I was nervous about the Man in The Suit when it first came out as I was worried the antagonist wasn't fictionalized enough to be considered separate from Haruo Nakajima, the real-life suit actor and by all accounts very nice, hard-working man. This ended up being unfounded since he's gone unnamed and his backstory is not at all related to Nakajima's. The creator is very clearly taking pains to not disparage anyone actually involved in making Godzilla films. I didn't know about this Spongebob thing, but it's clearly my fears realized and made even worse. I happened to meet Hillenberg's son once or twice and he seemed like a really sweet guy. The idea of him seeing this makes me want to vomit.

It's not even that the SpongeBob analog horror used Stephen Hillenberg's death as a plot point, but also implied that he murdered his wife (who is still alive). Using a real person's death for your crappy horror short is bad, but falsely claiming they committed a horrible act, especially to one of their loved one is gross at best, reckless at worst.

So by that Logic "Man in the Suit" is a horrid story with no redeeming factors, or is it because so much time has passed that you don't mind it when it happens in that story? I'm not trying to pull a gotcha on you, I'm really trying to wonder where the line is drawn.

THE PAINTER/URBANSPOOK will forever be a huge disappointment in terms of what could have been, because there was some serious potential for a unique series that invoked the style of a classic slasher/giallo, but instead, we got an exercise in upping the shock value ante and treating a coherent story as an optional part of the series.
Gore and shock can make for a powerful experience when done right (MARTYRS and INSIDE come to mind, my personal gold standards for extreme horror), but it’s like hot sauce. It needs to be used in moderation and not made the prime focus. THE PAINTER is like chugging a bottle of straight hot sauce mixed with laxatives.

    • @ABAShortfilms
      @ABAShortfilms  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

I strongly agree, there is so much potential that is squandered, because shock value and gore can be good if done right, I used Goodnight Mommy as an example but Martyrs also is a great example, but the painter fails at doing that mix and instead comes off as shock value due to lazy writing.

Someone is trying to make a Pinwheel Analog Horror. Pinwheel is a *REAL* partially lost nickelodeon series that came out in the late 70's/early 80's. With so much of the series lost, one could possibly make a pretty good horror story around it, I mean I've seen some of the footage and it can sometimes come off as a bit unnerving to some, so it could work...
but Nooo, let's just add some unrelated clips with poorly integrated shadowy figures and a "spooky" text-to-speech voice during the mime segment. I know budget and talent is what makes an analog horror believable but if you're dedicated enough to tell your story, and use a bit of creativity, it can still come out pretty good regardless of the amount of or lack of fancy editing.
Bottom line: A pinwheel Analog Horror could work, it just needs to have a solid story and structure.

It's a live action preschool show from the 80s and I remember watching a couple eps of it as a wee kid back in the late 90s. It's not lost media, but the animal costumes can come off as kinda creepy to some people (I'm kinda immune from the creep factor from the costumes, personally, I mean people say the Cats broadway costumes are creepy looking and I freakin' love Cats, so), so I feel like that could be an interesting starting point. All it would need is a compelling storyline.

I feel like a lot of the issues that Analog horror stems from oversaturation of the genre, nothing seems entirely original anymore, trope after trope is being introduced and then immediately become oversaturated, because of that people will feel more comfortable going overboard with shockvalue because that's what they being lead to believe will make a good story.
It's sad, it's really sad because there is probably plenty of really good and creative Analog horrors that will immediately get overlooked, because people just aren't interested as soon as they see the dark thumbnail and obscure one word title.

