This is a mod I've made a few months ago and I figured you guys would appreciate it. Sorry about the thrown together release video, the skybox and HUD problems aren't part of the mod - they are the results of a poor emulator widescreen hack. It runs just fine if you play it normally. So I have question Is it possible for modders to make the same thing like in SMW with yoshi? I mean, to add "Yoshi's drums" part to soundtrack while we are riding yoshi?
I had actually dreamed of getting on top of the castle when I was still playing Sm64 ds. I wasn't watching any youtube back then and the only possible way I could was by unlocking the cannon (later by doing tricks with characters). I had to gather 150 stars for this but until then it was big dream 😂
This would have been a perfect addition for when you 100% the game. Revisiting levels with yoshi gives you way more liberty and could have been so amazing.
@@TheSidside_majorandminor SM64 was the first of its kind in many areas, Nintendo was flying blind. The camera alone was iterated on countless times. For a portion of its development they were making it with multiplayer in mind, but it didn’t pan out. The game becoming single player caused major shift in level design, who knows how much time and effort that took away from working on Yoshi. To top it all off the game was rushed. Not trying to downplay Kaze’s achievements, he’s very talented.
@@protocetid we could say the difference here is that Kaze is a single man with no budget, just a lot of time. which probably means rushing a game is the literal worst thing that could ever be done.

I remember seeing yoshi in last impact and thinking woah this was really cool, but to be honest the mechanics and controls felt odd, they way the tongue was moving was also very weird. Now seeing how good this looks, you improved so much it's unbelieveable, it looks like something nintendo themselves could've made, can't wait for what you have in store.
The only thing that's missing is the drums that play when you get on Yoshi and stop when you get off him. That seems difficult to add into the game though. Anyways, the mod looks great!
Not really tho, do you remember that in jolly Roger Bay (I think that's how the level is called) the music theme had a drum version when you went inside the cave with the treasure chests? He can probably implement that effect when Mario jumps into Yoshi's back, it'll be easy but could take long to do it in every level in the game (plus asking someone to do the music too).

It really does make up for it, DS let’s you play as Yoshi almost anywhere you want and it’s one of the reasons I prefer DS a little more than the original. Seeing Yoshi in a Bowser level gave me a reflexive reaction of "hey, Yoshi can't go into castles!" 😅 This looks amazing he looks like he was like this from release it looks so well implemented
This is INCREDIBLE, other than one tiiiiiny missed opportunity: You should've found a way to do some adaptive music, Banjo Kazooie-style. Either adding bongos to the music when riding Yoshi, changing one of the instruments, etc.

@@Godzillarex Actually that IS Yoshi himself, confirmed by the game, as an adult of course. If he wasn’t he would be a lot smaller than that. Not to mention he was always an adult since the events of Yoshi’s Island, when Mario was a baby. DS is of Yoshi’s modern design, which you see in games that came out after Mario 64 such as N64 Mario Parties, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. In the original Mario 64 it was using the older design from Super Mario World which looks a little different. I’m surprised you didn’t know about that. I don’t know much concerning Yoshi’s Story, just that they were babies and a lot smaller. The green Yoshi was either him before Yoshi’s Island even happened or an entirely different one.
Nice concept i really like it! I know theres some mario games that dont have yoshi hack/mods but this is the first time i see an rideable yoshi instead of just yoshi!

There should be a counter for how many Yoshis you sacrifice in the name of getting sweet jumps and then at the end screen, the sorrow from MGS3 shows up and makes you wade through an infinite void with the ghosts of all the dead yoshis shambling towards you eating your hp.
I didn’t realize someone did this for Mario 64!!! Yoshi’s my favorite character and I love seeing him in games! In fact I prefer the DS version of Mario 64 a little more than the original for including Yoshi as a playable character himself, something I don’t see in other 3D games! But I would’ve loved the original to do this as the reward for getting every last star, it would be so much more worth it to 100% it and I don’t see why that couldn’t have been. It’s a good thing for modding being possible!
Back when Yoshi was a cool dinosaur with an insatiable appetite and eyes that looked like he had a huff of laughing gas, this would have been my dream come true, and definitely would have been better than just having him give you a bunch of lives you probably don't need anyway. Heck, I still think this is pretty cool, though it might be better for a different mod than vanilla SM64.

IIRC Nintendo did try to make rideable Yoshi work in SM64. They couldn’t do it and reduced him to a cameo.

That would be yoshi only, which was already in the ds version

Yoshi as a playable character in the original would be really cool! It’s a reason why I prefer the DS version slightly more and play it more often
