It was the late 80's, so he wasn't a known commodity, it was pre-MVP's, pre-high $ contract, obviously pre-PED's, he was just a young, super talented player, and like Costas said, he was engaging, clearly smart, ultra friendly, always smiling, would sign an autograph for anyone.

Bonds probably would have made the Hall even without the steroids that made him super-human, but it's pretty hard to just forget that happened and forgive him - same with Clemens, though I'm not sure the steroids helped him pitch or just helped him remain healthy enough to pitch.

But he always bet for his team to win, so how would he jinx a game if he's trying to win every game anyway, as a player and as a manager? His nickname was Mr. Hustle, for crying out loud. He's not going to throw a game for money. He's too competitive for that. He should be in, no question.

I think the playoffs are to long,it makes the regular season meaningless. If 162 games aren't enough to decide who's in the September Classic, which has become the November Classic, then cut the regular season 30 games.
