This must've been nostalgic but only to the haves. Now is so much of a better time than those past decades where poverty were rampant, and education and healthcare were not accessible to many. These are still the major problems of today's Indonesia, but things are so, so, so much better.
Yoga T. And the reason Islamophobia exists in the first place is the result of the narrowminded in Islam trying to force their stance on not only on the vast majority of people with the same religion but also on those having a different religion as well - there was no such thing as 'Islamophobia' in the period shown here in this vid. There was only - during the Orde Lama days,in which I was born - a growing hate towards ALL religions,a result of communist influence - and Indonesia can thank the Orde Baru of Pak Suharto for eradicating it.
I don't know why we're even talking about islamophobia, but you cannot be victims of islamophobia in a country where Islam is the religion of the majority. It's like a white man declaring himself as a victim of racism in the US. It just doesn't make sense. There was never a purge specifically directed at Islam and the Muslims. Moderation was forced upon to all followers of all religions in Indonesia, be it Islam, Christian, Hindu, Buddha, but especially Confucianism by Soeharto. At that time the Chinese-Indonesians and the followers of Confucianism can legitimately scream that they are the victims of 'Confucianismophobia' and Sinophobia, because they were forced to renounce their faith, change their names, and they were also banned from practicing their cultural customs and traditions. So, Indonesian Muslims screaming they're victims of Islamophobia? Huh. Get out of here, you're being ridiculous. You're living the good life of being the super-majority so, do shut up.

Born in 89, and spend my childhood in Bandung and I still remember how lovely Bandung at 90's. Before Cipularang and Pasopati was build, access to Bandung area from Jakarta were more time consuming, around 4 hours using public transportation or car. Cars and motorcycles still quite rare item. Traffic jam were rarely happen at 90's in Bandung, except for special occasion like Iedul Fitri. After cipularang and pasopati was build, people from other cities especially Jakarta came to Bandung more often, because the access was easier, Traffic in Bandung became more crowded and our small quite city became busier. I missed that era where there are many big palm tree in pasteur and big old tree in the middle of Surapati, they all taken down for Pasopati. I missed that forrest in upper dago, before elite house and cafe resto was build up there. I missed that quite time. I remember Bandung weather is quite cold at night around 14-19°C. The sky was totally clear at that time because air pollution and light pollution was not as massive as nowadays.

For any Indonesians who watched this and were around in the 70s-90s, how did this video make you feel? Was there anything in specific that brought back nostalgia or memories? Edit: I just want to thank everyone who’s commented so far for sharing any and all reactions, good or bad. Videos like this don’t show the negative side (which is no fault/criticism of the channel), and I believe it’s important to learn all aspects of history. I saw “The Look of Silence” a long time ago, but I clearly have some more research to do.
I am fan of this channel thanks to their nostalgic videos. Honestly this one is subpar to their other videos because of: mix of too different time periods like the 70s and 60s included, music not really fitting to the footage IMHO. Not their fault coz sources of clips are limited compare to Japan videos for example.
Born in 98, these doesn't gave me those "nostalgic" feeling compared to the Japanese one. In fact only japan in 80s are the one that gave me nostalgic feeling not even the America or Europe in 80s could gave me these unique feelings. 🤔
Salam Bhineka Tunggal Ika, berbeda-beda tapi tetap satu jua.

Wow. Indonesian was much more liberal, progressive, and westernized during the 1980s and 1990s. Look at how the urban youngsters dressed up, very fashionable and modern. Today, Indonesia is becoming more and more conservative
Not true bro.. If you live in the big city.. It look the same like in the video but more modern.. But if you talk about Indonesia more conservative it's bcs of social media that can easily share bout religious information in massive platforms.. But it's okay Indonesia never gonna be like Middle Eastern or Afghanistan.. Indonesia will be Indonesia.. Many Muslim in Indonesia eat pork and drink alcohol or even drugs.. And in the society they don't really care about it but of course it's prohibited in religion POV..
no…. Indonesian is much more developed and richer than what it looks in this scene now. Indonesian is always conservative people, but the conservative idea was oppressed for long time. Thus, they could not really express their conservativism. And also, many economy opportunities were limited from conservative society back at that time. Now, there are many conservative middle class in Indonesia. Does not matter being conservative or liberal, we just do not want to be piss-poor. If the idea of conservativism winning the Indonesian society, it is just how the way it goes when the population ages… and society median age becoming older and older. I believe it is the same everywhere else. You cannot expect the same “liberal” idea exist today when Indonesia was piss-poor nation back in 80s and population pyramid looks lot like squashed triangle with extremely big population in young age. And the scene in this video is coming from the movie called Blok M (1990). I am telling you, that was not how most Indonesians dressed in rural area at the same time. So, if you think the top 1% of rich Indonesian in this scene representing the”so called” liberal Indonesia of 1980s,,, ohhh, I can assure you how wrong you were…
Yes, in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's, Indonesian women rarely wore the hijab, but after 1998 many began to wear the hijab because this is the reform era, outside influences are easy to enter, especially the influence of Wahhabism from Saudi Arabia. However, Indonesia is now more liberal and secular.

