The best and most satisfying gameplay mechanic I have ever experienced was the simple art of searching for and taking photographs of the unique alien fauna that make up this universe. What an ingenious aspect to put in a game's universe to help the story progress.... My body is ready for beyond good and evil 2... I. NEED. IT. :(
Apparently, the "Space Monkey Program" is a sort of 'kickstarter' crowd funding project more than anything, which implies they need additional funds to create the game. This irks me on two levels: firstly... really? I mean REALLY? After about 8 years of teasing whether the sequel (which it's not by the way, it's a prequel) will come out or not now they go and say that "we need money to create this game". After 8 years? Secondly: this means that the game is not anywhere near completion. They've been saying "It's coming" for the last decade, so why should I believe it now?
Will always be one of my favourite games of all time. Just waiting on the second one now! The main thing I really love about this game is it's unique style of art and its beautiful soundtrack, by far. And you're definitely right about it never getting old; I've had this game for years and I still occasionally play it and appreciate it all over again XD
+Lydia Smith I've been thinking of downloading it on psn, though I prefer full disc copy with case and all. but I'm interested in most games like this style.
To answer your question about the "Beyond Good & Evil" title while the game is simply about good and evil. From what I hear, BG&E was originally going to have a bigger, much more complex plot, but things happened (I can't remember what) and they kinda had to settle for a simpler, more black and white story.
Yeah, I can only assume that the camera system was a lot more troublesome for people playing on PCs. For me, the best part of the game was the emphasis on story and character moments. As you say, on paper, the story isn't terribly complex. But even though the game doesn't reinvent the wheel, the "little moments," sprinkled throughout the game gives it real real charm. The game obviously tried to emulate Zelda: Ocarina of Time in terms of gameplay, but BG&E is way more engaging to me. The relationships between the characters are simple, yet because there were so many little "throwaway" dialogue exchanges between them (often with unique music cues, as opposed to a looping midi track that doesn't change no matter what is happening on screen), I ended up caring way more about what happened to them than I ever did towards mute-Link. I will say though that the one part of the story that I wish hadn't been used was the cliched "chosen one" stuff at the end. Jade as a main character was just fine being an "ordinary" person (albeit with insane combat skills). It almost felt like it diminished her accomplishments to throw in some vague Harry Potter-esque mystical character origins.
True Story,my friend...I have this game for PS2 and it is fucking awesome. And the last boss fight...Its a boss fight to remember. And I have all the soundtracks for my mp3.
Im doing my very first playthrough right now (im late yes yes I know ^^ ). And wow. Just WOW! Why the F havent I played this until now!? It got a freaking amazing atmosphere! 👍💘 Love the art/design, just like Rayman 2 👌 Very good review!
It's a good game, but I found the serious lack of replay value sad. Since you can fully complete the game 100% with all the pearls and creature photos collected, the game just doesn't give you much reason to revisit it. Maybe a speedrun, but even then the game has such a strict path for you to follow that even speedrunning is kinda difficult.
The story is not between good and bad. The title does make sense. At the end of the game [SPOILERS!!!] you can hear the DomZ priest say: "You have finally come back to me. You have served your master well Shauni. You alone have brought the Hillyans to me. They have followed you blindly. You are not who you think you are. The pig has hidden your origins from you." Then Pey'j (the pig) says: "No, Jade NO don't listen to him". And the Domz priest makes the pig shut up. The DomZ priest then says: "You are the source of my powers, the instrument of my strength. They took you away in the hope of destroying me but I have survived, feeding me with only the most miserable of sacrifices. They made you human but you are not like them. You are mine Shauni and I am going to kill the human part of you. Shauni DomZ Thindraaal." During the fight the DomZ priest often says stuff like: "You did well Shauni, join me. Shauni ourDomZ." So basically Jade is actually DomZ but the pig has made her human. That also clarifies why Jade sometimes had visions of the DomZ leader (like during the first boss fight). So Jade is fighting against the DomZ but she herself is part of it.
That was a really nice let's play and a nice review too! Too bad you didn't played it on original consoles because the experience was more enjoyable : no camera bugs (well... almost none) and the UI was just perfect for gamepad (best virtual keyboard ever). Comparison between original game and PC/HD versions : comparison
+MadDemon64 Based on some quick googling it looks like the GOG version has some tweaks that allow it to work better on modern systems that the Steam version doesn't seem to have, but I can't be completely sure.

Amazing review! Love your voice!

+Erik Van der haag Something like that
This game is free on Xbox Live this month on the 16th.
Nice review :)
Skelz0r Thanks!
Good review!

Thanks! And nice to see the comparison. It's weird that the newer versions actually got worse in some ways.
That's awesome!
ive got it on my playstation 2 and its really fun to play with my big brother
Good thing this free for Xbox Live right know
Deffinitely not one of my favorite games to revisit.
You earned a subscription.
+φ First-order logic :D
I still sort of wish you had played it on console so I would know how the camera is on that
So, which version would you recommend, GOG or Steam?
+MadDemon64 Based on some quick googling it looks like the GOG version has some tweaks that allow it to work better on modern systems that the Steam version doesn't seem to have, but I can't be completely sure.
+MadDemon64 So, GOG if you can get it for cheap there, but if it's on sale on Steam maybe do some research?
Marshall Dyer Well, it is on sale on Steam currently. But I'm willing to wait if I need to for GoG.
Marshall Dyer So is it true that the pc version does not have controller support?
+MadDemon64 Yep, it doesn't support controllers.
I disagree with you in many parts. But your review was quite enjoyable. Here sir, have my like. =]
TCMOREIRA Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
all of it got old fast
