#53 Removing rot & priming window frames - Renovating a 200-yo farm in Italy

  • The window restoration project continues. Paint scraping, rot removal, priming, painting, ... Still no sign of Velluto but we do our best to enjoy the end of summer without him.
Thank you EazyFix for sponsoring this project. If you're curious to learn more about fixing wood rot on your own windows and doors with epoxy-resin, check out www.eazy-fix.nl/ or www.eazy-fix.c...
(EazyFix is not yet available outside of Europe but they are coming to the US soon).
We're Isis & Bertus, a belgian-dutch couple. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 15 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for well over 20 years.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

Thank you EazyFix for sponsoring this project. We've found their wood repair products far superior to anything we've ever used before in terms of ease of use, drying times, and quality.
Epoxy woodrot filler remains flexible, reducing the risk of craks and Eazyfix is the only window repair product for DIY-ers that comes with a 5 year warranty.
If you're curious to learn more about fixing wood rot on your own windows and doors, check out www.eazy-fix.nl/ or www.eazy-fix.co.uk/

Hello from L.A. California . I am a 64 year old woman and my mother who is 88 years old with dementia and many other health issues worked with wood for many years and always used 'Bondo' which is very smelly and hard to work with especially in larger areas the 'Epoxy' that you work with definitely looks like it is a greater fix material 👍 what i really appreciate about both of you is how very organized you are being clean and neat with your work area is 'key' ! Over the years i have observed skilled people but not organized in their work area and to me that is more then half the battle of getting satisfaction from the finished product . The same with cooking some people love to cook but they dont know how to clean as you go and so they refrain because they dont want to clean up the mess they left behind 🤷‍♀️ so all that having been said i must say this i Know that at the end of each day the 'Joy' that you both have in whatever you have accomplished in each day because of your whole approach to it , you have the key 😀 and i love knowing that about you 😘

Hi guys! Great work! As a professional cabinetmaker and furniture conservator who is certified in working with epoxy I would strongly recommend you to use respiratory and physical protection when working with epoxy. It is toxic, suspected to cause cancer and is a very volatile allergenic. It’s harmless when dry, but as soon as it is fluid or sanded it releases toxic dust and vapors. It can cause serious allergic reactions that can make you permanently allergic to all sorts of resin which makes you allergic to nearly all untreated wood! And it the low-vapor part that companies makes advertisements about makes no difference. Treat working with epoxy like working with lead paint and wear the same protection! Keep safe and keep up the good work! ❤

I took a frame restoration class in which the instructor had us use Bondo, which is a brand of epoxy used in fixing damaged cars. I had incredible lung pains from the fumes. This was in a classroom designed to be safe for using oil paints and solvents. I need to stay clear of aromatic carbon-based solvents or I will end up in the hospital. Not fun.

Bertus, it makes me very happy to see you waiting for the table saw to stop spinning before you try to clear the waste and materials from around the blade. Keep up the good work with your new protocols. ❤️🙌 p.s. you might also want to look into a different blade for the saw that produces a finer finish. Maybe a quality multipurpose one that does all kinds of cuts.

please make a wooden push stick for your tablesaw. If your plastic push stick hits the blade it will send small shards of plastic at you. In addition to the riving knife you have, you also need a blade guard with fins to avoid kick back. Also wear some kind of eye protection. I have had two tablesaw accidents. I hope you don't experience any problems . I so enjoy your channel+

Thank you for that great explanation of linseed oil based paint combined with epoxy repairs. It seems "right" to mix the new with the old taking advantage of progress that is healthy with that which provides a feeling of the old--and the smell of linseed oil....ah. I cannot express enough my admiration of the time and detail the two of you (and family and friends) put into your renovation. I am particularly delighted with your love of the nature around you--flowers and animals and the fruits. I've been traveling in France the past couple of weeks and arrived "home" with jet lag so have been "catching up" with your videos awake here in the middle of the night. I thought of you (see it is true) when we could see Italy as we toured in Eastern France!

Excellent workmanship on refurbishing those windows and up-grading them to double pane glass. This will make a tremendous improvement on heating and cooling of your home and also, draft proofing it. Wonderful and informative presentation of techniques used with bonus explanation of strategies and reasoning for your choices in paints and even repair/replacement of areas damaged by rot. Environmentally it makes so much sense to refurbish these windows rather than replace them, though it is extremely time consuming. The use of linseed oil paints seems sound and explained well as per its benefits for prolonging the health of those wood framed windows. The use of epoxy filler to replace rot areas was also well explained and excellent directions were given for successful application. Thanks bunches for the helpful advice and instruction.

When it comes to health & safety you are very good. You wear protection for your ears, yet you possibly think that there isn't much dust when you are doing the cutting, sanding etc. My brother-in-law did a reservation (a lot of cutting wood - fine dust) some 20ish years later he had to leave us because of emphysema, because he thought that he was too strong to use a mask. Please use a mask, what you will have to go through isn't pleasant for those that love you have to watch. Remember it all starts with just a little bit of dust.

I also like the EazyFix epoxy. It looks simple to use and affective. I also agree with your reasons for using linseed oil paints. All the windows in our Piedmont farmhouse are very similar to your windows. I will start with the shutters, then the windows. As a carpenter of many decades my methods will be a little different than what you are doing. Watching you do this is very helpful. Thank you for the videos. Also, Bondo now makes a similar wood filler type epoxy. Originally Bondo was made for car filler.

Hello, if i can give you a tiny little "hint" (you can tell me "fl-kker op" or something like that 😁), your drill bits looks a bit dull, maybe you can sharpen it a bit ?! (it looks to burn wood quickly) and it's quick to make.
And thank you for the insight on why epoxy (even if it's not mandatory in my opinion), winter in your location would be tough and fixing "temporary" is a must have :)
Thank you anyway for your video it's a precious moment

Hi Guys!! Another awesome video! You are making such great progress. Question: what is that turreted structure that we can see from your place up above you? Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🫶

It's a castle + church + village, the main place of our municipality.
