Around 1975 in my teens, my father came in our general dealer shop saying " we are closing the shop I'm taking you to the cbd outside PEPSTORE in highstreet" . Jonathan Butler, Ronnie Joyce and Richard Jon Smith were to perform. Smith was a bit older than the other TWO but were all very young teens. They were singing so beautifully we youngsters were screaming and didn't want them to leave. Around that time, my two best friends and I, went to Richard J Smit show at Maywood cinema. A show to remember in as much that I blackmailed my oldest brother who accompany us and forgot to check on us before leaving with his girlfriend after the show, until he got home without me. And my father sent him back to find us. He made me lie and say I was still at my friend's home. For that he will buy me the LPs of RJ SMIT, and J Butler if I don't tell that he forgot to check on us, as I blackmailed him to do so. Those LPs got old, scratchy but I'm keeping them as memory of good music that is scarce these days. Cape Town Boys took it to the World. RIP Ronnie Joyce ♥️♥️♥️🇿🇦 JBG

as a youngster growing up in chatsworth in the 70s, JB was our hero. we never saw him (no television in SA till "75 - and then you had to be a certain color to appear on the box)......
what a shame, he had to go out of our beautiful country to make it big. I'm glad he hasn't forgotten his roots.
He's a genius arranger...... hope to meet him some day.

What a geat singer of Belgravia Estate , never completetd school . Attended school at Konkies in Cashel Ave , Athlone opposite the Masjiedus Salaam . Before the school was Alexander Sinton before they moved to the Conrner of Campberwell and Thornton Roads .
Yes there he did not complete the primary school but sat regularly with Eric on the stoep at Richard Jon Smiths house . Eric was able to play all musical instruments well . Trained at Hewat Teachers TRaining College and Boarding at the Grandmother of Richard Jon Smith, we used to call her Antie as she was of the oldest women in our Area and Mrs Lovelot that could speak an excellent quality of English and Afrikaans .
Ja my Broertjie , those were the days when the dirt was still taken away with horse and cart and the Joyces Dairy Milk man ..by the name of Dennis.... used to whistle early morning tunes to signal his presence. The bus terminus was at Campberwell road and Belgravia road , right next to Benbow road . There was no Mitchells Plan and No Hanover Park.
Wow How I wish for those days ....... dik ollap tyd....
Toe die Suid Afrikaanse Rand twee Pnd was , Drie duitse Mark......rerrag n sterke land ..... my vaderland .........
Hoe verlang ek huis toe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ich wohne jetzt in Bayern , Deutschland. Esa ist gerade bei uns Winter , Schnee und Kalt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is probably the most beautiful reply I have ever read.
I was born in '76, so i missed this period, but I grew up around folk who often spoke about it.
That sense of community. The pride of my people. The honour of a man.
I left Cape Town in the 80s and came back after 2000.
I was shocked to see the old values gone.
Pregnant teenage girls, young single mothers, hooligan gun-wielding boys, etc.
SO much fear in Cape Town these days...
I long for those days when we could sleep with our doors unlocked...Where the Milky would leave milk, orange and guava juice in glass bottles at the doorstep...Fish n chips smothered in vinegar and wrapped in newspaper...the auntie on the corner made koe'sisters for everyone in the road...marbles, gatties and tol challenges for kids...Kayangs on a friday...Penny polonies on a wednesday...Navy blue suit with brown shoes on Christmas day...Klopse on tweede nuwe jaar.
1c got me 2 sweets! lol - and I know you okes got a bag!
We need to go back to the old Cape Town again.

Takes me back to my hometown Chatsworth, DBN, SA. Everywhere you went, you would hear the voices of Little Ronnie J, JB, RJS, The Flames etc belting away on the airwaves & turntables. Thank you so much for posting this video. I've been a fan of Mr. Butler's since the mid-80's (my high school years). I had no clue he was so talented at such a young age. He's really amazing. I've always said that his combination of vocals and guitarsmanship is almost unfair.

Springbok Radio was my other favourite station David Gresham (The Groosome Gresh Top Twenty,) and lots of other programs. Memories that will always stay with us despite the apartheid regime of the time.