One thing I know about this era of Indonesia is that it was a very politically and culturally moderate era. Hardline Islamists and/or Westernized and consumerist citizens were almost unheard of. Corruption were such a tradition. Nepotism was the only way to work in the government. The disparities between the riches and the poor were monumental. The development of Java is million years ahead of the other islands. Indonesia is much better now. The development in other islands are prioritized by the government. And the reason Islamophobia exists in the first place is the result of the narrowminded in Islam trying to force their stance on not only on the vast majority of people with the same religion but also on those having a different religion as well - there was no such thing as 'Islamophobia' in the period shown here in this vid. There was only - during the Orde Lama days,in which I was born - a growing hate towards ALL religions,a result of communist influence - and Indonesia can thank
the Orde Baru of Pak Suharto for eradicating it.

Thank god it's over, sure we have bikinis and stuff but I'd rather have my freedom and not being poor thank you
idk i wasnt alive then but i showed it to my mum n she felt nostalgic~~ the uniforms schools n traffic particularly ^^

Born in 98, these doesn't gave me those "nostalgic" feeling compared to the Japanese one. In fact only japan in 80s are the one that gave me nostalgic feeling not even the America or Europe in 80s could gave me these unique feelings. 🤔

It's the era where people were still smiling, kind-hearted, and polite. At least that's what my parents said
Both my parents who is born in different island & my granma also said the similar thing. Semenjak pak harto ga turun2 dan puncaknya kerusuhan 1998 baru Indo mulai terpecah belah dan makin parah selama 10thn terakhir :(

Soeharto control everything...so no foreign political influence in indonesian society
@@chellerf yes colonizing is the best way to say for Timor Leste, in Indonesia era, Timor Leste have better life than now...look how poor Timor Leste now compared to Indonesian neighbouring east Nusa province.
Back then the freedom of speech, for religion and politics were nil. There was reason why Soeharto was president for 30 years. He controlled the votings fully. Civil servants have to vote for him. Corruption were such a tradition. Nepotism was the only way to work in the government. The disparities between the riches and the poor were monumental. The development of Java is million years ahead of the other islands.
Indonesia is much better now. The development in other islands are prioritized by the government. If there are more people wearing hijab and showing their religion affliction now, it's because freedom of speech and religion is guaranteed in the constitution now. Indonesian now is still the always smiling, kind hearted, and polite as the one back then, they are just more outspoken.

You can see somewhat of this in Bali, in big cities, not so much.

My Grand Father spend almost 10 year in Indonesia. In his life always said Indonesian is coolest country in the shout east world. But now is not much different with Pakistanis or arabian. "My message" our culture is very priceless , Don't let it down or replaced by foreign influence!
You barely have a culture...
Ahhh lebay lu.
Baru kemarin dengerin nyokap, tante sm om cerita2 masa muda, mulai dr tante yg pernah jd ratu ajojing sampe cerita kabur rame2 dari rumah mau nonton konser Deep Purple 😂
Seru bgt dengerin cerita2 generasi senior
Inilah Indonesia yg seharusnya..
gak, Indonesia gak pake mobil, gak pake pakaian modern dari barat.
gak pake hp, gapake pp kartun penjajah.
Indonesia itu harusnya 100%tradisional

