Mountain Climbing with a TU250X

  • I rode the TU250X up to the top of Howard's Knob just to see how well it could climb. Unfortunately the park at the top of the mountain was closed for the season, but the TU handled the trip well enough that I'll have to take it back when the park finally opens back up in May.
    The exhaust pipe at the head might have a little more blueing (the golden brown tint that the polished stainless pipes get from getting hot) after being held at nearly WOT for several minutes at a time, but I can't really say for sure.
    This bike has the 16T counter-shaft sprocket and the stock rear sprocket... and just over 1,000 miles on the odometer.

    Hills are a non-issue for me here in western Oklahoma. The wind can be a big factor tho. Big cross winds and head winds really can be a challenge on this little bike when going long distances.

    I think your turn signal was on the whole trip.

    I'm confused by your question. Countersteering is how you steer every motorcycle. Unless you have a sidecar there is no way to avoid it. Countersteering leans the bike.. cruisers do it, sportbikes do it.. even bicycles countersteer.
    Are you asking if it's hard to steer? No.. it's a very easy bike to ride.

    Whoops, responded to a few questions with my alternate account. It's still me, folks.. just an account for my less interesting videos. Yes, my videos can actually be LESS interesting.. crazy, I know. :p

    Just bought a TU250 today and was surprised to see this video from Boone. I’m in BE.

    Yeah, this is more like it. Love the sound of that engine, and all the shifting with the smooth Suzuki gearbox has got to be wonderful.

    What is that you keep doing with your left thumb, everytime you change gears? Looks like you're pressing on the turn-signals or something.

    I also do this all the time with my TU. It's due to not having the clicking noise when the turning signals are on..

    Love the OCD indicator cancel after every gear change. We all have our OCD turn signal cancellation routine, don't worry :)

    Thanks for the quick reply :) I checked out 3 bikes today. two of them interested me, both done about 25,000 km. One of them had a really worn out rear tire which was a bit dodgy, also one of the front forks had grease on it, don't know if that's a a big deal, but the tires need replacing. The other one had a few scratches but general well maintained, both were like 2010 or 2011 models. I'm a bit apprehensive since this will be my first bike. Loved the test rides though. cheers from sri lanka

    i just got a TU250T (1997) here in Okinawa, Japan
    parts are actually hard to find for this bike, if you know any decent websites that would be sweet if you could share with a fellow TU250 owner :) I'll post a video of me climbing the mountain jungles in Nago, City here in Okinawa :)

    Don't feel bad. I live on the plains and every time I go around a tight corner, I try to cancel my turn signals. The only time my bike ever gets leaned is turning at intersections.

    Good video. It takes more skill to keep it low HP small displacement motorcycle rolling then it does something with 75 HP plus.It’s more fun riding a low HP motorcycle also. Because you can get everything there is a out of it. Someone riding around on a Hayabusa, Can never ring it’s neck on the street never,And you can get in trouble A helluva lot faster on a Hayabusa then you can on the TU 250 at the same time. I am keeping my eye open for a used TU 250. I already know what I’m gonna do to it. Better suspension, real horn‘s, small tall windshield, rack, lockable trunk, magnetic tank bag, I like foam grips, upgrade the brake pads,
    In the movie the wild one. A girl asked the bike gang leader, Marlon Brando where he and his friends ride to when they are on their motorcycles. He said, we just go !
    I’m looking forward to doing just that.

    what gear were you in most of the time? I know it depends on rider weight too. We dont have much in terms of mountains here if Florida but where I live there are a bunch of bridges with steep inclines (as well as ocean breeze crosswinds). Curious to see if this little guy can handle that over say a Bonneville or Thruxton

    1000 miles and the thing is hardly broken in. Around 7000 to 8000 and it should be done. I hit 90 indicated pretty easily with the stock spockets and I am at about 9000 miles.

  • @yellofury
    @yellofury 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks! Theres been a lot of argument on starting on 250s vs say the 800 class like a Bonnie. Even motorcycle mags tend to give the nod to a Bonneville as a first bike but I think I am going the TU route and working my way up. A friend of mine started on a Ducati Monster 686 back in April and hes already thinking about a liter bike> i kind of worry about him but he has a good head on his shoulders

    Great video. :-] Recently got interested in riding, as I've been around bikes my whole life but have never owned one. Need an M license of course, but am window shopping for styles. I like standards, nakeds or adventure series. I'm 36. There's a few I like and this is one.

    It's better than the opposite. I tend to leave them on my DRZ400S, I too am working on it. I got spoiled with my Harley's self-canceling....

    Miles, I strongly recommend the TU as a first bike. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation uses it extensively in their Beginner Riding Courses. Everything aout the bike is very forgiving to new riders. It has enough power to keep up with traffic when ridden casually yet isn't powerful enough to get you arrested for riding it aggressively. If you find a used one you're probably going to lose little, if any, money selling it again in a season or two when you're ready for a bigger bike.

    simply awesome vid... i have a TU in Florida & really miss the mountain element of riding :) beach riding is also nice so I can't really complain... I LOVE MY TU250!

    Sorry for the late reply, Mary: The screen was self-made from aluminum angle bracket, flat stock, nuts & bolts, rubber washers and some Lexan from the local home improvement warehouse. It looks fine from 20'.. but any closer and it's obviously a DIY job. It does keep the bugs off your torso, though. Congrats on the new bike!

  • @CalamityJesus
    @CalamityJesus  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Suspun, not much I can suggest since mine has never broken. These bikes are using some tried and true Suzuki parts and designs, so there isn't much to go wrong that cannot be repaired cheaply. I hope it is going well. Sorry I'm late; Just waking up here on the East Coast of the US.

  • @CalamityJesus

    @yellofury Shifting between 2nd & 3rd gears. Speed limit is 35. I own a '09 Bonneville. It could easily pull that climb in 4th, if not mostly in 5th gear. I've had no problems maintaining 55mph while climbing mountains on the highway with the TU. I wouldn't buy the TU if you plan to do a lot of riding on the freeway, but it is perfectly fast enough to keep up with traffic on most surface roads. A strong headwind coupled with a fast climb could be handled in 4th at 55.

    Nice ride dude, thanks for that. The overview you did also helped. I'm about to go see a second hand suzuki volty 250 in about an hour, was wondering if you still have this bike and any tips you can give on what to look for in it second hand. Cheers brother

      Tommy Fletcher I decided to hold off until we move to our new house later this year. It is so weird that you ask though. I was talking about it again today after months of not even thinking about it.

    • @genericallyaccepted
      @genericallyaccepted 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn O'Brien haha, that is pretty weird. I hope you get one, everybody who shows any interest owes it to themselves to just try it for awhile. My little yamaha is totally cool and perfect for my first bike. It doesn't do too well above 70, but for riding around town it's perfect.

    I believe I was holding the bike back with 2nd or 3rd gears most of the way down to avoid over-use of the brakes. The TU's little engine has lots of RPM range above the power peak so I don't worry too much about over-revving it.

    The name is up for interpretation... but I don't mean to offend anyone with it. I'm in the mountains of North Carolina. Thanks for the feedback, Mike. I see that you're a fan of Forza and Legends Cars.. fun stuff.. me too. :D
