  • Performed live, 25th March 1950, by Bill Shirley and Gale Robbins.
This wonderful song came from an episode of "The Ed Wynn Show." I offer it as a little reminder that there was once a thing as civilization.
Gale Robbins was present in many musicals, among them "The Barkleys of Broadway," "Three Little Words" and "Calamity Jane."
Bill Shirley provided the singing voice of Jeremy Brett in "My Fair Lady." He also sang "Once Upon a Dream" for the Disney feature "Sleeping Beauty."
The song was written by Edward Heyman and Victor Young. Amongst other recordings is a duet by Dick Haymes & Patty Andrews.
I love this number so much. It reminds me of the early 1929/30/31 Hollywood musicals: so much enthusiasm, talent, a relaxed atmosphere, basic lighting and camera set-ups and everything recorded live. Minimum pretentiousness, maximum freshness.
Lastly, please excuse the poor picture quality: it's off an mp4, off an mpeg2, off a 16mm copy, off a kinescope. It has a right to look a little tired. The entire episode (with a guest appearance from Gloria Swanson) can be found at archive.org.

I could listen to this all day! Bill Shirley has a fantastic voice!! Gale Robbins is great as well! Thanks for posting this. It's so hard to find videos/songs that he sings.

According to the play-bill - on the website playbillvault - the song was indeed introduced by Bill Shirley in the stage-show "Pardon Our French." Mr. Shirley sang the song with Fay de Witt.
Interestingly, the Broadway show itself did not open until 5th October 1950, more than six months after this number was performed on live TV in March of 1950.

Wow, I only know Bill Shirley as the prince from Disney's Sleeping Beauty--this is cool actually seeing him perform. Thanks for posting this!

This song is from an Olsen & Johnson revue called Pardon Our French (1950).
It was written by Victor Young (music) and Edward Heymann (lyrics) -and the only thing it lacks...is a bridge. I added one when I did a Victor Young show w/Rita Gardner (of the Fantasticks) a few years back at the Players Club. This couple has a certain charm.

Bill Shirley was also the dubbed voice of Freddy in the film version of "My Fair Lady".

Correction. Only the singing voice of Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Brett's vocals stayed for the spoken lines.

@SASORI707 Bill Shirley's voice was also dubbed in for Jeremy Brett's voice in My Fair Lady. I'm not sure why, since Jeremy Brett was also a singer.

    Great information - thank-you!
According to ibdb, Bill Shirley was in the show too. Possibly he introduced that song; anyone know for sure and with who? Denise Darcel appears to have been the female lead; perhaps it was with she?

Don't remember. For more info on this, you can contact Miles Kreuger of The Institute of the American Musical: I think he has a website.
