      I was going to make the same comment here... and remember how we had to wait for a good FOUR years to watch the next sequel ? Meanwhile, we would hoard anything and everything about SW- posters, newspaper clippings, magazine spreads, T-shirts, toys... I still remember years later when we finally had the VCDs/DVDs, I literally went through every single of my favourite scenes may be 3 thousands times and paused to enlarge to look at all the details... (especially the MF!!) And I am still waiting for the right moment to break it to my wife that I would go ahead and get my Bandai PG MF, a dream finally came through since I was 7...

      I say it at a Drive In Theater in 77. I was 6. That movie had a massive impact on me. In the Space scenes, the border between the screen and the Sky became meaningless. It shaped my imagination.

    Imagine living in an era of anti-heroes, where almost every major film was depressing as hell and the entire country was still recovering from Vietnam and Nixon and there was an oil crisis and things seemed to be going to hell.
    Then imagine this comes out of nowhere.
    A feel-good film with effects we'd not seen before, infinitely watchable and unabashedly optimistic.
    And then you realize why some theaters had this playing for over a year.

    The thing that's missing here is the large theater / Mega screen experience from the 1970's. They were experimenting with all these sound systems back then - one of them (just before Lucas's THX system) was called "Sensurround" developed Jennings Lang, a Hollywood producer . It was used a lot for the popular Earthquake movie series. Anyway, in NYC in the 1970's at the Ziegfeld Theater (where I and lots of others saw it for the first time) had one of those systems. So, in the opening scene, when the Star Destroyer comes overhead, you could not only see but feel the massiveness and weight of it lumbering over head - plus I'm sure most people thought - "Damn, does this thing ever end?" When that thing cut into the screen frame from above , on that giant screen, and the whole place was rattling from the mega-base frequencies, the audience completely mentally lost it - lots of them were screaming and jumping out of their seats. A shock to the senses.They were totally sucked into the adventure from that point on - and immediately after ran back to pay to see it again and again in the same day. - trying to wrap their mind around what they had just experienced. In one instant, Sci-Fi movies before seemed ultra-lame - an extremely rare community room event in cinema.

    I was 10 when this movie came out. The special effects seem lame now and there are a million "space" movies, but in 1977, this was a life changing event. A magical moment, for sure. So much so, that when I saw Rogue One, I was actually fighting back the tears at the end of the movie, remembering the beginning of A New Hope, the experience I still remembered vividly, and having it come full-circle 40... years... later...! And I saw it the day Carrie Fisher died, and I had also recently turned 50. It was all so surreal and almost too much to handle. My kids who are big fans thought I was weird, but they can never understand the effect of seeing Star Wars in 1977 as a 10-year-old. This was such a profound moment in my life. I am curious to know if any others around my age had a similar experience with Rogue One. Probably helped that I didn't know anything about it when I went to see it. Thanks for this, Natalie. Seeing you see it for the first time really connected me to this memory again.

      This is incredible! I was 10 when I first watched Star Wars (not Episode IV, "A New Hope") in 1977. For a moment Jeffrey I thought I wrote your comment!
      I loved Rogue One! I just ties everything so well. It was also a great Star Wars movie.
      When I first saw Star Wars in 1977, I had mixed feelings. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I actually believed C3-PO and R2-D2 were real. (Again, I was 10.) OMG, I thought we were living in the future! But after the movie, I was let down because I didn't think I'd ever see this movie again. Remember, this was before the Internet, before HBO, before the VHS/Betamax Wars. We had 3 network channels, PBS, and the Spanish channel. You couldn't press pause to go pee or make Jiffy Pop popcorn. There was no concept of pause or rewind or fast forward! Our concept of a "smart" phone was when we learned about dialing P-O-P-C-O-R-N on our rotary phone to get the current time.
      I never thought I'd see this masterpiece again. I was really sad. But little did I know that I would see this movie several times each year after VHS won the war and became affordable. We wore that tape out! Today, I watch it every chance I get, and Natalie, "You've taken your first step into a larger world."

