      It does happen at lot, but much of the film is exaggerated, and any legal system rightly called a legal system would not be one in which a power of attorney can simply be imposed on someone without their consent in such a tyrannical way.

    She wasnt the anti-hero, Peter Dinglish's character was, as the audience can relate to him because his mother was put in a care home under malicious false pretenses. So his actions were justifiable in a morally ambiguous context (classic anti-hero). He wanted everything done legally and even tried to pay her off at first. Violence was his last resort (classic anti-hero). Marla's sole objective is selfish gain (classic antagonist) wanting more and more, even when others around her are getting hurt because of her selfish ambition. In the end there is a compromise where they both "win" but because she is now dead (because of another anti-hero and maybe the true protagonist of the story), who ends up reaping the benefits at the end?... Peter Dinglish's character, the anti-hero.

    • @CamberRockerCamber

      Spot on. She was clearly the villain. The anti-hero should've been the mom. Senior with a shady background but fights for her life because she was taken against her will by a scam artist.

    There not really a lot of ambiguity in this movie.... Marla and honestly Fran are absolutely horrible people that completely destroy peoples lives just to get rich. The acting was great and I liked the movie, but I hate that there’s a narrative of “boss woman takes the world by the balls” when really she spends the film taking advantage of old people, particularly a lot of older women

      @Max Roderick On the plus side, the scam is actually impossible to carry off in reality. This movie was a total fantasy and it's funny watching the director act like it's based on fact. Everything from the way the scam works to the way the Russian mob functions is total nonsense and I have no idea why people are behaving as if this is a serious critique of elder abuse when the scam in this movie could never be carried off in real life. Can you imagine having a billion dollar corporation in the age of social media whose business model is literally just kidnapping the elderly and stealing their assets? When people can gush over The Wolf of Wall Street, in which Leonardo DiCaprio's character unapologetically bends the rules, corrputs the system and enriches himself in a very stylised way with a fine chick on his side. Then why not gush over I Care A Lot in which Rosamund Pike's character unapologetically bends the rules, corrupts the system and enriches herself in a very stylised way with a fine chick on her side.
    I know the term "fine chick" is not necessarily flattering but I thought it was appropriate to underline my point.

      I think it's because guardianship scams hit a sore spot. Financial mumbo-jumbo is harder to process than essentially kidnapping someone's parents or grandparents, stealing all their money and leaving them to die. So I think Marla Grayson is more comparable to Frank Underwood from House of Cards. They're both arrogant crooks with a total lack of moral core, gaming the system to fill their pockets and rise in society.
      Also, John Oliver did a segment on guardianship scams:

      I think you're mistaking praise for the movie as praise for the characters. Wolf of Wall Street had a reasonable and logical progression of events, and you can observe how his hubris, selfishness and recklessness slowly (then quickly) eroded the system he had set up. Meanwhile in I Care A Lot, the movie sets you up to watch Dinklage guy and Marla go head to head and destroy each other. But then, they end up working together because of a sheer number of contrivances and strange character decisions. Then Marla dies to a character that gets like 2 minutes of screen time. And in the middle of all that, they keep throwing in gender jabs that feel very out of place when the movie is about conflict of mob boss vs scam artist, really just reminding me that I'm watching something that somebody wrote, not real people fighting for their lives.

    It isn’t morally ambiguous. There’s nothing ambiguous about it, it comes right out and just says don’t expect the good guys to always win in life. I wonder how many drafts were written before they settled on this. If there is any ambiguity in the movie it isn’t moral, it’s technical. Also it continues the trope of the man hating blood thirsty lesbian. These two women were absolutely despicable, this isn’t representation it’s the continuation of harmful ideas about gay people. Yes, I was definitely mad at this movie, and to see them sit here and talk about it and giggle is as dark as the movie itself. 👎

    Pike was amazing! She carried the whole movie with her strong deranged character and witty lines. Lots of surprises. It's a fun and interesting movie. • @annacreid
    @annacreid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Good premise, but wish they had given her some likeable characteristics. Cersei is a good example of what they could've aimed for, and would've been much more effective to see her actually starting to unravel in the second half then double down as a contrast to the whole girlboss hashtag expressions and stylised vaping shots in the first half. Feel it missed the mark and just made the whole thing infuriating to watch. Also terrifying that Eiza thinks there should be more female characters in film like that lol, isn't that kind of going against the entire point of the film (that replacing powerful hetero white men with gay women and black men is not going to change systemic oppression and inequality, sure as heck won't make female characters more "developed" in film by making them all unfeeling, sociopathic assassin types either...)

    • @beccareid4816
      @beccareid4816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get u but at the same time u need to have movies with horrible people in them to make them interesting and why not have them played by other people than white hetero men...however I do agree I think more likeable characteristics would be good but I don’t think you could ever fully root for Marla considering her profession so idk u would probably have to rewrite it... I would have loved to see this movie take a wolf of wall street approach too instead of the mafia but idk I’m no writer.

    • @kuro5116
      @kuro5116 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      awfully late but wasn't the point of this movie to challenge expectations by giving "unlikeable" characteristics to the roles you'd normally want to like? what eiza means by what she said, and she has mentioned this in other interviews in the past, is that male characters can be given these sort of traits and do far worse things and still be enjoyed by the audience, and that rarely we get to see female characters be unapologetic and morally questionable in their actions without the expectation for them to feel ashamed of what they've done. the intention of this writing for marla was to create a character that is, yes, ruthless and horrible, and never once given a sob story as background for the audience to empathize with, yet interesting enough to hook the viewer and watch it to the end. if people were to see this film and immediately despise marla for her actions, reeling in the fact that she "has no redeeming qualities" and call it a bad movie, i would dare to say they've fallen for the trap of the very intentional, very specific tone this piece was written in to challenge what you think you want to see in a film.
      personally i think blakeson did a fantastic job at setting that tone and angle. every time i see a comment complaining about how "unlikeable" marla is (which is most of the time) i feel like so much of the intention of this film as a dark satire has flown over that person's head. do i like marla as a person? no, but i think she is absolutely fascinating as a character, and has been written so intricately and fantastically that it's hard to fully dislike her; she does terrible things and is completely devoid of shame, does not give a shit about pretty much anything - and this "unlikeable" aspect of her character is wonderfully balanced with her fierce and genuine love for fran, who grounds her and acts as her somewhat moral compass. blakeson was treading on an extremely fine line here, but i really enjoyed that this part of marla was most often shown, rather than told - you'd really have to pay attention to how she behaves around fran to notice that fran was the one thing that she truly, truly cared for, and that alone, to me, made marla more of a person than a villain in this movie. and i know this because i've done some digging, but they were careful not to include much about marla's past or her history with fran because they wanted to avoid begging for sympathy, or outright giving anyone a reason to really justify marla's character (because that would make more likeable, i suppose).
      anyway. sorry for this hell of a comment, my intention wasn't really to dismiss your thoughts, but i always found it interesting when all people could talk about was how bad marla was and how bad the movie was when i honestly feel that that just means blakeson did his job at creating an unconventional story, but people fail to appreciate the messages sent with. i guess i needed an outlet to express this and i apologise that it ended up being under your comment

      6. The only redeeming character was Jennifer and she’s hardly in it at all. I could go on and on. Ridiculous

      @@BeliiSpii Totally agree with this 100%. The writing got sloppy halfway through the film . The best dark comedies try to have sparse moments of self-reflection or parody themselves sufficiently for the viewer to acknowledge some concordance with reality so that one can consider their own moral decadence at some point.
      None of that here. It's an attempt that ultimately falls flat.

    Awful movie, no moral person can defend this crap.