Its really just oversaturation at this point. When you have a small community driven by talented or inspired creators you get good material. People create these things without an outside context to restrain or deeply influence their creativity. Ted the Caver and Dionea House get lumped in with creepypasta but they were created in a world where that label didn't exist yet and thus they were created without the baggage of later creepypastas. Same goes for early analog horror, stuff like Local 58 and Gemini Home Entertainment existed in a world where analog horror didn't exist yet. Heck I remember when people just labeled them "dark media" (since creepypasta was out of vogue by then) and they were just horror series not genre horror series.
My point is that once a genre is established and proven to be popular you get copy-cats and people doing it for the fame instead of the genuine desire to create something new and creative. Ted the Caver wasn't made to cash in on some internet horror craze it was made to be a creative horror experience utilizing a new medium, and that goes for all the early analog horror as well. Internet horror in general has a cycle thats well established by this point. Early pioneers create without genre restraints, that inspires others to be creative as well while taking influences from what came before, this continues with more and more tropes being established which then go on to restrain further creative works, eventually you have the copy-cats that follow the tropes and genre conventions because the genre itself has effectively pigeon-holed itself. Any further works just add to the level of oversaturation after that point.

Slenderman started off as one of the most frightening entities ever created until so many clones were made that eventually the original horror of Slender the Eight Pages (or just Slender if anyone remembers when it was still called just that) was lost. Creepypastas were among one of the most popular forms of media with big TH-camrs at the time, Some Ordinary Gamers stand out, covering these stories to give their opinions on them, but the tropes became too many and very little originality was made for them. Analog Horror is just the next step of the cycle and, soon enough, there will be another cycle in horror. Starts off good, gets increasingly better, then the decline. Rinse and repeat.
The only take away from this continuous cycle of rise and fall is that rather than looking at these smaller stories, games, or videos series as bad because they aren't scary, we can at least enjoy them for what kind of story they tell. The Man In The Suit is a perfect example of that. It's scary, but what drives it is its story about a WWII victim being given power through a fictional character. If a series can't be scary then they can at least be what they are intended to be in the first place - entertaining.

One internet horror series that I'd like to mention thats kinda like analog horror but without the analog is happy meat farms. That series is able to tell a horror story without the use of too many analog horror cliches. I think doing online horror in a similar way to that is the next step after analog horror has ran it's course.

Analogue Horror suffers from a low barrier to entry, which is also what makes it amazing. An Analogue Horror series basically has no restrictions as to what you can do with it besides I guess sticking to that Analogue "style"
For every Spongebob Analogue Horror and Urbanspook, there's a series like Gemini Home Entertainment, The Walten Files, the Mandela Catalogue, Eventide Media Center, Vita Carnis, Greylock, Dreams of an Insomniac, the Oldest View, Doors, The Man in the Suit, and so many more series that are brimming with creativity and passion
We, as humans, will always lean towards the negative side of things in regards to... well, anything. There's a reason that there's a saying about a few bad apples after all. We get so used to the good, that whenever something bad happens, it sticks out like a sore thumb and we don't stop focusing on it.
Personally, I still think Analogue Horror is in a better spot than it has been in quite a while. Sure we'll get things that are in all senses of the word, abominations against mankind, but we still get people pouring their passion into projects they otherwise would never get to make

i remember where it all started, the fnaf tapes by squimpus(leaving the person he was discovered to be aside) made me fear fnaf when i never was afraid of the game. Then i started watching local 58 and gemini and those series tickled an old childhood fear of waking up on the middle of the night just to the white noise of the television or a static image of the tv channel with no sound and my mind just imagining seeing things in there. The best thing analogue horror has it's the psychological horror, the fear of the unknown. Now it's just pure shock horror as it seems. Sometimes we get some gems like the boiled one but it looks like the rest is a cluster of poorly made stuff. And it makes me so sad, because analogue horror at the start made me feel scared like never other media ever had, like losing sleep level.
PS: a really good analogue horror that you might've missed is dreams of an insomniac. It's pretty different and unique. I recommend checking it out

There’s a point where you can see passion vs just hopping on the trend. I mean this in all media as well. I fully agree with things melding together and no longer being appealing, a derivative of a derivative for the sake of popularity instead of passion. And I understand getting tired of it. Still, looking into things now and then is a good idea, but there's a reason I go to horror curators instead of looking for series on my own. I tend to find better quality that way.