      @oneironaut420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Patali Chronological order is gone too but this person already started with Ep.4 so there was nothing I could do about it. Machete order was “designed” by a prequel-hating fan boy who felt that the “inferior” prequels needed to be “redeemed” by making them “flashbacks” within the “superior” original trilogy. It interrupts the narrative flow of the OT. Each trilogy has its own style which is also interrupted. It’s also interesting to see how a director’s style evolves with each film, not to mention the state of special effects technology.
      As for the new ones, George Lucas had nothing to do with their creation and they are quite poorly written. They’re just expensive fan fiction so it matters not one bit when or even if you watch them. There are really only two trilogies.

I worry that kids these days won't appreciate the movies since they were ground breaking during their initial release. But now with Computer graphics, etc. these type of movies are extremely common, and many of the tropes and cliches of Star Wars have been over done. In addition, Star Wars is the type of pop culture phenomenon that for people that haven't ever seen it, they usually know about 50% of it already, just from pop culture exposure. It would have been interesting to hear what you knew of the movie prior to watching it. Star Wars is such a huge part of pop culture now that people forget. When this movie first came out everyone thought it was going to be a huge bomb. Almost no one had faith in it. 20th Century Fox almost pulled the funding more than once. And because this was pre-internet it took a couple of months after it came out for everyone to realize what a huge, unprecedented hit it was.

    Imagine being 4 years old and seeing that Star Destroyer flyover at the beginning. Confirmed sci fi geek for life.
    They mentioned The Emperor.....
    The grappling hook was part of the Stormtrooper outfits they stole.
    The Han/Leia/Luke dynamics get interesting in the next movies.
    This is the weakest lightsaber duel of the saga. All others are better.
    There was footage that didn't make the cult of the film where Biggs, Luke's friend, as was also on Tattoine.

      I disagree about the lightsabers... this one they seem real and smoke and sizzle

    • @cenotemirror
      @cenotemirror 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Matt Mayse There were a lot of problems with filming that fight scene. The physical saber props were very, very fragile and the blades broke with even a bit of power behind a collision. Alec Guinness was an old and somewhat frail man who was limited by age in his movements and speed. David Prowse could barely see in the Vader costume. Neither of them had the weeks of practice and choreography that a fast, active saber duel needs. It comes across as rather two old dudes tapping sticks, but honestly given the conditions and limits they were working with it’s a wonder it looks as good as it does.

    • @mem1701movies
      @mem1701movies 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike L I know all that but the rotating reflective sticks along with the smoke and real sparks made the lightsabers seem more real than any other STAR WARS film

    • @matth1589
      @matth1589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually like the lightsaber duel for the element of realism. Lightsabers would be an absolutely lethal thrusting sword. All the big swinging cuts that come later would be utterly superfluous. They are so effective at cutting you would want to thrust in, which is faster, and then with a flick of wrist you would create massive wounds.
      The Obi-Wan Vader fight looks a like two people who respect the thrust. The blade contact, the small feints, it's not cinematic but looks a lot like people that know that the first one of them to give a small opening is going to be dead or dying, cut open, less than a second later.
      Also, Guiness looks like he has actually done some fencing, everything comes from the wrists. Fruity little spin aside, he always keeps his blade between himself and his opponent.
      The OT fights get more cinematic but, for me are still better than the over choreographed fighting from the prequels, which look like what they are well drilled dances between people twirling their light sticks, spinning and then smacking them together. It's like big budget morris dancing.

    • @majkus
      @majkus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, that flyover (like the Hoth flying in TESB) really only is effective on a big screen, where it really seems to be coming in overhead. Even your 80-inch home screen does not reproduce that.

    Release order for the first 6. 4,5,6,1,2,3... THEN you can go chronologically from there. Rogue One goes right in front of Episode 4, so it's "legal" to watch that prior to rewatching 4 again. But you'll get a lot more references the second time around.

    The skeleton in the desert was the skull and spine of a krayt dragon. Big, vicious lizards. The noise Ben made was actually the call of a krayt (though modified from its original version), which is why the sand people ran away.
    Sand people fight and kill krayts as a rite of passage, and they do not take them on with small numbers.
