Gotta love that old school mentality of using grinding to pad out a game! 🤣 Imagine if Amazon had a banner saying "Your credit score is too low for deodorant....LEVEL UP!"
Jason, you and I have a sympathetic relationship. This game is called "EEEZZZ." A harder version of "ease" that was Y's. I am so sorry about your breakup with your Southern Confederate general William Robert Lee.
I just looked and, sadly, it doesn't seem like there's an English version. Unless you can read Japanese, looks like the only option for playing Xak 2 is a fan translation of the MSX version.
I played through xak 3 on the pc engine with an eglish patch. It's a VERY different game. The footage in this video doesn't do it justice. It's a good looking game. It also has some adult content. I recommend it.
I recently replayed Ys II, both those first two games have a lot of the same things you described in Xak, so I could imagine myself enjoying it in the same way. Almost like the game is "what if Lagoon ascended to being decent". I'm assuming since Xak part 2 didn't come out on SNES it sounds like siding with the monster criminal is the good end despite neither giving you any closure. I will say that bosses that one shot you even after you grinded to the point of making all the other monsters trivial is a warcrime in the Ys-like subgenre.
To be fair, Ys I is a fairly complete standalone game, even if a short one, and one that does end on a cliffhanger. Unlike in Xak, where you don't defeat the bad guy, I don't think Darm was even directly mentioned in Ys I, Dark Fact was the sole main antagonist before Darm was revealed. In II, you had Dulles essentially filling in for Fact as Darm's main flunky, though.
Funny. Sunsoft retools this to look like a clone of Ys, and meanwhile around this time, Falcom are making Ys V look like a clone of Mana. It's a circle of ripoffs!
You can go through the poisonous swamp and to the second town early and if you enchant the second sword you can attack the enemies near this town for faster exp This game is alright, a bit too similar to Ys but without the distinction of the bump combat though
Seven floppies for this shit blows my mind because I had Ultima 6 for PC as a kid and it came on seven floppies. I just imagine opening the box for Xak 2 and going "WOW seven discs... this is going to be as epic as Ultima 6" and installing it and then getting... this shit.
@@Fattydeposit Their problem was, the company had invested a ton of their money into this golf course project that completely went bust. They had to lay off a bunch of their best team members from the 8-bit era and operate on a more shoestring budget after that. =(
@0:22 - it clearly says in Katakana that Japanese people should say this foreign word as “Sa~ku” above the English “Xak” … So, ‘Sa~ku”. See also - a katakana chart ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana ). Now you know how to pronounce it (or, at least, how the Japanese creator intended it to be pronounced).
At about the 5 minute point in this video, I'd convinced myself this would be a fun, bite-sized mini RPG one can blow through in 2-3 hours. Well, I was wrong. Super interesting vid mate, I loved the washing machine factoid!
Oh sh*t, you actually used a proper past tense for grind. I have spent years listening to youtubers not doing so. I feel like I just unlocked some kind of achievement from witnessing it hehehe. Seriously, though, I really appreciate the respect for proper use of language.
So the Japanese above the name is the katakana for Sei Ku. Y's also has a weird romanization, if I saw the katakana and didn't know I would write Ys as iisu.
Both Xak and lord of the rings volume 1 start with "find the elder's glasses" quest? Yeesh, getting my brain fried trying to play lord of the rings on a SNES classic is what led me to this channel
As much of a blatant Ys clone as Xak is the developers added some small quality of life changes. You can jump to get out of being cornered and for some basic platforming and you can carry multiple healing items. If you enjoyed Ys book 1 and 2 Xak is enjoyable enough.
Reviewing every snes RPG is a real grind
"You boys be quiet down there" 🤭! I love the Basement Brothers🥰!
Fun fact Lagoon was originally a computer game that had the same bump combat as Ys.
I was so confused because i just watched the basement brothers episode of this.
I think we are overdue for a spin-off game focused on Rabby.
I didn't even know Xak was on SNES, what a surprise.
3:20 "STATE of your footage, mate!"
Perfect Irish. I've never been prouder ☘️ Sláinte Jason!
Gotta love that old school mentality of using grinding to pad out a game! 🤣 Imagine if Amazon had a banner saying "Your credit score is too low for deodorant....LEVEL UP!"
That's just "gainful employment"
Wont be long!