As someone currently working on my own analog horror (Not released yet) getting crazy with the shock can get really tempting. But you need more than a few scary faces to make analog horror. you need it to be interesting, you need to tell a story, and you need a reason for why your monsters/killers are there instead of letting them exist just for the sake of shock value. The analog horror I'm making is called Hutchers Swamp. There's a few old safety tapes about how to safely explore an uncharted biome recently founded by a man named Jeremy Hutcher. A few monsters roam the swamp, some dangerous, some docile as expected from any analog horror but it won't be focused entirely on these creatures or who fell victims. the main focus isn't what's in the swamp, but what the swamp is.
Edit: If this isn't pinned I'm going to put a stray lego in front of your bathroom door before the morning.

Few projects are crazy good, launch a thousand copies, over saturation kills interest until someone does something groundbreaking, then the cycle repeats. Nothing stays fresh and fun forever, there are no breaks. People will also naturally be more critical of the 200th project than the first.
At this stage it’s just things being thrown at the wall to see what sticks. If the project crashes and burns? Oh well, maybe a lesson will be learned. But probably not for these two.

However, I think it's a bit to early to say that analog horror is actually on a decline, the presence of bad analog horror doesn't mean there arenot still artists who do put heart into their projects and who are still releasing good analog horror. I agree that the well has been relatively dry for the past months, but I'm sure there are still projects in the making that are worth waiting for and to my knowledge, and I think their's also a good chance that we'll see some of the og's make a return, as some of the stories are still not done to my knowledge. As a analog horror fan person, I think lately every series has become the same of showing a disturbing picture and a text describing and then black screen and a jumpscare. But there are some series that are my favorite that really works great by having a good story. Like The Walten Files, HMF, Lacey's games which is one of my favorites, it created a whole trope that felt original and using girlhood traumas or girls games that make it shocking for girls like me get shocked and feel connected with the protagonist or characters and how their experiences are shown as pure horror, because that's how it feels. I think analog horror is something that can be used for pure shock value or just vhs files or connect with the viewer and the story and make you scared while also seeing the art behind it.

y'know, I'm surprisingly with you on a lot of things. Mostly that the genre has felt just as starved as Creepypasta did during it's twilight years. The difference however is people trying to make a tired old format work, dragging the typical things you'd see kicking and screaming.
If people weren't so hyper-focused on doing what everyone else had already done twenty times over, and instead came up with their own unique approach, I feel like Analog horror could actually become better. I know digital horror is definitely on the rise, and that's cool and all, but I feel like the better Analog Horror series have become exceptions in an otherwise stale genre. Walten Files doesn't even feel like analog horror, and instead feels like a greek tragedy to watch.

The thing that killed my analogue horror videos is that I see that I keep falling into these traps even though it’s just two videos. They’re both cringe and they’re not even scary nor creepy. If only there was a new series of analogue horror that is actually interesting and doesn’t fall for traps that can easily lead the series to a downfall. So I do agree with what you said that people should just give analogue horror a break.

What is the source of that first clip, with a creature below the AMC sign? It's got a vibe that just creeps me out and I want to see the full thing.

Yeah, I always thought Analog Horror was dumb, except with a few good ones like Gemini Home Entertainment and Kane Pixel's Backrooms being some of favorites. But If I had to recommend the best one I have seen, Vita Carnis is the best and my favorite out of all of them. Except for those three, I don't watch analog horror.

      I’d also recommend these(some aren’t just vids):
Shipwrecked 64, Catastrophe crow and dreams of an insomniac, Freddy juniors origins part one, fnaf the crushing blow, skinamarink
I feel while yea there’s some sucky analog horror stuff, we really need to be fair in that there’s more good stuff than people give it credit for
It’s just these bad ones that overshadow the actually good ones cuz people like talking about bad stuff like it’s an addiction

There are still some new remakes of old Creepypastas that are amazing and I feel like it's going to be the same for analog horror once it gets very old, people are going to revisit it and make it better
