When done using a torque wrench, you should set it to 0 ft/lb or its LOWEST setting. Leaving it with a torque reading other than its lowest setting or 0 for a long time will also ruin the torque readings.

Mine actually says to store at 10ft/lbs. Probably depends on the wrench.
Proto recommends storing their torque wrenches at 20% of full scale.
@@kennethniswonger3514 It's usually within 20% of the max torque of the wrench.
I prefer pulling up because you have more control. Especially when you are torquing 100ft-lbs or higher because if the wrench falls off the bolt, you are gonna get hurt! But good point about your back muscles!
for unlocking nuts push down and for locking nut also push down, never pull up. yes more control but if the nut its tight af and you force your back you will really feel your snipe when it unlocks out of nowhere

My father has a torque wrench just like that one, but is 30+ years old! We take good care of it, like you said never ever dropping it and never forcing too much it beyond the torque set. Works like a charm, every 5 years we take it to adjustment (just as a precaution) and it's always fine. Seriously, a very good wrench! :)

Just watched like 5 different clips on how to use a torque wrench and most of them were over 8 minutes long and confusing as f#%+. This was by far the best explanation and straight to the point. Thanks Chris !
I just replaced my brakes and rotors, so I purchased a torque wrench to get my lug nuts back on to spec. Just one problem I had no clue in hell on how to use one! You helped me so much. Just wanted to say thank you! Great video!

7Westwood, Here is what you are looking for: How to Change a Wheel Bearing (long and detailed version)
Every vehicle has its own torque specs so you will have to figure that out, but for the van in the video, that is how you use a torque wrench to torque down the axle nut. And that wheel bearing has been good ever since!

As usual straight and to the point. I was watching this one video and normally I don't say anything, but 5 minutes of talking and still hadn't touched the tool. I lost my instructions for the inch pound and had a feeling of how to use it but always a great refresher from Chris Fix.

I would like to give you one advice regarding this video:
You really should not make that second turn with the tourque-wrench. What that does is over-tightening the bolt beyond the specified tourqe.
One has to move the wrench slow and steady and never click it more than once.
If you go to calibrate your wrench, they might let you try to tighten to a specified tourqe on a test-cell wich show realtime values of what force you are applying. That is a really good way of learning some tricks on how to tighten with tourqe.

Hi Chris, I haven't looked through all the comments, so this may have already been said. But you must have your hand over the load centre of the torque wrench. If you hold your hand half way along or use a pipe, the torque delivered to the fastener will change.
I'm replacing hydraulic seals on my bass boat. Ordered parts and much to my surprise I need a torque wrench. Awesome,why not spend more money ! Anyhow this is a tool I've never used. so this video was quick and to the point. I'm getting a cheep one at Northern tools cause...This will be the only time I'm sure I'll need this fancy gadget for 3 nuts to tighten. been around 48 years,grew up on a farm. Changed tractor tires,truck tires etc...None of us ever used a fancy torque gizmo...but I need it for this job so my seals will seal properly...Thanks for the vid !

u forgot to mention that using anything other than a normal socket (like a crowsfoot ) will throw off your readings. i was also always instructed to use the torque wrench from the handle and not holding your hand closer to the head while torquing as this will also change the torque applied. very good videos and keep up the good work man.

When tighten the fastener, use a smooth even motion. Do not jerk on the torque wrench, you may make it click prematurely and your final torque may not be correct.

aseredy Thanks man! Another tip is to keep the wrench on the lowest setting when storing. You want to have a little tension on the spring, but not a lot.
-Must use free hand to place on head to maintain right angle
-Any tilt in the wrench will throw off accuracy
-Even holding and pressing on the handle properly vs holding at the butt can apply different torque
-Some instructions state to turn wrench setting to lowest and then highest and repeat 3 times before EACH use
-(when storing, turn to lowest setting and lock)
Also, i forgot to mention the most important thing about tourqewrenches:
You always have to remember to adjust it back to zero. If not, the spring inside will stretch when not in use and it will not be accurate anymore.
This goes for all tourqewrenches except a few Stahlwhille models.

Just read the instructions to make sure, not only just Stahlwille but lots of other brands too, you can even use Stahlwille as a breaker bar, people are like “why are you doing this?” “I read the instructions, have you? Now shut up!”

Thank you again for the help. I was able to gently pry it off. I just didn't want to damage the wrench, which leads me to my next (embarrassing) question. Prior to watching your video, I .watched another "how to" video that recommended oiling the torque wrench. Because my wrench felt stiff and didn't turn with ease, I thought I'd shoot some oil inside the spot where the rubber stopper is.Now, I realize this is where the wrench is recalibrated with allen keys. Have I ruined the wrench. If yes, I'll just buy another one and chock one up for stupidity. I was, however, a little surprised that the package inserts didn't outline the anatomy a little more.
Tom Johns I see no reason to oil a wrench, especially if it is newer. I have yet to oil mine and it is a few years old and still is calibrated. I would think the parts in the wrench that should be oiled from the factory would stay oiled because it is a relatively closed system that isnt exposed to dirt or water. How do you know it was hard to move? I would try and test it and see if it is still in spec. That is the only way to tell if it is messed up from the oil.
Good simple explanation. You should always turn it back to 0 setting when not in use though, as the pressure will put the calibration out over time.

Good quick instructional vid Chris. As always, viewers, remember that using an extension and / or deep sockets will throw your torque specs off slightly ( especially for HIGH TORQUE ) And lastly, make sure your surfaces are clean and rust free. Using some assembly grease will help where allowable. Rusty surfaces and nuts/ bolts will BIND, throwing off your settings and possibly causing parts to break. KEEP WRENCHIN' JK.
James Krivitsky extension does not affect torque setting, you can try 2 feet long extension on a test machine it will still show the right torque. It will only affect impact gun, because force applied is not continuous unlike torque wrenches. Do some experiments before spreading “knowledge” in public, would you expert?

Another thing to add is to wind the torque setting all the way down when storing to take unnecessary pressure off of the internal spring.

Thank you. I want to learn to change my own break pads and was concerned about putting the bolts back on the wheel.
I don't know anyone that does their own work and it seems so scary. Many videos show how to change break pads but leave out the most important part; taking off and putting on the lug nuts.
just a head's up, remember to "lock" (in this video, tighten the bottom knob" or the wrench won't click when you get to the appropriate torque.

ChrisFix you did it right. I just overlooked it and o ertorqued a sparkplug because I didn't lock it.
For the person that asked , using an extension or any kind of lubricant on the threads will change your reading. Torquing a bolt is the process of stretching the thread ever so slightly.
Just a tip, make sure to set it back to zero before you store it. It helps it stay in speck.
Most cheap torque wrenches,you throw away.Most calibration places won't even touch them.They will only do the Mac,Matco,Snap On,Cornwell torque wrenches.Includes the SK,Proto,Older Craftsman and many more USA made torque wrenches.Stop on the first click,it is torqued.Don't set it to zero when not in use,set it to the lowest setting.This is what my Matco tool dealer told me including the Snap On dealer down the road in my area.

Thanks for the video. Just a quick note regarding the wobble extensions. The Torque adjustment is different when you use an extension. There is a formula to calculate it for each wrench. I would suggest to add that to your video. Thanks again! :)
