting to solve poverty from a free market anti-monopoly point. This is why libertarian socialists supported liberals like George, under actual free markets socialism could take root in a free economy where labor associates and form workers cooperatives. But monopolies, State, and corporations rig the market with interference for the capitalist class. Leo Tolstoy respected the reform of Henry George and at the very least socialists found a practical solution to land monopoly

    I was thinking the other day... In a game of monopoly every player starts with the same amount of money. If the game reflected reality the majority of the players would start the game with so little that they wouldn't be able to even think about the possibility of buying a property and would probably be eliminated on their first trip around the board.

    She was not Anti-Capitalist! She was Anti-Rentier! She was a Georgist who made her game to spread a Georgist message.
    Henry George argued that true Capitalists were the natural natural allies of Labor and that workers should cooperate with genuine entrepreneurs to help overturn the entrenched privileges of land owners and other cronies who benefited from government granted monopolies.
    George was one of the more radical Classical Liberals, closer in most ways to modern Libertarians than to Progressives, who emphasized what would come to be called the Lockean Proviso. Homesteading does not actually grant a right in perpetuity to own Land (i.e., Natural Resources) but only the products produced by labor. When Land is scarce enough that the land itself has any positive market value separate from that of fixed improvements, then the government granted privilege of preventing others from using the same land need to be balanced by a duty to compensate the dispossessed. There are many ways that could be done, but George thought that the most feasible solution was to levy a simple Land Value Tax on the unimproved value of the land (any associated buildings, crops, or other improvements would be completely tax exempt, unlike in more conventional property taxes) and use it to fund some combination of public goods (like railways) and a Basic Guaranteed Income (he preferred the term Pension for All, but modern Georgists tend to call it a Citizen's Dividend).
    At one point Henry George advocated the abolition of all forms of so called Intellectual Property, but he later moderated his position to instead say that Patents must be eliminated buy Copyrights are legitimate so long as they don;t last too long and so long as it is not too hard to claim fair use.