Jakarta for me is Metro Manila of Indonesia because the environment like buildings and the people are almost same as Manila did but because Metro Manila is composed of cities and municipalities, Jakarta is mixed not only Manila, but also Taguig, Makati, Quezon City, Mandaluyong and Pasay City
For me, I ❤ Indonesia so much because this is my dream visit especially Jakarta so with all my heart, I hope to see you in Indonesia soon 😊😊
Greetings from Calamba City Laguna in the Philippines 🇵🇭💕🇮🇩

for a moment watching this video, mind is as if feeling the vibe that is recorded in every second in this video. Thanks bro
Wooooowwww style²nya berasa model high class vintage parah
This brings so much good memories under the military dictatorship
Yes,indeed😊👌- everyone born in the 50ies - like me - can tell you around the beginning of '64 the inflation was around 365%,with crime and communists dominating the streets and by the end of that year Indonesia finally went bankrupt - in debt 3 times more
compared to its capability of ever paying it back.
Without the Smiling General Indonesia would have long ceased to exist - simple as that.
Suharto was wayy better than Sukarno. If he continued to rule, communists will dominate after taking control of Indonesian army in 1965. US and allies will have huge headache. People could even be imprisoned for playing Beatles songs. Undet Suharto, you are free to do anything, except for criticizing the government and standards of life was way higher than Old Order era.
Era Orba memang era yg menyenangkan walaupun banyak orang bilang era orba begini begitu tapi aslinya sangat asyik tenang dan damai
What a beautiful video, suasanya bener”nyaman bnget pas era 90an. Rindu pas main dri pagi sampe magrib, mlm nya nnton breng sekeluarga.pengen balik deh rasanya. Thank you for sharing this video❤
Bayangkan 50 tahun lagi cuplikan sinetron jadi referensi kehidupan Indonesia era 2020-an.
These are amazing, almost like time traveling. Please do Vietnam next!!
Gw lahir di tahun 2006, gw pecinta vibes-vibes jaman dulu. Entah kenapa gw Kangen jaman ini, padahal gw lahir nya setelah jaman ini. Gw lihat nya adem, gw pecinta vibes-vibes jadul, dari sejak SMP udh mencoba hidup sederhana sepert jaman Itu, sebenernya yg gw rasakan hidup ini skrg gak Se-adem dulu kayanya.
Saya lahir 2000,saya juga menyukai vibes era 80s-90s,dimana suasana aesthetic nya sangat real apa adanya.

Inilah indonesia yg gua kenal. Lahir th 76 dan meninggalkan indonesia thn 1996. Waktu berkunjung pertama kali ke indonesia lg th 2003, jauh beda.
I missed the Soeharto era before 1998 economic crisis.
I first came here in 1984 and those were wonderful years here in Indonesia
now it's very sad, many women are forced to wear hijab
Even at the time indonesia was the richest in asia, china and korea are vastly poorer can't compet with us? But, now? Indonesia became wkwkwk land😂
Only for foreigners but to us the present day is the best year of Indonesia. Finally after all those years you can voice your opinions and determine your own fate instead of the ruling government to decide it for you
Seeing east and south east asian peoples is pleasing.
This is so beautiful 😭💕
Beautiful people😊
take me back there....Indonesia yang Damai, neutral ramah dan secular....🙂
And enjoy the hopelessness as your family members be abducted by the State and have your mouths being taken by the government since you were born then LMAO
Sekarang masih sekuler apa maksud anda ?
You want your belly dance and nudity to be excepted ,then it is not secularism it is something else
Muslim woman still marry christians their,it is still a secular country
JAMAN dulu Orba meminimalkan semua identitas agama. Imlek dilarang, hijab dilarang, natalan dibatasi, ormas Islam diawasi dll. Skrg identitas Islam menguat sebagai respon menguatnya identitas Non Islam spt Imlek atau Natalan.
Semua berkat Orba. Kaga asal buka mulut, tong kosong bunyinya nyaring doang macam sekarang
Betul. Indonesia yang indah, sejuk. Sebelum Indonesia rusak oleh intoleransi.
They said 500 years ago we're first infected with the so called "peaceful religion".
Funny how today we're seeing its peak, or rather, the last thrashing & last breath of such ideology. The beginning of the end, so to speak.
Ckckkc
@@cosmickitten3591 Gw Cina, aman2 aja bro.

Dunno. I get the nostalgia for simpler times, but for me it's always tempered by the memories of how much poorer Indonesia was and the political repression of the Soeharto era. The conservatism was always there, too, just manifested differently (with less obvious religious overtones). If anything, my nostalgia for a more liberal social and political climate would go for the early 2000s instead.
Beautiful video editing paired up with great music. What's the song called please?

True in Indonesia...in similar to London I saw video from the 70s 80s I didnt see woman in hijab, but look at today, many women with hijab and the worst part they installed fundamentalist Khan as a leader
