- From the classic movie, I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair (1952).
Sung by: Bill Shirley
Lyrics:
Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me,
Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee;
Sounds of the rude world, heard in the day,
Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away!
Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song,
List while I woo thee with soft melody;
Gone are the cares of life's busy throng,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea
Mermaids are chanting the wild lorelie;
Over the streamlet vapors are borne,
Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn.
Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart,
E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea;
Then will all clouds of sorrow depart,
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!
What an incredible voice....to think he also was the singing and speaking voice of Prince Philip in the 1959 Sleeping Beauty. So very handsome too...
vocals only
My My yes he was the vocals for Freddy and Prince Phillip. Such an amazing talent! and cute as can be!
Evianna Faye yes..,.
This movie was released 7 years before Sleeping Beauty as a matter a fact.
@@rachelann7119 🤔 According to IMDB, Wikipedia and The Movie Database, Bill Shirley was the singing & speaking voice of Prince Phillip in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty."
I used to play my keyboard for my mother Jackie. She loved to hear me play. The last time I played for her (in January 2020) I played this song over and over again, as well as "O Beulah Land" ("As on thy highest mount I stand"...) She passed away a week later, but the memory of this "last hurrah" with her is very special.
This is one of the most beautiful tenor voices I have ever heard despite the sound quality!
bertaga41 Yes, he was phenomenal, and wasn't even credited for his singing in the film "My Fair Lady."
bertaga41 yes..,.
He is a bari-tenor and was definitely the voice of Prince Philip.
How could he have not had a great singing career with a voice like this? This movie. Then singing for Prince Phillip in Sleeping Beauty and Freddy Eynsford-Hill in My Fair Lady.
It is one of the most beautiful lyric tenor voices I have ever heard. And I have heard plenty.
How can a guy with a voice like that not be as famous as Bing Frankie etc.
He can sing outside my window any night! 😍❤️
March cat.
Can you believe he was considered a Pop singer?
He had a great voice. Nice tone and quality. Young sounding voice too.
if someone sang like that to me,my only reaction would be - Marry me! :)
If I could go back in time, I'd go back to when he was 16 (or however old I am when time machines are invented) and then stay there for a while and make him fall in love with me, and then when we're like 20, I'd tell him everything and convince him to come back with me and to the time I left in the beginning. Then, I'd marry him and have him sing wonderful melodies to me night and day 24/7. *Sigh* I would love that ❤
"Beautiful Dreamer" was written by Stephen Collins Foster in 1862 and published posthumously in 1864; Foster was an enormously popular songwriter of the mid-19th Century, and this was one of the most popular parlor songs of the era, although Foster died before hearing it sung professionally. The movie is a Hollywood version of Foster's life, and he wrote all of the songs used in the film, including the famous title song.
Bill Shirley is perhaps best known for singing "On the Street Where You Live" in the musical "My Fair Lady." (Jeremy Brett, the actor who played Freddy in the musical, lip-synced the words.) If Foster had heard Shirley's version of the song, I think he would have been immensely pleased. Shirley's film and recording credits are very long (see his bio on the internet), but he was largely cast in B-movies and used as a "ghost-singer' for other actors and animated characters. If his voice sounds familiar, you may have heard him as the singing voice of Prince Phillip in the animated version (Disney) of "Sleeping Beauty." Shirley was a fabulous talent and deserved far greater recognition that he got during his life time. The last ten years of his life he worked in the real estate department of Litton Industries. He died in 1989.

Wow what a voice.....
WOW..... THIS IS GREAT..............
That's quite a serenade
Bill Shirley, the singing & speaking voice of Prince Phillip in Disney's animated masterpiece, "Sleeping Beauty. "
This part is just unforgettable.
If only this happened in real life... sigh!
love love love love love….too perfect
Fabulous.
Wow, this song would also have been a great song for Prince Phillip to sing to Princess Aurora while she was sleeping - before he kissed her!
I think in this movie, Foster does not wind up with this girl, but with her sister. A pity as this is a beautiful serenade.
Dreamy voice! ✨
He's going to wake up the whole neighborhood!
Wow!!
I'd love to see a Criterion Collection digitally remastered HQ of this Republic musical curio. I bought it years ago at the Dollar Store for... $1. It deserve a better fate than that.
Does anyone know where else I can get more from his music? It's amazing how some great voices go unheard.
this is one of a kind..and though im a lower end babyboomer i always loved the films the music the whole hollywood scene...so dreamy..so clean..so pure and honest...so lets wait until we get married type...All this rushing is just sickening really...women were women and men were men..how can one NOT be nostalgic here? This is what was called wooing i assume...
