I definitely agree. Spider-Man is the only hold out if Marvel gets him back then everything will be back under their umbrella because Sony is just constantly throwing stuff to the wall, hoping that something will stick, especially with them trying to do these movies with supporting cast of his which makes no damn sense
Agreed. Even if reports are true, the Justification would be the money they spend getting this movie out the door is less than they would lose if they lost the Spiderman IP altogether.
I’m actually stunned that you’re all on the side of Marvel. Not only because Sony purchased those right fair and square, or because Marvel is far less trustworthy than Sony, but especially because Marvel has proven over and over that they’ll ruin characters.
Sony doesn't even own videogame rights. Sony only owns movie rights at this point. The reason PS has exclusive Spider-man games is because they own Insomniac (the developers who chose to make a Spider-man game)
I don't think they had the right mindset to do a dedicated subdivision of the studio, which is something an IP of that size requires to properly manage. Even Marvel hired Supervising Editors for each "family" of titles, and that was just for the comics. They could have Harry Pottered Spider-Man. Start at the beginning and tag the important story beats through the years. Could have made their own cinematic universe, plenty of spinoff material if they just cultivated the IP. But they saw a popular movie character. They saw sequels to churn out and reboot as needed for a built in fan base. Not the decades of storylines to easily mine for adaptation. Can you imagine adapting the "Monsters" (Will'o'wisp and Tarantula) story arc...? Kraven's Last Hunt? Modern Spider-Slayers? So many things... And we got mostly 1s and dones. Not any TRUE nemesis.
This would have made the most sense but they’ve been so focused on rushing a villain verse rather than putting all their energy into making the most and best out of Spidey proper.
Well, I'm kinda 50/50. So they paid for them and shared profits in a lot of different ways and the deal really made Feige use the character in a more cautious way. Spider Man was a way to keep MCU alive for far longer. Now they have X Men, FF, almost every property is back. Tom Holland's portrayal of Spider-Man was the golden ticket.
The cause for the delay in Sony's script seems obvious to me; it has to link seamlessly between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. However, they have been unable to work that out until the plots for the other two movies were nailed down. They're caught between a rock and a hard place.
Sony: "Hey Marvel, you got 2 options: We release a half-finished, crap, movie that diminishes the value of one of your marquee players in the upcoming Avengers movies.. ORRRRR you can give us a few extra months on that deal we made." Crisis averted (for Sony).
I just want the fighting to stop by now. Sony causing so many issues makes me root for Marvel to get Spider-Man back. Marvel should own the rights to their own stuff anyway, but I went along with it because I always thought "Sony is trying their best to protect Spider-Man too." But like, Spider-Man is fast, and always busy, it's a shame we can't seem pass by other heroes in NewYork more, doing his own thing. Kinda like "hi, ok bye!" kinda interaction if nothing else.
Give the rights back to Marvel ffs and just release Spider-Man 4 AFTER Secret Wars, once you've ended The Multiverse Saga and soft-rebooted. Honestly, that makes more sense BUSINESS-WISE, since Marvel will have already regained the Spider-Man rights and STORY-WISE with the direction Marvel wanted to go with Spider-Man 4 in the first place. After all their flops outside of the animated Spider-Verse films, Sony doesn't deserve to keep the IP.
The movie releasing last year would have been consistent with the previous MCU Spider-Man film release timings too. 2023 would have been the right year. We could had it along with Across The Spider Verse
That would be so fkng game changing. Its been FAR too long for a spidey film, but if it causes the rights to revert to marvel, maybe marvel should pay someone to sabotage sonys equipment just in case 😊
This multi studio "collaboration" is just endless sequential disasters waiting to happen. Getting everything back in one house is definitely for the best
Dude they are not letting that go, they will have them do pre production or something that counts as production before the timeframe to keep the rights, even location scouting and anything related to the film can be considered in production even if principal photography is a ways out
Good, about fcuking time. No, one wants to see a Spider-Man mythology without "SPIDER-MAN"! No, one wants to see villian lead films. Without the hero, that's the foil to that villain. No, one wants to feel "sorry" for the villians.
This is probably for the best, and they only have themselves to blame, if sony wasn't being dense as usual and agreed to do the grounded spiderman 4 marvel alledgedly wanted they wouldn't be in this pickle right now.
Let em lose it. They don't deserve Spider-Man. Marvel's smart enough to keep licensing Miles to the Sony Animation Studios for Spider-Verse stuff, but the rest needs to go back to Marvel.
Yes please. Sony's been serving some would've-been-great Marvel stories on the executioner's block and call it a visual product. And they need to pay. Big time.
1. Are we sure the spinoff movies don't count toward moving the deadline? It's the same license, isn't it? 2. Last time this happened (a fourth Spider-Man movie taking too long to develop), Sony had the TASM script already in development, and ended up fast-tracking that so they could hold on to the rights. I don't know if they're sitting on any secret backup treatments this time, but who knows? Maybe they've got someone hammering out a simple, 90-page mid-budget alternate Spider-Man script as we speak. Or maybe the WGA strike really blindsided them. In any case, Marvel getting the full rights back wouldn't be a terrible thing. Not necessarily, anyway.
I was doing an essay response.....the shortened version: Spiderman returning to Marvel would be neat They should be doing spiderman 4 with Toby They can do one with Andrew to introduce spider-gwen. Production doesn’t have to mean starting filming. Can be other stuff, like costume design and stuff. I want Disney to get the Spidey rights, but it would never in a million years be because of something like this. Sony could work around this 500 ways
I’d love to see marvel get full rights back for Spiderman but I would also hate if Sony rushes just to make Spiderman movie & then isn’t good as something marvel could do.
I want Marvel Studios to get these rights back as much as anyone so that we stop getting crap like Madame Web. But I'm also worried that Spidey will crowd out other projects
I’d love Sony to lose the rights, but if Spider-Man 4 is any later than summer 2026, I bloody riot. It’s already coming 3-4 years late by my reckoning if it makes that date.
Spider-Man 4 really should have been a last year movie. Imagine having that and Across The Spider Verse in the same year. It also would have been consistent with the release timing of all the previous MCU Spider-Man films.

Not sure if this is true. Unless they changed the parameters of the original agreement, it was my understanding that the non-Spiderman spider verse films were included. So, the clock would start after the last Venom not No Way Home. But we'll see.
There was an unreleased Fantastic Four movie in the 90s that was made just so the studio could keep the film rights. They didn't even have to release it. What's stopping Sony from doing a cheap Spider-Man movie just for this purpose? This would buy them the time they need.