I wonder if it would be more interesting to play that PC-Engine version with both games.
I just looked and, sadly, it doesn't seem like there's an English version. Unless you can read Japanese, looks like the only option for playing Xak 2 is a fan translation of the MSX version.
@@jasonblalock4429 Weirdly, there's an English patch for the sequel, Xak III, for PC Engine. It's more of the same.

Props for mentioning basement brothers great channel.
Props for giving props dude!!!
The correct way to say xak is exak, as In exactly

Swear to god you were at 3000 subs last time I looked. Congrats and drinks on me next time fellow florida resident.
He did a ton of grinding.
You should see the insane sprite gore in Xak 3
Who plays rpgs for the story?
I play for the math. The stacks. The mystery of item usage
You are a very good TH-camr
You can go through the poisonous swamp and to the second town early and if you enchant the second sword you can attack the enemies near this town for faster exp
This game is alright, a bit too similar to Ys but without the distinction of the bump combat though
The PC-88 version is also available on Switch but it's in japanese which is a bummer for an RPG.

I prefer the Japanese pronunciation: Sack.
Oh no . What happened to William Robert Lee?
I was wondering that same thing.
Relationship with Willam Robert Lee ended, now Kojiro Highwind best friend
Sunsoft was awesome during the 8bit days but they lsot their ways here. I know its ported but it holds true.
Sunsoft had a few bright spots in the 16-32 but era but yeah, the fall off was hard.

Very entertaining review!
I think it's pronounced "gyro", but it might be "gif".

Nothing evokes high fantasy like Doug's Armory

it's 'sak'
game xak
This was a good review i never would have known about this was it not for this review.
Oh sh*t, you actually used a proper past tense for grind. I have spent years listening to youtubers not doing so. I feel like I just unlocked some kind of achievement from witnessing it hehehe. Seriously, though, I really appreciate the respect for proper use of language.
X is prounounced Sh in some chinese words?
So the Japanese above the name is the katakana for Sei Ku. Y's also has a weird romanization, if I saw the katakana and didn't know I would write Ys as iisu.
Respect for shouting out basementbros
Is this the Dark Souls of snes rpgs?!
No. That metaphor is lazy and so, so tired. Be better.
Yay a new video to start the week.. I won't off myself
Theres actually 4 games, a spinoff, and a company wide parody.
that filter... now i have nightmares

It might be formulaic and by the numbers but that's something I like. Compared to most modern games I actually prefer these simpler titles.
As much of a blatant Ys clone as Xak is the developers added some small quality of life changes. You can jump to get out of being cornered and for some basic platforming and you can carry multiple healing items. If you enjoyed Ys book 1 and 2 Xak is enjoyable enough.
Very good bro but this isn’t dark wizard 😮
I grew up next to a kid named Xak ....
Was this in Utah?
How's that might & magic 3 SNES review coming along? Just saw on pricecharting that they somehow ported that old PC game to SNES and it's a doozy! 😅
"really warms my bones" a little nod to E.J.'s son?
I love these reviews
this is like ys but without any of the things that makes ys good 😭 at least the split between ys and ys ii makes sense
Love this game despite its problems!
AND MORE !
Where can I find that rpg tier list of yours
Music was neat
How many SNES RPGs are there? Is a Chrono Trigger and/or Secret of Mana review coming? Love your takes, other than your hate for little ninja bros 😹😹
Modern gamers, just forcing everything to 4k 60fps with all the filters? gross
I never even heard of this game.
To be fair I think the Super Nintendo version is the least interesting version of this game, even if the original was a fun but simplistic Ys clone.
Ex-ardion
3:15 Utterly disgusting.
/sakû/
yup, all the crap in rpgs no one talks about
third
This games seems aggressively mediocre
